Unfortunately, whenever the X-server tries to start up, it dies complaining about the absence of /dev/vga ... "device vga" is certainly in the kernel and vga0 is listed in dmesg.boot. Please, advice. Thanks! Last time I checked, the '/dev/vga' error was actually a bug in the X server, which means to print a different error: that '/dev/mem' is missing. Likely, your kernel is compiled without "device mem", which is a standard option in GENERIC.
