I'll migrate from Debian-sid to FreeBSD if things are suitable. I find Xorg has gone backwards by creating all kinds of build dependencies on the host environment by using Autoconf and dpkg. If i use XFree86, will any of the ports package dependencies complain about not having Xorg? Is XFree86 ports in FreeBSD up to date and maintained, or will i need to do it myself? No, the pre-built binary packages have all been compiled against Xorg, and will therefore complain if you have XFree86 installed. If you build packages yourself using the ports system it should work fine with either Xorg or Xfree86. (Packages are just pre-compiled ports, so you are not really losing anything except some time by using the ports system directly.) > > >>Is XFree86 ports in FreeBSD up to date and maintained, or will i need to > >>do > >>it myself? > > > >Well, I'm trying to maintain it, you are welcome to help though :-) There > >is currently patch to upgrade ports to 4.6.0 at > >http://people.freebsd.org/~lesi/xf46-277.diff -- Erik Trulsson ertr1013@student.uu.se From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 5 09:49:26 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 319D616A478 for ; Mon, 5 Jun 2006 09:49:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dejan.lesjak@ijs.si) Received: from mail.ijs.si (mailman.ijs.si [193.2.4.66]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9DC7B43D45 for ; Mon, 5 Jun 2006 09:49:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dejan.lesjak@ijs.si) Received: from localhost (mail.ijs.si [193.2.4.66]) by mail.ijs.si (Postfix) with ESMTP id 72B3717B8AF; Mon, 5 Jun 2006 11:49:24 +0200 (CEST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at ijs.si Received: from mail.ijs.si ([193.2.4.66]) by localhost (mail.ijs.si [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 7O5rEhv4SD9b; Mon, 5 Jun 2006 11:49:17 +0200 (CEST) Received: from edina.ijs.si (unknown [IPv6:2001:1470:ff80:88:2e0:81ff:fe2d:22a2]) by mail.ijs.si (Postfix) with ESMTP id 36B3B17B83A; Mon, 5 Jun 2006 11:49:16 +0200 (CEST) Received: from radagast.ijs.si (radagast.ijs.si [193.2.4.168]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by edina.ijs.si (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA98C5089D; Mon, 5 Jun 2006 11:49:16 +0200 (CEST) Received: from localhost.ijs.si (localhost.ijs.si [127.0.0.1]) by radagast.ijs.si (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id k559nGsm025381; Mon, 5 Jun 2006 11:49:16 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from dejan.lesjak@ijs.si) From: Dejan Lesjak To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2006 11:49:16 +0200 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.1 References: <4483F479.2020100@netspace.net.au> <200606051123.30711.dejan.lesjak@ijs.si> <4483FAA5.5090104@netspace.net.au> In-Reply-To: <4483FAA5.5090104@netspace.net.au> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200606051149.16460.dejan.lesjak@ijs.si> Cc: Subject: Re: XFree86 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2006 09:49:28 -0000 On Monday 05 June 2006 11:34, Russell Shaw wrote: > Dejan Lesjak wrote: > > On Monday 05 June 2006 11:08, Russell Shaw wrote: > >>If i use XFree86, will any of the ports package dependencies complain > >> about not having Xorg? > > > > Packages will complain, ports shouldnt though. Unfortunately no. Binary packages record dependencies on other packages and as X.org is default X11 (for contemporary versions of FreeBSD) dependencies on xorg-* packages are recorded for official packages. make.conf is not consulted when installing packages at all. If you install stuff from ports though, your setting of X_WINDOW_SYSTEM will cause your own packages to depend on XFree86-* packages so in that case things that rely on X will be happy as long as you build them from ports yourself. Could you please visit http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/x11@freebsd.org.html and correct the problems listed there? The individual port with a problem is x11-servers/xorg-server-snap. If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting the fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically and does not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem has been submitted. Please do *NOT* send your response to me directly; I do not necessarily have time to commit your fix; please instead submit a PR via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost. Problems are usually of two types: 1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package. If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port directly. If not, you should create the updated port on your own machine, test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -uNr old-port updated-port". If you added or deleted any files, please make an explicit note of it. 2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include: a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade) b) If the README or other support files in the software documentation mention where to get the software package, use one of those sites. c) Use a search engine to find another place to get the original DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why. Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the Makefile. Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror. Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time. These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is committed, as a reminder. When starting Xorg with dri enabled, I get nothing but four blank screens (I tried to disable all other modules except glx and dri -- same results)... With dri disabled, all four heads work as expected -- and slow. The Xorg's log files are availale here: http://aldan.algebra.com/~mi/mi.Xorg.0.log.dri.txt http://aldan.algebra.com/~mi/mi.Xorg.0.log.nondri.txt The verbose dmesg is at http://aldan.algebra.com/~mi/mi.dmesg.verbose.txt and the xorg.conf (with dri disabled) -- at: http://aldan.algebra.com/~mi/mi.xorg.conf Please, advise. Thank you, -mi P.S. Does anyone even care for such bug reports, or are the radeon problems too numerous to address withing FreeBSD and we must just wait for better drivers from maintainers?
