I was wondering if it could be posted on the Events page. Thanks! Brad New York City BSD Conference (NYCBSDCon), a one day technical conference hosted by the New York City *BSD User Group, will be held on Saturday, September 17th at Columbia University. The all day conference will include a variety of speakers representing the BSD projects and the open source community. NYCBSDCon is organized by NYC*BUG, a technical user group that formed in December 2003. Besides their regular monthly meetings at the Soho Apple Store, NYC*BUG has done fundraising for the BSD projects and contributed a number of useful online applications such as BSDTracker and dmesgd. Additional sponsors include USENIX, New York Internet and SRA America. Unlike some of my other documentation work, since it involved (to some degree) speaking for the Project as a whole, I submitted it and had it reviewed by core@, re@, and secteam@ directly rather than through the normal doc channels. I hope this doesn't ruffle too many feathers; I think the work is worth it to try to head off as many of these threads as possible ... But a question that remains is, should this article have a link from the front page? I know that this would affect the work being done to redesign that and I do not wish to work at cross-purposes with that. My opinion (obviously) is that it should, as it seems to be one of these "start here" kinds of things. But having said that I'll step back and let other discussion occur. mcl From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 17 09:54:09 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0FB7016A422 for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 09:54:09 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from setantae@submonkey.net) Received: from shrike.submonkey.net (cpc4-cdif2-3-1-cust199.cdif.cable.ntl.com [82.31.76.199]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0CA543E2C for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 09:26:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from setantae@submonkey.net) Received: from setantae by shrike.submonkey.net with local (Exim 4.52 (FreeBSD)) id 1E5KBi-000Ov6-SO; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 10:26:22 +0100 Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 10:26:22 +0100 From: Ceri Davies To: Mark Linimon Message-ID: <20050817092622.GP55885@submonkey.net> Mail-Followup-To: Ceri Davies , Mark Linimon , freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org References: <20050817073518.GA8518@soaustin.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="M9YpAf2t6OxtMGzg" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20050817073518.GA8518@soaustin.net> X-PGP: finger ceri@FreeBSD.org User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i Sender: Ceri Davies Cc: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: [headsup] new article: How To Choose The Version Of FreeBSD That Is Right For You X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 09:54:09 -0000 --M9YpAf2t6OxtMGzg Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Wed, Aug 17, 2005 at 02:35:18AM -0500, Mark Linimon wrote: > As a result of the recent thread on Quality of FreeBSD, which seemed > to strongly imply that some of our users don't understand how our > development proceeds, I have written and committed the above article > to try to address that information gap. > But a question that remains is, should this article have a link from > the front page? Yes. Most new articles should be added to the newsflash section, especially ones as important as this. It should also be linked from some of the second level pages, which I'm in the process of doing now. There may be a place for it on the new front page, but the current one is extremely crowded and hopefully won't be around much longer anyway. - Murray From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 17 14:12:47 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFC8716A41F for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 14:12:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: from mail.freebsdmall.com (ns1.freebsdmall.com [69.50.233.146]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B62E743D46 for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 14:12:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: by mail.freebsdmall.com (Postfix, from userid 2074) id 9DF171CE53; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 07:12:47 -0700 (PDT) Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 07:12:47 -0700 From: Murray Stokely To: Giorgos Keramidas Message-ID: <20050817141247.GC90342@freebsdmall.com> References: <20050817073518.GA8518@soaustin.net> <20050817115716.GC1084@flame.pc> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20050817115716.GC1084@flame.pc> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i X-GPG-Key-ID: 1024D/0E451F7D X-GPG-Key-Fingerprint: E2CA 411D DD44 53FD BB4B 3CB5 B4D7 10A2 0E45 1F7D Cc: Mark Linimon , freebsd-www@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [headsup] new article: How To Choose The Version Of FreeBSD That Is Right For You X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 14:12:48 -0000 On Wed, Aug 17, 2005 at 02:57:16PM +0300, Giorgos Keramidas wrote: > +1 > > This question belongs to the general category of things that are bound > to be asked by any newcomer. > > - Where do I get it? > - What version is ok for me? > - How do I install it? However, to me, the document doesn't seem to be written for a newcomer. After reading the article, it still doesn't answer the question, "So does that mean I should install 5.4 or 4.11 if I want a really conservative system and I don't need any bells and whistles". Most large sites I know of are still running 4.X, including the FreeBSD cluster. The document talks about release engineering, branches, and lots of other topics that are interesting to many people, but not to a newcomer just trying to figure out which version she should install for her needs. It's a nice addition to the doc set, and to the release engineering docs. I thought it would be appropriate as a link on the releases.html page, beneath the links to 4.11 and 5.4, but it won't really help a user choose between those two so I don't think it works well there. In order to work there, I think there needs to be a section of the document that describes the broad features of 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x. Maybe a feature comparison matrix with summary recommendations. - Murray From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 17 14:49:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 259EC16A41F for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 14:49:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from linimon@lonesome.com) Received: from mail.soaustin.net (mail.soaustin.net [207.200.4.66]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D6BD643D45 for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 14:49:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from linimon@lonesome.com) Received: by mail.soaustin.net (Postfix, from userid 502) id 5ECB42B1F; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 09:49:21 -0500 (CDT) Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 09:49:21 -0500 To: Murray Stokely Message-ID: <20050817144921.GE5228@soaustin.net> References: <20050817073518.GA8518@soaustin.net> <20050817115716.GC1084@flame.pc> <20050817141247.GC90342@freebsdmall.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20050817141247.GC90342@freebsdmall.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i From: linimon@lonesome.com (Mark Linimon) Cc: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [headsup] new article: How To Choose The Version Of FreeBSD That Is Right For You X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 14:49:22 -0000 On Wed, Aug 17, 2005 at 07:12:47AM -0700, Murray Stokely wrote: > However, to me, the document doesn't seem to be written for a > newcomer. I was originally going to try to further summarize the long thread that inspired the article in the first place, in particular to try to address the "should I install 5.4 or wait for 6.0" decision. It was partly why I held off committing for a while to try to decide what way to go with this (should the feature set be a separate article that is updated more often? should more discussion about why we aren't going to do things like we used to take place here, or in another article, or ... ?) Unfortunately the window I have to work on this had already started to close last week and so I had the choice to go with what I had before 6.0 or not get it in. My own preference would be for one article that had most of what is in this one, and which wouldn't change, and another article/web page/ "something" that had an updated feature matrix. But I'm just out of cycles to implement it myself for the next N weeks. I won't be offended if what's here gets reworked for that purpose. The intent was to try to head off a repeat of the original email thread, and whatever gets us closer to that goal is fine with me. mcl From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 17 19:30:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B2E4E16A41F for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:30:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B394643D48 for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:30:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j7HJULsa069874 for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:30:21 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j7HJULHl069869; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:30:21 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:30:21 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200508171930.j7HJULHl069869@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Alex Tulkoff Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1CF0316A41F for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:23:09 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E94F43D5E for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:23:08 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j7HJN7aW056791 for ; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:23:07 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j7HJN74Y056790; Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:23:07 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200508171923.j7HJN74Y056790@www.freebsd.org> Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:23:07 GMT From: Alex Tulkoff To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: www/85051: Please add our company to the list of Hardware vendors supporting FreeBSD X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:30:22 -0000 >Number: 85051 >Category: www >Synopsis: Please add our company to the list of Hardware vendors supporting FreeBSD >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-www >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Wed Aug 17 19:30:21 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Alex Tulkoff >Release: >Organization: ABMX Servers >Environment: >Description:

I hope I send this to the right address, also because it's a mailinglist. I couldn't find any emailaddress to HR anyway... I'm a last year student at Multimedia Engineering (Graphical Communication & Media) in Belgium. After that study, you become a ... webmaster ;) My courses (so also my skills) are: - HTML / xHTML / CSS - Multimedia Technology (theoretics) - JavaScript - Photoshop / Illustrator - Flash / inDesign The list is ordened from my best skills first to my less good skills last. I want to learn new thinks if neccesary... Outside my studies, I work for a company in Belgium as web and system administrator. I'm creating their website, as you can see here: http://www.ismsbelgium.be/index2.php If needed, I can send you my schoolproject of last year also. As an open source project, we're always interested in submitted improvements to our website. The code for our website is maintained as SGML and XML files that are translated to HTML with SGML normalizers and XSLT stylesheets. All of the code is available in CVS and people usually begin to get involved by submitting new enhancements to the website as patches. Be aware than Emily Boyd is in the middle of a substantial redesign of the website. You can review the mailing list archives for this list from docs.freebsd.org for more information about that. You can also learn about CVS and how to download a local copy of the website to make modifications from www.freebsd.org. - Murray
