The only problem I ran into was after following the step of make install in xorg, it began running pkg_config and giving the message that there was a dependency loop with xorg-libs. I ctl-C'd out of it. It was hanging on registering xorg-7.1, however, looking at /var/db/pkg showed xorg-7.1 there. I ran pkgdb -F which gave me the chance to fix it. I was so euphoric that it had worked I neglected to write down my choices, thinking my memory would serve, which I fear, it didn't. There were a few conflicts (it didn't remove xorg-server-6.9, so I chose, during pkgdb -F to unregister it.) At any rate, everything seems to be working. I used a PCBSD installation, because I was in a hurry to try this, and PCBSD gives me a working X environment in about 20 minutes. I followed the instructions completely--I think, however, that I could have gotten away with, rather than the entire xorg-drivers port to go through and just install what I needed, mouse, keyboard, vesa for emergency and xf86-video-mga. At any rate, I just wanted to report success, and thank you folks for all your hard work and your guide to upgrading, which worked beautifully for me. When I have a bit of time, I think I'm going to dump this drive to a spare, in case it doesn't work, and try it on my main workstation. Great job. Always happy to read about success :-) I think you guys have done an excellent job. It was, with the above mentioned exceptions, completely smooth. Fortunately, you're using the later version of the mga driver (as the early xorg-7.1 driver didn't work properly--just about everyone but Ubuntu and their derivatives have fixed it though, including Debian.) In the next few days, I'll do another run, and this time, be more careful to write down where I run into trouble. (I might also get brave and just put in keyboard mouse, my mga card and vesa drivers.) If it goes as smoothly as last time, I think I might really get bold, throw in an extra hard drive on my main workstation (as I'm far too lazy to wait for it to build a package for everything depending on X) do a dump restore in case I break things, and then try it on the main workstation. I am really impressed with the job you folks have done, I did not expect it to be anywhere near this easy. I figured the PCBSD install was a good test, as it runs KDE, and I figured, if all the KDE stuff worked, that was a good sign. (The dependency loop that I ran into, I later realized, was because my eye had skipped the step to pkgdb -F after installing xorg-libraries. I've now been playing with it a few times, seeing how many corners I can cut and still have it work. As mentioned, rather than installing the xorg-drivers port, I'm getting by with mouse, keyboard and mga for my video card. However, I notice that whichever of these I first install installs xorg-server as well, but doesn't remove the old xorg-server. I'm guessing that might have happened with the first installation as well. I wonder if it might work better (I'm going to experiment with this too, in the next few days) to do the portupgrade -R xorg-server before doing the xorg-drivers. I also found that I could, after doing the rest of it, skip the make install of xorg, which seems to install anything that was missed. :) At any rate, at least on these PCBSD test installs, it installs xorg-server but leaves the old one in there. Doing portupgrade -R xorg-server simply ignores most of the packages and skips the xorg-6.9 package. Lastly, I repeat that I've been doing this on a PCBSD installation, as it gives me a running BSD with X in about 20 minutes, so it's quite possible that they're doing something slightly different than a normal FreeBSD installation. -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Xander: Are you ready to get down, you funky party weasel? Can you try to install more recent drivers (like 9742 beta drivers?). If you can, just pkg_delete -x nvidia-driver, download the tarball, do a manual sed 's|lib/modules|lib/xorg/modules|' on x11/*/Makefile and install with make install X11BASE=3D/usr/X11R6. --=20 Florent Thoumie flz@FreeBSD.org FreeBSD Committer --------------enigA9DC971F7678401515C616A5 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (FreeBSD) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFFbVI9MxEkbVFH3PQRCieOAJ9ILynqTtPNzp7121LVeIeGdy9/egCfWifl jeg/ahHtqVmwfokIDXoYYiI= =/VLE -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------enigA9DC971F7678401515C616A5-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 29 09:29:52 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 32D1916A412 for ; Wed, 29 Nov 2006 09:29:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from flz@FreeBSD.org) Received: from smtp1-g19.free.fr (smtp1-g19.free.fr [212.27.42.27]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 170D343CEE for ; Wed, 29 Nov 2006 09:29:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from flz@FreeBSD.org) Received: from smtp.xbsd.org (unknown [82.233.2.192]) by smtp1-g19.free.fr (Postfix) with ESMTP id EBE429B584; Wed, 29 Nov 2006 10:29:33 +0100 (CET) Received: from localhost (localhost.xbsd.org [127.0.0.1]) by smtp.xbsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0FA9D117B8; Wed, 29 Nov 2006 10:29:33 +0100 (CET) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at xbsd.org Received: from smtp.xbsd.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (srv1.xbsd.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id LL3rLlP-zoZA; Wed, 29 Nov 2006 10:29:09 +0100 (CET) Received: from [193.120.13.130] (cream.xbsd.org [193.120.13.130]) by smtp.xbsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C630611583; Wed, 29 Nov 2006 10:29:08 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <456D52CE.3050101@FreeBSD.org> Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2006 09:28:46 +0000 From: Florent Thoumie User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 (X11/20061126) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Russell Jackson References: <20061129012018.GA23939@cserv65.csub.edu> In-Reply-To: <20061129012018.GA23939@cserv65.csub.edu> X-Enigmail-Version: 0.94.1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha512; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="------------enigE4B44C6A922A9B376E420EE8" Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [xorg-7] libGLU circular dependancy X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2006 09:29:52 -0000 This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 2440 and 3156) --------------enigE4B44C6A922A9B376E420EE8 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Russell Jackson wrote: > When building libGLU, the USE_GL=3Dyes line causes a circular > dependancy on itself because it then wants libGLUT which needs > libGLU and so on and so forth. I'm running -CURRENT from November 17th with Xorg installed from the modular Xorg ports tree yesterday (though I first noticed this a couple weeks back when I built modular Xorg using jhbuild): [ adamk@sorrow - ~ ]: Xorg -version X Window System Version 7.1.1 Release Date: 12 May 2006 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1 Build Operating System: FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT i386 Current Operating System: FreeBSD sorrow.ashke.com 7.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT #7: Tue Nov 14 08:33:41 EST 2006 root@sorrow.ashke.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 Build Date: 28 November 2006 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Module Loader present If I boot up with DRI enabled in the config file, the server starts, but the very top of the screen shows some visual corruption. http://www.visualtech.com/screenshot.png I dropped the resolution of the image from 2304x864 to 1600x800, but you can still make out the corruption. What's particularly odd, though, is that the root window is never drawn. The background you see is actually the background from my previous X session (when I had DRI disabled), using windowmaker. This time I launched X and had fvwm2 in my .xinitrc file (you can see the outline of the fvwm pager in the screenshot, though that never finished drawing, either). After that nothing else gets drawn. I can move the mouse pointer, but that's about it. I can safely kill X and restart it, but the same thing happens unless I disable DRI. In comparison, I have another workstation with an AGP x700. -CURRENT from the same date, and modular Xorg from the ports tree from yesterday, too. It works just fine (start up fine, and the mesa demos run with acceleration). You can find the Xorg log file from the PCIe system at http://www.visualtech.com/Xorg.0.log.gz Any ideas? Thanks! Thanks. I'm slightly confused here. Will removing the xorg-6.9 package also remove that xorg-server-6.9 or should that be done with portupgrade in the order I mentioned, doing it before adding mouse, vid or keyboard driver? Thanks for these notes. This > is much appreciated. No, I don't think it is. It doesn't install the printserver, nestserver or docs but aside from that, it's really excellent for testing this. On a moderately old machine (1 gig AMD XP processor, 512 Megs DDR ram) it installs a working system with X in about twenty minutes. As this is just for testing the upgrade, I choose all the simpler options, so after a few clicks in the beginning, I can let it install and walk away. I recommend it for anyone who wants a working system with X-6.9 for testing. -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Xander: I wish dating was like slaying. Once again, I used a basic PCBSD install as my base. PCBSD doesn't have xorg-6.9 or the font, nest and print servers, so I was able to ignore the first instructions. Doing the pkgdb -F, rather than a libX11 -> xorg-libraries dependency, there was one for libXft and xorg-libraries, which I removed. It also fixed a number of stale dependencies. (I think that's expected, this is after upgrading xorg-libraries.) As per the new instructions, I upgraded xorg-server before going to xorg-drivers. Then, rather than the conservative way of installing the entire xorg-drivers metaport, I just installed drivers for the video card, mouse and keyboard. I skipped the other conservative (I'm not using conservative in a bad way here, careful would be an equally appropriate word) step of then cd-ing to the xorg megaport and installing it. After installing the drivers, I went straight to the portupgrade of libGL and libglut. As I believe has been mentioned, there were problems yesterday with the libglut portupgrade, but tonight, it was fine. When this was done, I typed startx and everything was fine. I really might try this on a serious workstation soon, these practice runs are making me feel it is pretty safe. Thanks again to all of the team who are working to make this an easy upgrade. -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Cordelia: Buffy, these men are rich, and I am not being shallow. I've been having a heck of a time getting my radeon card to work on my laptop with DRI. I have a Radeon Mobility 9700 card on an amd64 laptop. I've had the laptop for a year and a half, and have yet to get DRI working properly. I've searched the freebsd-x11, Xorg lists, and Google exhaustively. I was running 6.0-RELEASE with patches and using the vesa driver for everyday use. Although Xorg does not hang on 6.0-RELEASE, DRI is always disabled because the radeon driver is not new enough (supposed to be 1.17 or higher). I tried 6-STABLE and 6.1-RELEASE to upgrade the radeon kernel driver, but ever since around February of this year, using radeon on these platforms causes X to hang on startup as reported in both this and the xorg lists, without a clear solution. I've been paying attention to X-modular, hoping this would fix my problem. Unfortunately, it doesn't. Using 6-STABLE as on Nov 26 with a GENERIC kernel and X-org modular from Nov 29 results in X hanging at startup, like before, rendering the computer completely unresponsive and forcing a hard reboot. The vesa driver works fine, as expected. Also, disabling DRI on 6-STABLE and 6.1-RELEASE allows Xorg to work, but without hardware acceleration, and I have encountered some display corruption which has also been noted in the xorg lists without a clear resolution. The consensus seems to be "wait for better drivers", but I thought Xorg 7.2 would have better drivers than 6.8.2 and 6.9. Thus, for the last year, I have resorted to using the vesa driver. I can verify that it's not a bad card, because I *occasionally* use windows and everything is fine. Furthermore, both of my brothers have identical laptops to mine, and this problem occurs on their laptops as well. I understand it isn't a AIGLX problem, since that is disabled by default in the FreeBSD Xorg-7.2RC2 build due to other known issues. Does anyone have any idea what it going on? All I really want is to use the radeon driver for my radeon hardware all the time, and have things *just work* with DRI. I noticed that even in 6-STABLE (now 6.2-PRERELEASE, I guess), the radeon.ko that DRM loads is version 1.24.0, from 20060225. Is there anything newer than this? Do I have to run 7-CURRENT instead? Also, I know it's not a good idea to use current modules on a stable platform, but has anyone tried compiling DRM and radeon kernel modules from 7-current and using them on STABLE? Here is a bunch of information from my system. I couldn't provide a Xorg.0.log because the file is never written when the server hangs. I also don't have another machine or any means of setting up a serial console since I am currently studying in Sweden, and don't have my other computer here. Please let me know if there is any other information which would be useful in diagnosing this problem. Thanks for your help! I'm still running into the same problem, though. I've tried various options, even grabbed Rene's config file and used it (after editing the resolution down a few notches), but still get the same screen corruption. Should I go ahead and open up a pr for this bug? I'm assuming that this is a FreeBSD specific issue as the driver works fine on the same card under linux. I have set X11BASE to /usr/local. Concerning DRI I have run into two problems: - the DRI shared objects are searched for in the wrong place (somewhere in /usr/X11R6). I need to set the environment variable LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH to /usr/local/lib/modules/dri so DRI is working. - the graphics/dri port defines -DHAVE_POSIX_MEMALIGN in the freebsd-dri configuration files. There is no posix_memalign function in 6.2-PRERELEASE, so the dri .so file fails to load. I don't know if posix_memalign was added in current. Correcting these two things, I have DRI working on my Radeon X300 SE PCIe. I'm not sure if I should post PRs about these issues, because I don't know if the PR system is used for the x.org modular branch. regards German Tischler
