Cairo 1.2.0 gives some improvement in performance but I find the output quality still considerably worse than with splash when it comes to rendering documents containing Type 3 fonts. (See screenshots at www.ut.ee/~veiko_p/splash_vs_cairo/) With large Type 3 documents like http://beige.ucs.indiana.edu/M743/M743.pdf evince crashed after some time, and quality was bad too. I suppose these are the reasons why eg Ubuntu linux have built evince with the splash backend. best, Veiko -- On 7/8/06, Joe Marcus Clarke wrote: > On Sat, 2006-07-08 at 21:47 +0200, Veiko Palge wrote: > > Hello, > > > > I recompiled poppler by disabling the cairo backend (added > > --disable-cairo-output to CONFIGURE_ARGS in poppler Makefile) so that > > evince uses the splash backend by default and the problem disappeared! > > Evince now renders all kinds of documents it could not render before, > > like eg > > > > http://beige.ucs.indiana.edu/M743/M743.pdf > > > > The versions are: poppler 0.5.3, evince 0.5.3_1. > > > > I wonder if the poppler port could be changed so the user can choose > > between splash and cairo while compiling the port? I > didn't have such problems on 2.12. I see the same problems. If I click on a gweather applet and select "Preferences", the CPU goes to 100% for 16 seconds before the window appears on my 1 GHz PIII system. On my P-M system at 2 GHz, it "only" takes five seconds of saturated CPU. With Firefox, downloading a file can be so painful that I usually copy the link into a fetch command. It simply seems to totally bog down when I download multiple files. I have already completely re-build Gnome 2.14 (and all ports). While the delays are livable for me, I can't help thinking that something is wrong. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. IIRC, the solution was to "update your icon cache". Please don't quote me on this, but it may at least get you started in the right direction. The state of libgda3 is unknown. Development is sporadic, and it is still not stable. gnumeric and gnome2-office can be built without libgda3/libgnomedb support. While changing the py-gnome-extras dependency to libgda3 would not affect the build per se, the plist will be wrong. Now my Gnome works faster. These symptoms are cured =). Applications are faster too. So... i've searched google for "update your icon cache Gnome" and found this: http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/gtk/gtk-update-icon-cache.html so, then i did: #find /usr -name "index.theme" -print > lst then i wrote a little python script which executed gtk-update-icon-cache in every folder that has index.theme: #!/usr/local/bin/python import os f=open("lst","r"); for s in f.readlines(): print s[:-13] os.system("gtk-update-icon-cache -f "+s[:-13]) f.close() Of course, there is an easier way without python script, but i don't feel very comfortable with regexps, sed and so on. I'm just FreeBSD home user with a couple of little FreeBSD servers =). Thank you for your help! P.S.:I've sent a copy of this to maillist. I installed this new workstation last saturday, installed my ports, etc. Now I can't get my desktop to show on Gnome 2.14, after upgrading from 2.12, where it did show. I tried all the soluitions given on the list, rebuilding the cache, rebuilding all the relevant ports, rebuilding individually, etc. to no avail. I simply can't get the desktop to show. Everything else seems to be working OK, even the themes. If I go to desktop preferences, all of a sudden a wallpaper will show up, but no icons. I've been at it for about a week and I really am at my wit's end. Anyone have an idea? So far, I have added atapicam to the kernel, added the appropriate sound driver, changed cd permissions so that it could be mounted by users. Gnome-CD and Soundjuicer work fine (and sound pretty good, all things considered). So far, I have been unable to get the others to work. Jamboree crashes, totem loads but cannot find any material to play, rhythmbox can't initialize the scheduler (and there is no gst-register to run, as it suggests), and goobox suggests that I need the cdparanoia gstreamer plugin (which is installed according to gst-inspect). gtreamer-properties shows that the audio and video output and input both pass tests. To me it seems like one or more setup file is not right, and these things get so interwoven that I don't know what to do next. Incidently, this version of Gnome has been successively upgraded from 2.10 and otherwise works well. Suggestions would be most appreciated. I'll provide more information if you point me to what you are looking for. Frank
