I know there has been much discussion on this list in the past few months regarding a redesign of freebsd.org. I'd like to propose the following design as the basis for a redesigned website: http://www.emilyboyd.com/design/freebsd/homepage_proposal.png http://www.emilyboyd.com/design/freebsd/secondpage_proposal.png I've learnt a lot from reviewing the earlier redesigns proposed by folks like Devon O'Dell, Chris Zumbrunn, and others. The input on this list from people such as Ceri Davies and Simon Nielsen has also been invaluable. If my design proposal is accepted, I would be able to code up the design as SGML/XSLT templates so that the existing website can be rapidly converted to the new style and launched in time for 6.0-RELEASE. Various members of core@ and marketing@ have reviewed my design, and have offered a lot of encouragement. I would love to hear additional feedback from those on this list. Thanks for your time. She will start coding it in HTML once there is agreement on the design. You could take a look at the postgresql.org site and see if you are happy with her coding for multiple resolutions and text mode, as she designed that site as well. It's a good point though that all of these sorts of things will need to be extensible to new translations and new sections added to the site. We listed this as a requirement on the wiki, and we'll make sure to hold Emily to it when she starts the HTML coding stage. - Murray From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 22 15:42:02 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 89B2316A425 for ; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 15:42:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from xlr8me@gmail.com) Received: from wproxy.gmail.com (wproxy.gmail.com [64.233.184.199]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DED8E43D46 for ; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 15:42:01 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from xlr8me@gmail.com) Received: by wproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id 55so403610wri for ; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 08:42:01 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:reply-to:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=gSbdM1EnhjN63rutWShP3Q+Se56rkBHChDGDoTgIElLO3yks3sQZmxF/d9MAAwtCgKvVvpQbA6lAr15D95sC6X/RTBKJvSUXwCA/vecDoqYt9VexDvC5GBnpiFVk1aKYyBlQIfv2pLCOXCMquZOm12md4wscX/UY5llvDFLi4oI= Received: by 10.54.53.74 with SMTP id b74mr1265681wra; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 08:41:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.54.151.19 with HTTP; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 08:41:40 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <2472a6830507220841218ac62d@mail.gmail.com> Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 09:41:40 -0600 From: Darren L To: soc-emily@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <42E10C43.9050309@FreeBSD.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline References: <42E10467.3050109@freebsd.org> <20050722145945.GA27461@beatrix.daedalusnetworks.priv> <42E10C43.9050309@FreeBSD.org> Cc: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD design proposal X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Darren L List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 15:42:02 -0000 That looks fantastic and has a nice fresh feel to it. The implementation of the secondary pages might be tricky. If I remember correctly, many pages currently only have a header that you can include, but no footer. You may need to compromise the layout in this regard initially and then transition to the ideal version later, after the markup of all the pages has been updated. > If my design proposal is accepted, I would be able to code up the > design > as SGML/XSLT templates so that the existing website can be rapidly > converted to the new style and launched in time for 6.0-RELEASE. You should be able to use the code in Devon's perforce workspace for this. http://perforce.freebsd.org/depotTreeBrowser.cgi?FSPC=//depot/user/ dodell/new%5fwww/en I think you can pretty much get from there to your proposal with CSS adjustments. As=20 mentioned previously, if FreeBSD decides to implement a logo in addition to the mascot, will there need to be a drastic change in the format? If FreeBSD.org will be essentialy the same as PostgreSQL.org, then I have a number of concerns: PostgreSQL.org is 'graphics heavy'. By this I mean that there are a number of places where HTML text could be used in place of graphics. There are a number of reasons for this, such as: automatic sizing in various sized browser windows, and better search engine placement. More discussion here: Also, by reducing the graphics content pages will load quicker. =20 Many potential users of FreeBSD live in countries where access is metered and relatively costly. It would be nice to have a link to a 'site map' on each page. That way, one doesn't have shuffle through page after page looking for something. The CSS appears to be valid. However, I question why it is split between so many files. It might be easier to maintain in a single file. There are a number of infractions of good Web design at the PostgreSQL.org site. I checked http://www.postgresql.org/ and it has a fixed 800px layout. I would prefer a layout which takes advantages off the whole screen. These two links were considered important enough that they needed to be directly accessible from every page (rather than buried in one of the site's sections), but at the same time did not need to be particularly prominent. They are the kind of links that are likely to be "one-off" clicks, and not visited on a regular basis, so they are not as important as the rest of the main navigation items. I haven't been following the thread, so I don't really know what your intentions are. Where I got hung up last time is that the design Chris made with the three columns is really hard to implement with divs and CSS, when you want to be able to let the divs grow / shrink when the window is resized.
