This happens primarily when X is in a 24bpp mode; if I reduce the video resolution in X to 16bpp, it works much, much better (though there is still an occasional issue). This started happening about the time I transitioned from XFree to X.org. I am running moused, with a mouse type of "auto". Within X, I'm using the "mouse" driver, protocol "auto" with device "/dev/sysmouse". Options for 5 buttons and zAxisMapping of "4 5" are used, though turning this off works in x.org now, and makes no difference. I use Xinerama on dual monitors; TwinView seems to make no difference. It happens with both a Matrox G450 (open source drivers) or an nVidia FX1000 (nVidia drivers). The mouse itself is a Logitech MX700 (wireless) attached through a PS/2 adapter to a Tyan MPX motherboard. Otherwise, the mouse works well. Any suggestions on how I can fix this would really be appreciated. If the mouse wheel is not mapped properly, then using it to scroll down should not work, and it does. It should not work in the reverse direction either, and it does, but unreliably. It also does not explain why changing the bit depth in X makes any difference, yet it does. If the mapping is not right, then the mouse wheel should not work at all. Could you explain what I am missing? I'm amazed it worked at all. That it was not the mapping became obvious when I used xev, an X program that displays mouse clicks and a whole lot more information. Nine of the 10 buttons responded well when they were pressed or moved; the only one that did not was the scroll wheel that would move up a page. It was pretty clear to me that either it had failed electrically, or that there was something else wrong with it. I took the mouse apart, and found loads of cat hair forced into the wheel, which is slotted. There is a transmitter on one side of the slots and a receiver on the other; undoubtedly there is a pulse counter that records the number of clicks. Apparently the scrolling direction moved the mass of cat hair enough that it worked in one direction but not the other. It took me two tries to get it all, but now it works flawlessly. It seems that my comment about the differing response when X11 was set to different modes was a red herring. The hair must just have moved differently when I tried that. Who knows. Frank
