I will run free bsd 6.2 when it comes out. What I want to hear is what new hardware other people are running that does not require too much work in getting setup, i.e. plug n play =3D=3D good... I like brand name stuff, cause mostly it breaks down less and is easier to get some help for and usually someone else has worked out the drivers etc for it. What would you run given the choice and about 2,000 AUD to put something together? I have no preference on architecture. Motherboard ::=20 CPU ::=20 RAM ::=20 Garphics Card ::=20 Wireless Card ::=20 Other Devices ::=20 Thanks Simon Maginnity P.s. should it be listed somewhere a couple of general hardware options like 2 or 3 choices for desktops, recommeded hardware for major webserver's, recommeded hardware for major data centre's, and just some different options for machines. ________________________________________________________________________ _____ IMPORTANT: This email remains the property of the Australian Defence Organisation and is subject to the jurisdiction of section 70 of the Crimes Act 1914. Apart from a very sensible CLI, it should meet most of your requirements. Error handling comes from using cdparanoia (can be replaced with others as well), abcde has a highly configurable encoding plugins. Give it a shot, build a sensible config-file of your taste, and a CLI is not necessary anyways. A tip in the end, though; consider ripping to something lossless first (like FLAC), and then transcode to mp3. You might find ripping your cd's once again when mp3 is overrun by the next best codec to be quite tiresome. DragonflyBSDs stated objectives are pretty much what the OP was talking about. If ever get into multi/parallel computing I'll have a good reason to try it. The OP is welcome to try it too. If he didn't know about Dragonfly, let's tell him. http://www.dragonflybsd.org/index.shtml They don't claim to be ready for prime time just yet. It looks like there getting there. Obviously you won't get much answers for such a broad question because people have different problems even with slight variations of hardware (e.g. hardware that appears to have a minor revision number different might behave totally different in practice). Here are some broad pointers (might work for you, might not): - Stay away from motherboards/chipsets that are less than a year to 6 months old. In particular, stay away from nVidia motherboards because nVidia doesn't give out specs needed to make drivers and drivers are reverse engineered, with varying quality. - But, nVidia has reasonably good closed source binary drivers for their graphics cards available for FreeBSD (only for i386 architecture) - Any RAM and CPU will work - Stay away from "high definition audio" sound cards (including those embedded on motherboards) unless you want to run -CURRENT - don't know much about the quality of wireless cards; Intel Centrino chipsets seem to be ok.
