Then I performed the following: make buildworld make buildkernel make installkernel I then looked at the UPDATING file to see what it suggested I do differently from the normal sequence that always worked before. Then I tried: make kernel KERNCONF=GENERIC Then I ran: mergemaster -p The result was that it showed me that /etc/group had not been updated with the changes that are supposed to be made before running the make buildworld sequence. So I made the noted changes to the /etc/group file and ran again. Then it was successful. I ran make installworld and it failed with touch not being able to locate a file. (I cannot recall where it was in the script, but it was pretty close to the initial part of its run. This was done in single user mode. I booted back up to multiuser run level and thinking that the experiment was a failure decided that I would reinstall 6.0 Release...but...I thought what would it hurt if I were to run the following: make buildworld installworld mergemaster reboot This brought me to the present state of the system where the system has hung at the step following: Starting sshd. -C to abort the script> I sincerely hope that I have been of help to you. >How-To-Repeat: explained in description >Fix: explained in description >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sun May 14 02:30:29 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 13C5216A400 for ; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:30:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7358D43D4C for ; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:30:20 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k4E2UKdY032559 for ; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:30:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k4E2UKRZ032558; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:30:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sun, 14 May 2006 02:30:20 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200605140230.k4E2UKRZ032558@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Otto Schulze Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 898DB16A400 for ; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:23:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 27E9E43D4C for ; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:23:58 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id k4E2Nvmd085451 for ; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:23:58 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id k4E2Nvtq085448; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:23:57 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200605140223.k4E2Nvtq085448@www.freebsd.org> Date: Sun, 14 May 2006 02:23:57 GMT From: Otto Schulze To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: i386/97239: make installkermel script and make installworld script is broken for current source code tree 7.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 14 May 2006 02:30:29 -0000 >Number: 97239 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: make installkermel script and make installworld script is broken for current source code tree 7.0 >Confidential: no >Severity: critical >Priority: high >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun May 14 02:30:19 GMT 2006 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Otto Schulze >Release: 7.0 Release >Organization: American Conservatory of Music >Environment: >Description: This is a followup to my previous bug report on make buildworld from 6.0 Release to 7.0 Current. My system failed to boot properly after the build. It stopped and froze after printing: Starting sshd. After approximately 1 hour elapsed, I type a and it reported that I had interrupted the script at /etc/rc.d/sendmail. It then went on to start the cron, Local Package initialization, Additional TCP options, started default moused, and announced it would begin background filesystem checks in 60 seconds. The system then printed the date and paused for over 30 seconds and gave the FreeBSD login banner. However, when I attempted a login, it would not accept my input, because the Console Terminal is frozen. There is no disk activity going on, and the console refuses to respond to to break the frozen condition. Thank you for resolving the bug. >How-To-Repeat: explained above >Fix: No fix to report >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sun May 14 06:19:12 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: i386@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D627E16A409; Sun, 14 May 2006 06:19:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost1.sentex.ca (smarthost1.sentex.ca [64.7.153.18]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5215443D45; Sun, 14 May 2006 06:19:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp2.sentex.ca (smtp2c.sentex.ca [64.7.153.30]) by smarthost1.sentex.ca (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id k4E6JBwl080492; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:19:11 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp2.sentex.ca (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id k4E6JBwt043982; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:19:11 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 034CD7302F; Sun, 14 May 2006 02:19:10 -0400 (EDT) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20060514061911.034CD7302F@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Sun, 14 May 2006 02:19:10 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.88.1, clamav-milter version 0.88.1 on clamscanner4 X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on i386/i386 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 14 May 2006 06:19:13 -0000 TB --- 2006-05-14 05:00:59 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2006-05-14 05:00:59 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for i386/i386 TB --- 2006-05-14 05:00:59 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2006-05-14 05:01:25 - checking out the source tree TB --- 2006-05-14 05:01:25 - cd /tinderbox/HEAD/i386/i386 TB --- 2006-05-14 05:01:25 - /usr/bin/cvs -f -R -q -d/home/ncvs update -Pd -A src TB --- 2006-05-14 05:08:22 - building world (CFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2006-05-14 05:08:22 - cd /src TB --- 2006-05-14 05:08:22 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything TB --- 2006-05-14 06:15:47 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2006-05-14 06:15:47 - cd /src/sys/i386/conf TB --- 2006-05-14 06:15:47 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2006-05-14 06:15:47 - building LINT kernel (COPTFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2006-05-14 06:15:47 - cd /src TB --- 2006-05-14 06:15:47 - /usr/bin/make buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Sun May 14 06:15:47 UTC 2006 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies [...] echo "#define ALTQ 1" > opt_global.h echo "#define DEV_BPF 1" > opt_bpf.h rm -f .depend mkdep -f .depend -a -nostdinc -D_KERNEL -DKLD_MODULE -I- -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -I. -I@ -I@/contrib/altq -I/obj/src/sys/LINT /src/sys/modules/lmc/../../dev/lmc/if_lmc.c ===> lnc (depend) @ -> /src/sys machine -> /src/sys/i386/include make: don't know how to make if_lnc.c. It has ran fine from FreeBSD 4.x through 5.x. I am using the Nvidia AGP, agp is disable in my kernel, I have no real tweaks other than hardware cursor. My machine is an Intel P4 3.0Ghz w/ HT enabled. HT is also enabled in my kernel. If I start my machine with just: compat5x_enable="YES" dbus_enable="YES" gdm_enable="YES" My machine boots fine, runs fine, etc. If I add any of the following to /etc/rc.conf: mysql_enable="YES" samba_enable="YES" cupsd_enable="YES" squid_enable="YES" apache22_enable="YES" webmin_enable="YES" Not all of them, but any one of them on it's own, I get a bar of random pixels at the top of my screen (about 10-20 lines of pixels). This bar changes as I move the mouse. The color of each pixels changes as I move up / down / left / right with the mouse. When I upgraded from 6.0 to 6.1 the problem became MUCH worse. After logging in (the gnome 2.14 login looks fine), my screen goes completely black, then reappears with stripes of random pixels down the screen. I can then see my desktop loading, in a video mode that does not look correct (wrong bit depth, horribly stretched). when I press CTRL-F1, I see the console, but I can not type in it. When I press CTRL-F9 to go back to Gnome 2.14 I then see my screen correctly, but with the 10-20 lines of random pixels. I have asked about this problem many times on the FreeBSD Questions Digest, and have had many suggestions on things to try. I have tried the following: Disable the nvidia-driver (x11/nvidia-driver) and boot with freebsd's driver. I still saw the 10-20 lines of random data. Remove any cards in your machine that may conflict with the video card. I removed my ATI TV Wonder Pro Card (and thought the problem had left, but it's back). Change resolutions (lower the resolution). I see the problem in 640x480 up to 1280x1024 (flat panel monitor, dvi connection). Disable Hyper Threading. I recompiled without it, disabled it, and still had the problem. I even went as far as reinstalling from scratch (format, reinstall using new ISO). I have had a few people say it could be my video card, but I dual boot to Windows XP, and have no problems at all in XP ... nor do I have any problems in BSD if I disable everything in rc.conf (like squid, samba, etc). If I disable everything, boot into freebsd (which will allow it to work fine), and THEN load squid, etc, my system runs fine, without any of the random pixels. It appears as if data is being pushed onto my screen buffer. Although I am not an expert, it's the same effect you would have gotten on an old Atari computer if you wrote random pixels to video ram. I would be more than happy to supply more information, screenshots, dmesg, rc.conf, etc. >How-To-Repeat: I have asked people to reproduce the problem, and they have said they can not. However on my machine, I do the following: RELENG_6_1 Nvidia 5900fx Install Gnome 2.12 - 2.14 In rc.conf enable cupsd, squid, webmin, etc (any larger app) Boot the machine, and you will see random pixels. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 15 11:02:45 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7AD8316A402 for ; Mon, 15 May 2006 11:02:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 02E8443D58 for ; Mon, 15 May 2006 11:02:45 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k4FB2iVX075186 for ; Mon, 15 May 2006 11:02:44 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k4FB2hvE075180 for freebsd-i386@freebsd.org; Mon, 15 May 2006 11:02:43 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 15 May 2006 11:02:43 GMT Message-Id: <200605151102.k4FB2hvE075180@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 15 May 2006 11:02:45 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. I have identical machines running e7501 motherboards, one with 2GB of RAM (I pulled the extra out) and another with 4GB and the one with 4GB will crash every couple of months under heavy workloads. I have PAE disabled, USB devices out of the kernel and usbd disabled. I just cvsup'd to RELENG_5_4 today and the patch as described at... http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/i386/i386/pmap.c.diff? r1=1.523&r2=1.524&f=h ...still does not seem to be in the source tree? This bug causes 5.4 systems with 4GB+ of RAM to be unstable and is a critical issue. It seems that this patch works and just needs to applied to 5.4? http://groups.google.com/group/lucky.freebsd.i386/browse_thread/ thread/a44a3dd9a2556725/ce27b27e2a9dc103%23ce27b27e2a9dc103 http://groups.google.com/group/lucky.freebsd.stable/browse_thread/ thread/99978f6cbf071223/136ab31fcd339d5c?lnk=st&q=freebsd+4GB+PAE +thread&rnum=5&hl=en Thanks, - mike Michael F. My motherboard has a Crystal Semiconductor CS4236, and I had two other Crystal cards lying around covered by the same driver snd_mss which also gave the exact same error message. You can find full specifications of my computer (if needed) @ http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ban_gx1/specs.htm (It's the Pentium III 600MHz model). The error messages in question are as follows: May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: pcm0: at port 0x600-0x603,0x388-0x38b,0x220-0x22f irq 5 drq 1,0 pnpid CSC6835 on isa0 May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED 201000 0xff May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED 1002000 0xff May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED 203000 0xff May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED 1002000 0xff May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED 1000000 0xff May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED 1000000 0xff May 19 20:42:53 eve kernel: mss: Auto calibration timed out(1). It's like this for other Crystal cards I have as well. I also tried compiling the module into the kernel directly to no affect, and originally I installed 6.0-RELEASE using the ISO available on the site with no modifications or recompiling done. I upgraded to 7.0-CURRENT to see if my problem was resolved in a later version, which did not help. If ACPI is disabled, I apparently get two pcm devices, one called pcm1 which after initialized causes AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED for 20 minutes, and pcm0 which initilized after the error message flood. After that passes, the speakers respond to beeps from tab completion in bash, but if I attempt to use mpg123 or mplayer the computer promptly freezes up with never-ending AD_WAIT_INIT FAILED messages regardless of whether I use the device node for pcm0 (dsp1.0) or pcm1 (dsp 1.1).
