You can just install linux_dist-gentoo-stage3, it is the most complete distribution. You can use it chrooted with 'chroot /usr/local/gentoo-stage3 /bin/bash'. It is a complete Gentoo linux running on the FreeBSD kernel, so you will get everything that is included in the Gentoo stage3 distribution. Third party softwares can be installed via the portage system. It is "Gentoo's ports collection" but has nothing to do with our ports collection. Please refer to the Gentoo Linux Handbook to find out how you can use the portage system: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml -- Cheers, Gabor From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 30 21:34:00 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: emulation@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C74416A4DE for ; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 21:34:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) Received: from scotth.emsphone.com (scotth.emsphone.com [199.67.51.179]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E074343D53 for ; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 21:33:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) Received: from scotth.emsphone.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by scotth.emsphone.com (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k7ULXbFP089869; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 16:33:37 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) Received: (from shildret@localhost) by scotth.emsphone.com (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k7ULXb3R089868; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 16:33:37 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) X-Authentication-Warning: scotth.emsphone.com: shildret set sender to shildreth@allantgroup.com using -f From: "Scott T. Unless WITH_LINUXBASE is set, it installs into /usr/local/gentoo-stage1. To run progs or compile, you have to do a 'chroot /usr/local/gentoo-stage1'. Which is not optimal if I want to run something compiled there as in /usr/compat/linux. I am going to try to make it the linux_base and see how things run. Just curious, if linux_base-fc4 is going to be the default, why not make a linux-devtools port that coincides with the linux_base port? > > WBR -- Scott T. WITH_LINUXBASE is okay, if you don't want to chroot, but that is discouraged, since _none_ of the related ports are guaranteed to work properly with that. Only the default linux_base port is supported officially by our ports collection, which is already linux_base-fc4 at the moment, that's why I did not mention this way in my previous answer. -- Cheers, Gabor From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 30 21:41:55 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: emulation@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 953BC16A4DE; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 21:41:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) Received: from scotth.emsphone.com (scotth.emsphone.com [199.67.51.179]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2016543D5C; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 21:41:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) Received: from scotth.emsphone.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by scotth.emsphone.com (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k7ULfn0X089911; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 16:41:49 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) Received: (from shildret@localhost) by scotth.emsphone.com (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k7ULfn9p089910; Wed, 30 Aug 2006 16:41:49 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from shildreth@allantgroup.com) X-Authentication-Warning: scotth.emsphone.com: shildret set sender to shildreth@allantgroup.com using -f From: "Scott T. I need to the linux version to compile DBD::Oracle, which uses Oracle's oci. I make a link in /usr/local/bin, perll, which points to the linux compiled perl in compat. If I need to run code that uses DBD::Oracle I use the perll to run it. Is there anything I can do about it? The linux fontconfig and freetype libraries we use are older than =20 those we use in FreeBSD native. So any differences between our native =20 libs and the linux libs are set in stone... more or less. I This is only a problem if you compile something which needs some libs =20 which aren't available in linux_base. You could make a local =20 port/package out of them and install them to linux_base (programs =20 should install at least a wrapper in the FreeBSD native tree). We have some ports which conflict with linux devtools. You also want =20 to chroot anyway when developing linux stuff on FreeBSD, else you may =20 get some nasty problems. Picking up FreeBSD native stuff is one of =20 them. Another problem is that the current linux base structure is =20 intended to use parts of FreeBSD where possible (it relies on the fall =20 through to FreeBSD native directories), which isn't given when doing a =20 chroot into it. So I'm grateful we got the linux_dist ports for cross-development =20 stuff, they solve some nasty issues in a nice way. Doing a linux_devtools update is a waste of time in my eyes, but you =20 are free to do it. In case someone does it, please switch maintainer =20 from emulation@ to something else. If you on anything else: your libmap.conf is out of date, please =20 compare with the example provided by linuxpluginwrapper =20 (/usr/local/share/example/???). Background: Linuxpluginwrapper does not need any linux_base stuff. It =20 comes with some shims which wrap FreeBSD native lib calls to Linux =20 ones. The linux code is referencing libpthread.so.0 (and other libs) =20 and libmap.conf is mapping the libs to the glue code. The linux =20 plugins are calling the wrappers in the glue code and the glue code is =20 calling FreeBSD native code. Bye, Alexander. --=20 There are three rules for writing a novel.
