I have FreeBSD 6.1 installed as a dual-boot with Windows XP Pro SP2. I have successfully installed the operating system and am able to use the command line. The problem is when I try to initiate the X server (kdm, xdm, Xorg, xinit, etc...) the screen goes blank as if to show the window manager, but when it comes back on it is all scrambled to the point where nothing can be seen except for a scrambled square in the middle of the screen which is the mouse. When I try to go back to the command line (ctrl+alt+backspace) the screen changes from the first scrambles and displays a whole new set of scrambles. The only way to see even the command line again is to reboot the entire machine. I used a certain command (can't remember) with Xorg to generate 'xorg.conf.new' in '/root'. I can see that there is an ATI driver being initiated with X. I have no idea wh at to do. Sadly this is not a problem, but a userquestion (The big difference is that other might already have solved this, while problems need to be fixed by the developer team); but lets give it a try anyway ( I WILL close the PR though and refer you to http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions . Starting X implies "startx" and not "xinit". Startx by default gives you a very simple window manager (if nothing else had been installed and/or configured to startup) but it is at least a start. Try it and you will see, please defer to the mailinglist i pointed out for more questions on the subject. Goodluck! I have 3 different kernels. However, no matter which kernel I choose at the boot prompt, I always get "BTX halted". An example is reporduced below. - FreeBSD/i386 boot Default 0:ad(0,a)/boot/loader boot: /boot/kernel/kernel int=00000006 err=00000000 efl=00010002 eip=c0443c30 eax=c0443c30 ebx=c0a273c4 ecx=c0a273c4 edx=a020001e esi=00000050 edi=c0443c30 ebp=00002275 esp=0009eaf0 cs:eip=ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff-ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff-ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ss:esp=69 95 00 00 00 00 00 80-1e 00 20 a0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-a0 dc 00 78 4b 09 00 00 BTX halted At this point I have to reboot with CTRL+ALT+DEL. Only the following registers change for 3 different kernels: eip = eax = edi, ebx = ecx, ebp. All other values do not change from one kernel to another. Bootstrapping with loader(8) works fine, I can load any kernel. I use FreeBSD 6.0-release on compaq armada 1700 laptop with BIOS dated 11/30/1999. I cannot find a newer BIOS version for this model. I've read several reports regarding BTX halted issue on old compaq. Most people report turing off UDMA or DMA in BIOS as a solution. I cannot see any DMA settings in my BIOS (I used Compaq Computer Setup for Portables, ver 2.01H dated 24 Jan 1999). I'm also not sure if it applies in my case as booting with loader(8) works with no problems. >How-To-Repeat: Reboot and hit any key before loader(8) starts. I installed a brand new ST3802110A hard drive and moved an existing installation onto it. The motherboard is an HP Asus CUR-DLS with dual P3 933 and SMP enabled: acpi0: atapci1: ad0: 76319MB When the drive was running at UDMA33, almost every time I entered a command and hit enter there was a delay and a distinctive humming sound before the command was processed. It sounded almost like the drive kept powering down until it was accessed and then powered up again. I tried a few disk intensive commands like pkgversion, portsclean and kernel compilation which worked fine, but again, shortly after completion you would hear the drive hum quieten. I also saw a couple of READ/WRITE_DMA errors but I do not have these available any longer. I tried disabling DMA which forced back to PIO4 mode. This resulted in a very occasional: kernel: ad0: TIMEOUT - WRITE_MUL retrying (1 retry left) LBA=4615355 kernel: ad0: TIMEOUT - READ_MUL retrying (1 retry left) LBA=83786751 Even during times of relative inactivity. At one stage (when running at PIO4) I returned to the computer and it had completely locked up, so I had to physically power down. I tried disabling ACPI and even APIC to no avail. >How-To-Repeat: Presumably you could repeat this by running 6.1-STABLE or 6.2-PRERELEASE on a Seagate ST3802110A connected to an onboard IDE connector of an HP Asus CUR-DLS motherboard. >Fix: I installed a PCI IDE ATA100 controller and connected the problematic drive: atapci0: The hums and associated delays have now disappeared and 48+ hours have passed without a problem. Furthermore, the drive is now running at the intended UDMA100 and performing well. More details can be provided if necessary, though I would rather perform as little reproduction as possible since uptime of the machine is quite critical. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 23 19:20:30 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 82B8C16A494 for ; Mon, 23 Oct 2006 19:20:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5060243D70 for ; Mon, 23 Oct 2006 19:20:26 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k9NJKQ6Q075317 for ; Mon, 23 Oct 2006 19:20:26 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k9NJKQck075316; Mon, 23 Oct 2006 19:20:26 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 19:20:26 GMT Message-Id: <200610231920.k9NJKQck075316@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: Remko Lodder Cc: Subject: Re: i386/104719: Seagate ST3802110A errors/delays when using PIO4 or UDMA33 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Remko Lodder List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 19:20:30 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/104719; it has been noted by GNATS. I've tried mbmon, healtd, consolehm etc. Some don't work at all (NO HW SENSOR AVAILABLE or simmilar message) or showing constant temperature 255C. I'v tried to load smb/smbus/*pm modules - no effect, tried to recompile kernel with: device smbus device viapm device smb device iic device ic device iicbus device iicbb device iicsmb no effect. Even NO /dev/smbX device present and 'dmesg | grep smb' or 'sysctl -a | grep thermal' shows nothing. Then I found, that this south bridge is using 'VIA VT1211 LPC Super I/O' chip for I/O operations accordingly to thermal sensors and there is no driver support in BSD, so the systems do not understand it. But I found that driver for this chip was introduced in OpenBSD 3.8: "Modified files: sys/arch/i386/conf: GENERIC sys/arch/amd64/conf: GENERIC sys/dev/isa : files.isa share/man/man4 : Makefile Added files: sys/dev/isa : viasio.c viasioreg.h share/man/man4 : viasio.4 Log message: Add viasio(4), a driver for VIA VT1211 LPC Super I/O found on some VIA CPU based boards. The driver provides temperature, voltage and fan tachometers values through the sysctl interface. " I've tried to port this driver to FreeBSD but no effect :( can't even compile kernel. Is it possible to create/port such a driver in FreeBSD? It would be very popular, because I found a lot of simmilar problems on the net... >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: Write own VT1211 driver or port from the OpenBSD (viasio) >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 25 17:59:33 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9E0EE16A40F; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 17:59:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from remko@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD47243D6B; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 17:59:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from remko@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (remko@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k9PHxSSe057393; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 17:59:28 GMT (envelope-from remko@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from remko@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k9PHxR6K057389; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 17:59:27 GMT (envelope-from remko) Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2006 17:59:27 GMT From: Remko Lodder Message-Id: <200610251759.k9PHxR6K057389@freefall.freebsd.org> To: dcheong@kgv.edu.hk, remko@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: i386/104641: FreeBSD on HP DL140 server X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2006 17:59:33 -0000 Synopsis: FreeBSD on HP DL140 server State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: remko State-Changed-When: Wed Oct 25 17:59:14 UTC 2006 State-Changed-Why: The submitter reports that this can be closed. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=104641 From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 25 18:04:10 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A8C2216A417; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:04:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from remko@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1DD1B43D6E; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:04:07 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from remko@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (remko@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k9PI46wW057979; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:04:06 GMT (envelope-from remko@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from remko@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k9PI46oc057975; Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:04:06 GMT (envelope-from remko) Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:04:06 GMT From: Remko Lodder Message-Id: <200610251804.k9PI46oc057975@freefall.freebsd.org> To: ghostks@inbox.lv, remko@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: i386/104812: can't get to work SMBUS or simmilar method for getting thermal sensor data X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:04:10 -0000 Synopsis: can't get to work SMBUS or simmilar method for getting thermal sensor data State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: remko State-Changed-When: Wed Oct 25 18:03:26 UTC 2006 State-Changed-Why: This is not a problem but a user question / request. It appears that 6.1 is not capable of sending out UDP checksum 0xffff when the internal combination of pseudo-header, upd header and udp payload requires that. In stead of that, the machine sends out 0x0000 as UDP checksum which is interpreted as "no checksum calculated". We tracked the failure down to the bge driver. We found that the bge device driver uses a feature called "checksum offload". When we switch that feature off, the system operates accoring to RFC 768. We noticed this with FreeBSD 6.1 on a Compaq/HP DL380G3 system. Relevant lines from the messages file are: Oct 25 11:51:55 gandalf kernel: FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE #1: Wed Oct 25 11:31:21 CEST 2006 - - Oct 25 11:51:55 gandalf kernel: bge0: mem 0xf06f0000-0xf06fffff irq 29 at device 1.0 on pci2 Oct 25 11:51:55 gandalf kernel: bge0: No checksum offload (This log is from after we created a patch for ourselves, the last log line is due to that patch) We created a dirty fix to get outselves out of trouble for the moment: we switched of the "hwassist" feature in the initialisation phase of the bge driver to give the checksum calculation task back to software in stead of the Broadcom hardware. Kind regards, Frans van der Veer Senior software engineer. R&D department, PEEK Traffic B.V., The Netherlands. >How-To-Repeat: We repeated the problem by creating a small UDP echo program that answered on a machine sending UDP packets. With ethereal (run on another machine since ethereal is troubles by the same checksum offload feature as well) we checked the checksum, did a hexadecimal calculator exercise and modified the data the echo program is sending out to achieve checksum 0xffff. >Fix: As told, we created a "dirty fix" to get us out of trouble for the time being. In my case the system is connected thru a KVM which may be an issue but I was not in a position to test without the KVM. Disabling atkbdc0 and sc0 in the boot loader and using a serial console works. I'm updating the system to 6-STABLE to see if that helps. In my case, ACPI will not start - the boot loader reports a checksum error - and is disabled. --=20 Peter Jeremy --bg08WKrSYDhXBjb5 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFFQchM/opHv/APuIcRAgJxAKCO6Qrzmfo7axVjLKTrUXpxDEhdKwCeNViX 1wHU4rAoxWZqpvHpr5jiWek= =DZ/1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --bg08WKrSYDhXBjb5-- From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 27 19:30:26 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C958916A40F for ; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 19:30:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9CFC443D76 for ; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 19:30:20 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k9RJUKCD038711 for ; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 19:30:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k9RJUKIM038705; Fri, 27 Oct 2006 19:30:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 19:30:20 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200610271930.k9RJUKIM038705@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, "Jeffrey D.
