I hope this post ends up in the same thread, if not, this is the problem i'm talking about. http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-hardware/2006-April/003447.html A dell tech has now updated the motherboard bios, replaced both the disk and the SCSI controller card. The problem still exists and i'm still installing FreeBSD 6.0-REALSE from the same cd as the other machine mentioned in the previous post. The Dell tech has now installed Windows just to show me that the windows driver works and sure enough it does work without any errors logged. I've been moving tons of data without it locking up or reporting any errors yet. My next step is to try NetBSD and after that Linux because Dell uses Linux on their boot cd. I thought i should report this though because it could be a problem with the FreeBSD driver, even if it is a problem in the card that the Windows driver is able to bypass i think i should bring attention to it on the hardware list so that the proper maintainer may have a look at the problem. -- Med vänliga hälsningar Stefan Midjich aka nocturnal [Swehack] http://swehack.se From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 11 00:17:34 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EACE116A404 for ; Tue, 11 Apr 2006 00:17:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from test@krea.pl) Received: from krea.pl (pi20.poznan.sdi.tpnet.pl [213.76.217.20]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F194C43D68 for ; Tue, 11 Apr 2006 00:17:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from test@krea.pl) Received: by krea.pl (Postfix, from userid 1003) id 9FB02A9A1; Tue, 11 Apr 2006 01:13:08 +0200 (CEST) To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org From: postcard.com Message-Id: <20060410231308.9FB02A9A1@krea.pl> Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2006 01:13:08 +0200 (CEST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: You have received a postcard ! The stt3401a tape drive that was in server was working fine. The tape drive posts in the BIOS but when freebsd boots up, it will not detect the drive. Documentation for the drive does state it cannot be on the same controller as a hard drive, which I verified. So, on its own controller (secondary) as master, the OS still will not detect the drive when system boots. I have tried all possibilities of appropiate jumper settings to no avail. The best I can get out of the drive is when the OS loads I get a "ata1-slave: FAILURE - ATAPI_IDENTIFY timed out". I get the message three times the os loads and no drive. I know freebsd is doing /dev differently than in the past. It loads /dev dynamically on boot, so it is not loaded with all the device files, just the ones it detects. Is there a way to force the dev file to load. ANY suggestions would be appreciated.
