Not bad look :-) It does have a few minor points that I didn't really like though: - It's too wide. Reading the current page on a window that is 800 pixels wide works fine. This layout results in something totally unreadable: http://people.freebsd.org/~keramida/files/narrow.png - The font sizes are too large. I'm looking at this on a 1200x900 desktop, where I usually prefer something like 11px fonts. IMHO, viewing the FreeBSD.org web pages on 800x600 should Just Work(TM). I think, if you do not know much about CSS layouts, that you shoul= d=20 expect some type of distortion at some unrealistically small resolutions=20 (less than 800x600).=20 CSS layouts are not suitable for columns, they are built to be fluid=20 layouts. Fluid !=3D table/column based layout, so resizing the window at sm= all=20 resolutions will get you wierd results. I was able to resize rather small= =20 before I started to see any distortion. They become pretty small on a 1280*768 with only 10". Do not use px for the character size, use pt and you get the same character size independent of the screen resolution. I also use mm for the unit. This is the same story. No matter what resolution the screen has, 10mm are 10 mm. I beg to differ, use fixed size for the middle column instead and let the right side column get whatever is left over. The problem on my screen is that the right side column is way to wide and squeezes the middle column into a thin stripe of text, basically unreadable. Believe it or not, but the most common resolution today is still 800x600. And, even with a 19" screen and 1280x1024, I *never* use my browser full-screen, I keep it at around half the screen size, and I basically refuse to use websites that does not scale well to this size. Since that is where the majority of the information is presented, I consider this a problem. I have made designs in the past that takes this into account and switches between a 2 and a 3 column layout depending on the resulotion and size of the visitors screen. If the screen is considered too narrow, the design simply drops the third column and adds the content in the first column instead. Maybe this could be a good solution for this site as well. It does however require a site with a language that supports atleast simple 'if' statements, and afaik freebsd.org is mostly static (which does not mean the template that presents the contents needs to be static, but thats another discussion). -- R From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 30 11:02:11 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 094C316A41C for ; Mon, 30 May 2005 11:02:11 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D66AC43D54 for ; Mon, 30 May 2005 11:02:10 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j4UB2Ag2030189 for ; Mon, 30 May 2005 11:02:10 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j4UB29QT030183 for freebsd-www@freebsd.org; Mon, 30 May 2005 11:02:09 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 11:02:09 GMT Message-Id: <200505301102.j4UB29QT030183@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 11:02:11 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. Life isn't about winning competition's. The contributors to FreeBSD think it's just a way of life to help eachother instead of winning etc. Other operating systems might have that opinion but i personally think we are just a happy camp of users who are willing to create a great product. So my advise would actually be ; bring your ideas so we can think with all of us (with usefull feedback instead of rants!) how we want to have the new freebsd site. > > -- > > Fafa Hafiz Krantz > Research Designer @ http://www.home.no/barbershop > Enlightened @ http://www.home.no/barbershop/smart/sharon.pdf -- Kind regards, Remko Lodder ** remko@elvandar.org Reporter DSINET ** remko@DSINet.org Founder Tienervaders ** remko@tienervaders.org FreeBSD DocTeam & SecTeam ** remko@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 30 14:26:50 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0082316A41C; Mon, 30 May 2005 14:26:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: from rosebud.otenet.gr (rosebud.otenet.gr [195.170.0.26]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3AEB643D53; Mon, 30 May 2005 14:26:48 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: from orion.daedalusnetworks.priv (aris.bedc.ondsl.gr [62.103.39.226]) by rosebud.otenet.gr (8.13.4/8.13.4/Debian-1) with SMTP id j4UEOsWI029819; Mon, 30 May 2005 17:24:55 +0300 Received: from orion.daedalusnetworks.priv (orion [127.0.0.1]) by orion.daedalusnetworks.priv (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j4UEQkM4084089; Mon, 30 May 2005 17:26:46 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: (from keramida@localhost) by orion.daedalusnetworks.priv (8.13.3/8.13.3/Submit) id j4UEQj7r084088; Mon, 30 May 2005 17:26:45 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 17:26:45 +0300 From: Giorgos Keramidas To: Fafa Hafiz Krantz Message-ID: <20050530142645.GA84049@orion.daedalusnetworks.priv> References: <20050530134159.2E70D4BEAE@ws1-1.us4.outblaze.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20050530134159.2E70D4BEAE@ws1-1.us4.outblaze.com> Cc: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org, freebsd-www@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [30-05-05] Layout update X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 14:26:50 -0000 On 2005-05-30 08:41, Fafa Hafiz Krantz wrote: > From: "John Jawed" > > http://www.johnjawed.com/freebsd-redesign/30-05-2005/ > > You're wasting your time, the webdesign contest hasn't started yet. > > Your design is very clear and mature, however it doesn't give the project > the corporate feel that it requires to sustain among the big players. > > Don't give away your ideas this early :) > Make them better, and use them to win that competition! Sorry, but no. - There is no "website design competition". This means that John (like everyone else) is free to spend his time any way he pleases. His design is actually rather lightweight and cool (apart from minor column size problems and font sizes), so I see no reason to avoid showing it around. - It makes no sense to "keep stuff to yourself", if you're making it in the first place in order to give it to the FreeBSD project. I say "John keep the good work up" and I'm sure he has already contacted all the right people who are not working in Perforce towards the same goal :-) From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 30 15:29:12 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6953116A41C for ; Mon, 30 May 2005 15:29:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: from mail.freebsdmall.com (ns1.freebsdmall.com [69.50.233.146]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3508843D1F for ; Mon, 30 May 2005 15:29:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: by mail.freebsdmall.com (Postfix, from userid 2074) id E31531CE3B; Mon, 30 May 2005 08:29:11 -0700 (PDT) Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 08:29:11 -0700 From: Murray Stokely To: Roger 'Rocky' Vetterberg Message-ID: <20050530152911.GH48115@freebsdmall.com> References: <429ACA6F.9000302@pacific.net.sg> <429ADDB9.2000608@401.cx> <429AE21B.3070303@pacific.net.sg> <429AEC3A.2010308@401.cx> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <429AEC3A.2010308@401.cx> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i X-GPG-Key-ID: 1024D/0E451F7D X-GPG-Key-Fingerprint: E2CA 411D DD44 53FD BB4B 3CB5 B4D7 10A2 0E45 1F7D Cc: freebsd-www@freebsd.org, Erich Dollansky Subject: Re: [30-05-05] Layout update X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 15:29:12 -0000 On Mon, May 30, 2005 at 12:34:34PM +0200, Roger 'Rocky' Vetterberg wrote: > good solution for this site as well. The site is static, but as you note, it is dynamically generated from XML/XSLT stylesheets and such, pulling in newsflash items, release notes, and other data from various XML sources to produce static HTML files in a cronjob. However, that won't help with conditional presentation based on client side variables. My position is that if the benefit is great enough, we can convince the mirror operators that PHP or similar is a worthwhile requirement. I think we can go a long way to improve the site before we need to bring in PHP, but once the design has been improved and a new logo integrated then the next step may very well be an alternating 2 or 3 column design based on the client resolution. - Murray From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 30 23:08:11 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F47416A41C; Mon, 30 May 2005 23:08:11 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fullermd@over-yonder.net) Received: from mortis.over-yonder.net (adsl-144-206-250.jan.bellsouth.net [70.144.206.250]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E544A43D1F; Mon, 30 May 2005 23:08:10 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fullermd@over-yonder.net) Received: by mortis.over-yonder.net (Postfix, from userid 100) id ED8C721020; Mon, 30 May 2005 18:08:08 -0500 (CDT) Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 18:08:08 -0500 From: "Matthew D. Well, this is one of those ongoing eternal flamewars, now isn't it? :p px is better than pt on screen, because pt is interpreted differently on some platforms. I'm on the side of "don't use absolute units" myself. I *KNOW* how big I want my fonts to be, which is why I have my browser set like I do. That doesn't make it right for YOU. Size relative, so your headers are a bit bigger, your asides a bit smaller, etc. Don't try and tell me what size I want my fonts. -- Matthew Fuller (MF4839) | fullermd@over-yonder.net Systems/Network Administrator | http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/ On the Internet, nobody can hear you scream. I think it's a good idea. I actually did that in the .css when I played around with the web site some time ago. You might also want to set it for links in titles (since that is used at least some places), e.g. I had: h2 A:visited, h2 A:link { color: #990000; } --=20 Simon L.
