It seems deeper than that, though. If you query one of the other authoritative DNS server you get the CNAME for cvsup11: ;; ANSWER SECTION: cvsup11.freebsd.org. 3600 IN CNAME freebsd- mirror0.research.uu.net. and looking that up, you get no answer for the A record. So if you query any of the NS records for uu.net, you get referred to other NS servers for research.uu.net, and no answer to the A record: ;; AUTHORITY SECTION: research.uu.net. 3600 IN NS beast.research.uu.net. research.uu.net. 3600 IN NS auth03.ns.uu.net. research.uu.net. 3600 IN NS auth50.ns.uu.net. ;; ADDITIONAL SECTION: beast.research.uu.net. 3600 IN A 63.87.62.73 Querying the auth* hosts you get the same answer back; querying beast.research.uu.net I get no response: % dig freebsd-mirror0.research.uu.net @beast.research.uu.net dig: couldn't get address for 'beast.research.uu.net': not found and even: % dig freebsd-mirror0.research.uu.net @63.87.62.73 ; <<>> DiG 9.3.2-P1 <<>> freebsd-mirror0.research.uu.net @63.87.62.73 ; (1 server found) ;; global options: printcmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached so something is *really* wrong I think. Normally these research.uu.net servers are just 5ms from me and I believe they're in the same data center. I think ftp-master.eu is still syncing from ftp-master.us (indicated by the permission error as the permissions will be set right after all the packages are in) and as the i386 were just uploaded, it probably is also busy serving those to the mirror syncing from ftp-master.eu, possibly running out on available slot for mirrors and giving you a refused connection. There have been deleted around 200 GB of files during this weekend or monday. Either by some changes on ftp-master.FreeBSD.org (?), or by some communication error. I think we just need to be a bit more patient :) Yes, exactly ;o) However there was another problem today - we had backbone problems with several connection outages, which are hopefully fixed now. I apologize for this. IN NS beast.research.uu.net. research.uu.net. IN NS auth03.ns.uu.net. research.uu.net. The problem appeared around 2006-10-24 06:50:00 CET, where all deleted files can be checked by looking at /pub/logs/cvsup/update.log.delete on ftp-master.eu.FreeBSD.org. There temporarily disappeared substantial part of ports directory including 55 GB of distfiles (and maybe some others too - I'm checking it step by step). Fortunately, I have much more conservative mode on ftp.cz.FreeBSD.org, so I'm working on fast middle-restore from this server, which runs at speeds about 6 MB/s instead of 500 KB/s directly from ftp-master.FreeBSD.org. Unfortunately, I still do not understand, what really happened. -- Rudolf Cejka http://www.fit.vutbr.cz/~cejkar Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Information Technology Bozetechova 2, 612 66 Brno, Czech Republic From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 27 08:05:41 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: hubs@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A73016A403 for ; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 08:05:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tv@solnet.ch) Received: from mail01.solnet.ch (mail01.solnet.ch [212.101.4.135]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 12B0C43D58 for ; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 08:05:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tv@solnet.ch) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at mail01.solnet.ch Received: from mail01.solnet.ch ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail01.solnet.ch [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id uvk-FwPNJIzW; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 08:05:38 +0000 (GMT) Received: from [192.168.1.102] (home.bsdunix.ch [82.220.17.23]) by mail01.solnet.ch (Postfix) with ESMTP id 23F5B625A4; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 08:05:38 +0000 (GMT) Message-ID: <4541BD8E.6020602@solnet.ch> Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 10:04:30 +0200 From: Thomas Vogt User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 (Macintosh/20060909) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Rudolf Cejka References: <59adc1a0610261228i6ea1a92cjf693721d1a362330@mail.gmail.com> <20061026195151.GB80328@droso.net> <20061026231835.GA2133@fit.vutbr.cz> <20061027071454.GP80328@droso.net> <20061027074719.GA51061@fit.vutbr.cz> In-Reply-To: <20061027074719.GA51061@fit.vutbr.cz> X-Enigmail-Version: 0.94.0.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: hubs@freebsd.org Subject: Re: rsync problems X-BeenThere: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "FreeBSD Distributions Hubs: mail sup ftp" List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 08:05:41 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi Rudolf Ok that explains why we suddenly lost most of our i386 packages on our mirror. I *might*... :-( The last time we needed to increase the space available on ftp-master it got done by merging two partitions together. The two partitions had been /ftpmaster and /home. The resulting partition is named /home. This was the first time /home filled since we did the merge. Cron jobs on ftp-master build the sup files that cvsupd uses as the lists of files in the various collections. Wanna take a guess where the sup files it builds get stored? I'm guessing when the partition got full some of those files wound up being corrupted. I did not touch 6.1 packages (the release packages are never rebuilt after the release), so it is probably because of the cvsup problems ken mentioned.
