Input Boxes too tiny. This is 80 column text: 01234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789 Please make the input fields at least so big, that you can easily copy paste console messages or config files, that mostly need up to 80 colums space. 2. The input boxes center the text. This is awefull after copy/pasting. Please make them left formatted. For a technical error report, which sometimes contains parts of config files the "center text" formatting in the boxes is painfull. 3. Make the boxes not even wider (80 columns) but also bigger, so that one can better read and trim/correct text you either pasted or typed in. 6 lines is too few. 4. A real problem is, when you want to paste text, like `uname -a` output from a shell window. The problem is, if you mark the text with the mouse in shell window, then coming back into the send-pr forms "Environment" window for paste, somethings screws up the copy buffers content. You see after clicking into the send-pr window, that suddenly the text field "Full Description" gets highlighted and if you past something with middle mouse button, then you don't get your "uname -a" output from shell window, but the text "Full Description". This is with newest KDE and using Konqueror. 5. Something bad seems to happen when trying to copy/paste an URL from another Konqueror's window "Location: field". It makes the system go busy for a while. I think this is related to the fact, that not only the "Full Description" string is in the X-Window paste buffer. But also all what you typed in into the field, like this text. It really sucks ;-) >How-To-Repeat: Open 2 Konqueror windows. One URL is: http://www.freebsd.org/docs/man.html The other this send-pr form: http://www.freebsd.org/send-pr.html Go into Konquerors location field and mark the URL "http://www.freebsd.org/docs/man.html" so that its highlighted and in XWindows paste buffer. Then click into the send-pr form, where you want to paste the text. This time I see, "How to repeat the problem" is highlighted. If I paste now, then surprise surprise: this is what I get: %------------------------------------ How to repeat the problem: %------------------------------------ Since this text automatically is highlighted as soon as I click into this window. How to repeat the problem: Open 2 Konqueror windows. And now the really weired thing is: This copy/paste bug behaves different. A) When I paste something into the "Full Description" field, then the whole input gets pasted again instead of what I intended to paste b) in the "How to repeat the problem" window its only the Box Title "How to repeat..." that gets pasted. Hope you get that one fixed ;-) >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Oct 23 16:03:08 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 86F1216A41F; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 16:03:08 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ceri@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B7DCA43D53; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 16:03:07 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ceri@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (ceri@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j9NG378h073064; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 16:03:07 GMT (envelope-from ceri@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from ceri@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j9NG36IH073060; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 16:03:06 GMT (envelope-from ceri) Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2005 16:03:06 GMT From: Ceri Davies Message-Id: <200510231603.j9NG36IH073060@freefall.freebsd.org> To: andreas@klemm.apsfilter.org, ceri@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: www/87865: new send-pr webform, different problems (copy/paste, formatting, size of boxes X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2005 16:03:08 -0000 Synopsis: new send-pr webform, different problems (copy/paste, formatting, size of boxes State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: ceri State-Changed-When: Sun Oct 23 16:02:22 GMT 2005 State-Changed-Why: I fixed items 1, 2 and 3. I've tested all of the scripts, including the ones that I was having trouble testing. I discovered that hub's web area wasn't getting updated because of shuffling around of web services, which Wolfram fixed. So, I'm ready to commit the first phase. Anyone want to do any further testing before I do so? The diffs are at http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/newcgi.diff . >Would I be able to talk you into looking at dosendpr.cgi so >that we can get rid of html.pl? I had started out thinking that I could make stub functions for the html.pl functionality in cgi-style, but haven't looked into it deeply. New-look-ifying the html.pl users is on my list, but making the new look available in the first place was my primary goal and I might not have cycles to continue the project after this part is done. >(this is also a blocker on any possible GNATS4 upgrade). Hmm, it isn't actually, now that I remember the details properly. I confused really hating html.pl with really hating query-pr-summary.cgi. Sorry about that. The people of freebsddiary.org need to update their link :-) Please poke them instead, but thanks for paying attention to this detail! keep on doing that, FreeBSD and it's documentation and such only can get better by it :) Thanks, Cheers, Remko -- Kind regards, Remko Lodder ** remko@elvandar.org FreeBSD ** remko@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Oct 27 16:10:24 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9E57F16A41F for ; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:10:24 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFE2C43D49 for ; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:10:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j9RGANTC041564 for ; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:10:23 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j9RGANsc041563; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:10:23 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:10:23 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200510271610.j9RGANsc041563@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Jonathan Arnold Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DEB9B16A41F for ; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:09:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9834C43D45 for ; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:09:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j9RG9cW0094853 for ; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:09:38 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j9RG9csY094852; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:09:38 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200510271609.j9RG9csY094852@www.freebsd.org> Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:09:38 GMT From: Jonathan Arnold To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: www/88084: fortune not found in online man pages X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 16:10:24 -0000 >Number: 88084 >Category: www >Synopsis: fortune not found in online man pages >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-www >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Thu Oct 27 16:10:23 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Jonathan Arnold >Release: N/A >Organization: >Environment: N/A >Description: If you search the online man pages here: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi for 'fortune', it says: Sorry, no data found for `fortune'. Here at Lone Star Software we just put the finishing touches on a native FreeBSD version of our Rescue-Ranger software, which lets Admin's build a system crash CD, should they need to recover a box in a hurry. Rescue-Ranger works hand-in-hand with the Lone-Tar software, which lets users create backups of the system to a variety of media, such as Tape / DVD / Rev Drive, etc. This software has been very popular on Linux and other Unix variants, and now that it is available on FreeBSD, we have seen more interest in that platform as well. The full press release is available here: http://www.cactus.com/?p=tsef11 -- Best Regards, Technical Support .--. ___________________________ .-. | | _____________________________________ Lone Star Software Corp. | | | | .-. What is the status of this? The site still appears to be fixed width. There have been a number of improvements since the initial release of the new site and it is now becoming more useful. This is a list of issues I still see with the new web site: - Clickable titles: e.g. the section titles on the main page should be clickable and take you to the same location as the "more..." link below the titles. This applies to "Latest news", "Upcoming events", "In the media", "Security advisories" and "Errata notices" on the main page. - Site index: There should be a site index link on each page which takes you to a good index of the main pages. I thought I found such a page recently, but can't find it today. - Visited links: Visited links use the same color as unvisited links. When navigating a web site like www.freebsd.org where lots of links take you to the same place this is not good. - Fixed pixel width design: Discussed in freebsd-www@freebsd.org. - Font size problems: "font-size: 69%" needs to be removed from http://www.freebsd.org/layout/css/fixed.css. - Colors: I often find the use of color on a website poorly thought out. In this area I don't have too many specific problems with the new FreeBSD site. Nothing has bad contrast I agree with with a lot of what Eric Ryan Harrison wrote in <20051008034820.GA30150@theimpossible.net>. He covered these and a number of other usability issues. In particular he writes: > Just s/font-style:\n//g and be done with the whole she-bang. Your > website will be better for it. I think that should be "s/font-.*;//". I may even try that with a privoxy filter. See=20 http://obsecurity.dyndns.org/main.png First, the text only takes up about 1/3 of the width of the display (2048x1536 pixels). This makes for readability problems on some pages that are attempting to display a lot of information (e.g. cvsweb). Secondly, the header overflows, perhaps because I have to use 24-point fonts in order for firefox to display them as large as 12-point should be (i.e. it's probably not using the correct dpi settings, although KDE applications do).
