Anything to get a hint at what's going on. Does it play audio CDs? Chances are, you have a drive with broken firmware. As a last resort, I'd try flashing it with compatible firmware. One thing that I have noticed, however, is that when testing performance under Bonnie++ the write times (both characters and blocks) are slow (~6.5MB/sec). I have not tried making multiple RAID volumes, which I hear is an issue with this controller + fBSD. (ultra means it supports SATA's NCQ queueing) I'm running FreeBSD 6.0 on it. > Do ATA & SATA ports, ethernet and sound work? The nforce Ethernet works, but I've only used it for a few minutes, and didn't stress it at all. I haven't tried sound with FreeBSD. PATA and SATA work. It can read from 4 SATA disks at once as fast as the data comes off the platters (65-70MB/s at the fast end of the platters). I'm running soft updates and have the disks' write cache in write-through mode to avoid scrambled filesystems. In write-through mode I get about 6-7 MB/s. If anyone knows how to turn on SATA NCQ, please let me know. But there is a problem. Writing to one drive slows down writes to an unrelated drive. (I'm not using any form of RAID.) See the "processes not getting fair share of available disk I/O" thread in -questions for more info on this problem. At this point I don't know if this problem has anything to do with the nforce chip or not. > What about an ATI graphics card? My board has an onboard ATI chip. Xorg seems happy with it, but ATI doesn't support sync-on-green, so it is useless with my monitor. The nforce USB works, although I haven't stressed it. The only problem I ever ran into was with was the ethernet chipset. It was originally a bit funky in regards to deciding to go unresonsive for awhile. Not had any problems in the > Do ATA & SATA ports, ethernet and sound work? What about an ATI > graphics card? The SATA and ATA work nicely on them. Same for the sound and ethernet. If you want good graphics performance you will want to go with a nVidia card. I have been really pleased with the nVidia chipsets under FreeBSD. For building a server system I would like to use the TYAN Tomcat n3400B motherboard (TYAN S2925G2NR). As far as I know, this motherboard utilises the nVidia nForce 3400 chipset which is similar, or even identical to the new nForce5XX chipsets introduced shortly. The main question is: will FreeBSD 6.2/amd64 work with this board? I need especially both NICs and the SATA-II RAID-0/Mirroring facilities. Thank you very much for your comments. The drive passes all of the low level tests when I use the Maxtor PowerMax testing software. When I put this drive under any heavy load, I get a "kernel: adxx: detached" error, and then I can't reattach the drive using atacontrol. My motherboard has a "nVidia nForce3 Pro SATA150 controller", and when I researched the problem, I've notice that people have firmware issues with this combination. So, I bought a "SiI 3512 SATA150 controller" to eliminate this issue, but I'm still seeing the same error. Does SATA just not yet work under FreeBSD? Anything that I can do to try to focus on the real problem? Thanks, -SR -- Stephen J. For the archives: I bought one of these systems, a fairly inexpensive version with a SATA disk controller rather than the more expensive SAS controller. It works fine with the i386 version of -current. (I haven't tried an amd64 kernel.) The on-board gigabit NICs work well with the bge driver. I have been told that the mpt driver works with the SAS controller on the more expensive configurations of this box. Like most Dell servers I have used, the box is pretty loud. There is one strange thing with the SATA controller. In the boot messages I get this: atapci0: port 0xecb0-0xecb7,0xeca0-0xeca3,0xecb8-0xecbf,0xeca4-0xeca7,0xece0-0xecef mem 0xefdfe000-0xefdfffff irq 6 at device 14.0 on pci3 ata2: on atapci0 ata3: on atapci0 [...] ad4: DMA limited to UDMA33, device found non-ATA66 cable ad4: 238418MB at ata2-master UDMA33 As far as I know, the message doesn't make any sense, since it's a SATA drive. I don't know whether it has any actual effect or is simply a bogus warning. The drive doesn't seem slow to me so far. I recently bought a Dell E521. It runs XP with the normal problems :), I made it dual boot because eventually it should run FreeBSD and FreeBSD only. I tried FreeBSD 6.2, to no avail, even not with the USB ports disabled as suggested by Jean-Baptiste Quenot [1]. The results are the same as he describes. So I decided to go the brave way *cough* and get FreeBSD current /AMD64 as of 200611. I was able to boot, run the installer but it does not (as expected) understand the cdrom drive. However, it recognized the nic (bfe) so I could install over FTP from my other workstation. The install runs fine. After rebooting the system comes up fine. I installed cvsup, used the standard-supfile, ran cvsup, built world and a new GENERIC kernel. The system still boots fine (with mouse disconnected, that is). I compiled X, I am satisfied with the xorg 'nv' driver. Up till now I don't have problems with the mouse if I connect it after boot. Sound works as well (good job! :). So, my actual questions: 1) Since I could not find much info about problems with this machine after the post of Jean-Baptiste, I was wondering, is there still work being done on the USB-problems? 2) What is the status of de SATA driver for the CD/DVD player? The machine is not completely useless since it is dual boot, I am willing to do some tests (I am not a kernel programmer nor am I a low level hardware specialist). So if wanted, feel free to let me know. However, I was able to install OpenBSD 4.0 and Solaris 5.11 on it. Both of them can access the DVD-ROM, but neither supports the NIC "out of the box". Moreover, OpenBSD requires to disable ohci during boot (or compile a kernel without it); I couldn't find how to do that with FreeBSD yet (which will probably allow it to boot at least without crashing, maybe I try the BIOS changes to disable some USB ports).
