I've got an Ultra 1 200E and I started it in order to install FreeBSD 6.1R. Unfortunately at startup it displays a strange CPU frequency (IIRC 50MHz). Trying to find out what is the problem I have discovered that one oscillator (?) is missing on the Motherboard. It was removed by some accident (the socket is still there). The oscillator is labeled on the mainboard as X2302 (close to the PSU and UPA connector). Next to it there is also a capacitor missing labeled C2356 (I have no clue if it was there or not, I see only the soldering pads). Could somebody with a similar motherboard (A12 - SUN part 501-4358) tell me the marking/type of the missing oscillator and eventually capacitor? Thank you! Regards, G. Ardelean. P.S. Please reply off the list. I have a few issues with openbsd and am considering migrating over to freebsd. openbsd does not support SMP on the sparc64, I have 4 processors and am only using 1. I understand that SMP is fully supported in freebsd. I am currently using RaidFrame to raid5 the Enterprise Network Array of 14 fiber channel drives. Does freebsd support hardware raid? specifically, DPT raid cards? If not, does it have a mature RaidFrame option I can compile into the kernel? I currently am running to Raids, Raid0 is where I have my boot drives raided together, and then Raid1 is where I have all of my fiberchannels raided together. If you don't support Raidframe, but do support hardware raid, have you a solution where I can raid my two boot drives together? or do I just go get another raid card and do it that way? Oh, if you don't support DPT that's OK, I'll go buy whatever you guys do support; I'll just have to have a hardware list, which I'm sure is available on your site. Also, I am running postgresql as my database, I'm assuming Postgres is available? I am also thinking that you probably are using a 1.x version of Apache? like Openbsd does, because it's more secure and there seems to be an issue with Apache2 licensing? And finally, the big thing about openbsd's claims is that they are very secure, which I suspect is probably true; how much, if any, is there a real difference in the security of your kernel, versus openbsd? I'm assuming you guys have everything chrooted by default like openbsd does, but I can't imagine there is too much of a difference in a default install; it's not like you guys are just going to leave known vulnerabilities unfixed. Have you an idea, like 1 to 100 scale on security? or is there a website where I can find a benchmark? The fact that openbsd doesn't support hardware raid, and doesn't support SMP on the sparc6, along with a few other issues is rather frustrating, and I don't mean to bother with so many questions, but it's a big step to reformat my drives, take my site off line, and make the big leap, and then find out during the install, that something I need isn't supported. yeah, and one other thing, for some reason my probe during boot doesn't find my floppy drive, can you imagine that? So I have this huge computer, running securely, but I can't use my floppy. Any input would help tremendously, thanks for the time. You can probably use hardware raid cards. You might be able to use your DPT card, but I'm not sure. There is also software RAID available via gmirror, gstripe, etc. The best bet for your card is to just boot an install CD and look in the dmesg to see if it finds your disks. > Also, I am running postgresql as my database, I'm assuming Postgres is > available? Memory usage for roughly the same processes wasn't this high under Solaris 10, in some cases nowhere near as high. The machine runs great, I just wanted to know if was normal or not. The apache build is 1.x with PHP and about 5 other modules, nothing fancy. Still, 30MB for sshd seems pretty high even though that is just the virtual size. Is it something about the sparc64 libraries that pushes the virtual sizes much higher than with 32-bit sparc? Could I make any significant savings by doing some critial builds with a newer version of gcc? I'm not worried right now, mostly just curious. -- shannon "AT" widomaker.com -- ["People should have access to the data which you have about them. I was forced to import a Binutils we didn't need to get TLS on i386 - and DFR didn't at all need it to to make TLS work on i386. Please back up your claims. However, I can say that due to the introduction of new privileged registers sun4v will not compile with the binutils in the tree. I'd like to think we want to be able to build for sun hardware that isn't EOL. I switched from NetBSD and found I could no longer drop ntpd's root privileges. systrace seems to be missing from FreeBSD, too. Finally, I'm not sure if FreeBSD does non-exec mappings like NetBSD and OpenBSD do. but I don't think there is anything as good as geli on OpenBSD. The software RAID on FreeBSD is geom RAID3. I've never used it myself, but my understanding is, RAID3 instead of RAID5 and some changes to UFS allowing larger than 512byte sector size manage to plug the RAID5 write hole. There is also vinum, but geom is the future I think. RAIDframe is on NetBSD/OpenBSD not FreeBSD.
