The 7.0R schedule for the doc tree on www.FreeBSD.org will be updated soon. The purpose of the doc slush is to slow down the rate of change in that tree in order to allow the translation teams time to finalize their work and to avoid last-minute breakage for the 7.0-RELEASE (and 6.3-RELEASE). As usual, this is not a real freeze and requires no formal commit approval procedure for your commit, but you are kindly requested not to commit large, structural changes during that period. Tagging of the doc tree is scheduled to take place on 5 December, 2007. Thank you for your cooperation and keep up the good work! --=20 Marc --k+w/mQv8wyuph6w0 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHQUIAzQ9RwE+OdOgRAucNAJ9Sjb2n92vLc9uZV1x3MR1nN0asyQCggY5x BVrpraPhoIcy8jDaNscUgos= =XQMU -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --k+w/mQv8wyuph6w0-- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Nov 19 11:06:07 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0ED5016A46B for ; Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:06:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E9FBD13C4D9 for ; Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:06:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id lAJB66Jt039804 for ; Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:06:06 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1/Submit) id lAJB668o039800 for freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:06:06 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:06:06 GMT Message-Id: <200711191106.lAJB668o039800@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Cc: Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:06:07 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. We could add newsflash entries once or twice a year for funding drives to provide a second link to the foundation. The current link on the main page just says "Foundation". We could change that wording to "Donate" but I'd rather just have one permanent link on the page to the FreeBSD Foundation rather than two to keep it from getting cluttered. On second look there are actually already two links on the front page to the foundation. One in the title nav bar and one in the footer for the copyright information. Should we change the title navbar to say "Donate" instead of "Foundation" on both the front and second level pages? Or should we just leave it as "Foundation" but also add a "Donate to the Foundation" button on all the second level pages in the footer, right-justified as described above? There could also be additional places to add links ot the foundation, such as in the Newbies page linked from the main page. We could add some information there about how donations help development. I also think a newsflash entry whenever you reach a fundraising goal or set a fundraising goal would be appropriate. You can just send text to freebsd-www@ or freebsd-doc@ or one of us personally to add the notice. - Murray From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 20 02:24:35 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3264E16A419 for ; Tue, 20 Nov 2007 02:24:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from deb@freebsd.org) Received: from ns1.scsiguy.com (www.scsiguy.com [70.89.174.89]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA28713C43E for ; Tue, 20 Nov 2007 02:24:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from deb@freebsd.org) Received: from [192.168.16.101] (c-24-8-202-36.hsd1.co.comcast.net [24.8.202.36]) (authenticated bits=0) by ns1.scsiguy.com (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id lAK1l2V3064758 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Mon, 19 Nov 2007 18:47:03 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from deb@freebsd.org) Message-ID: <47423C9E.3090804@freebsd.org> Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2007 18:47:10 -0700 From: Deb Goodkin User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 (Windows/20071031) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Murray Stokely References: <20071119222308.GB99904@bewilderbeast.blackhelicopters.org> <474078f80711191545s24e37234j930387517a986d52@mail.gmail.com> In-Reply-To: <474078f80711191545s24e37234j930387517a986d52@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: board@freebsdfoundation.org, doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: front page idea X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2007 02:24:35 -0000 Hi Murray, Here's some history for the request. We have a marketing team helping us, from a company who has benefited from using FreeBSD. They have offered their services to help us better market ourselves for fundraising purposes. They looked at the project's website and said it was confusing on how to donate. They also said there was no correlation between donating and clicking on the foundation button. A person looking to donate might not know what the foundation link means. They had suggested to either add a "Donate to the Foundation" or "Keep FreeBSD Free" button in a prominent spot on each page of the project. That would also create a connection between the two entities. Especially, since our whole mission is to support the project. We are going to add a section on our website that answers the questions: Why is FreeBSD free? or Why do we want to keep FreeBSD free? Why is this so important? What happens if FreeBSD isn't free? What happens if it goes away? This will then tie into why donate to the foundation. We would love to have both, the donate button and the foundation link. But, if we had a choice of only one, I'd choose a donate button that linked to our donate page. Thank You, Deb Goodkin The FreeBSD Foundation Murray Stokely wrote: > On 11/19/07, Michael W. I don't think we should change the navbar to say "Donate", because you have a donate link on the upper right already and that would be confusing. But, what I'm hoping is that you'd add this button we're talking about, either to the header or somewhere on the top right of each page. Or, at a minimum on the homepage. Adding it to the top makes it more significant. On the bottom, people might not even see it. And, it just seems like it would be less effective there. We have our donate button in our header, so it shows up on every page. > > There could also be additional places to add links ot the foundation, > such as in the Newbies page linked from the main page. Such PRs are closed very slowly. And there is a working utility that can be used by users. So if new users will try following handbook they will fail for sure. Why not have cdrecord recommended to users so that they aren't exposed to bugs? And still fix burncd when possible. OS should just work out of the box. Like Apple OS pretty much just works w/out exposing users to any major problems. FreeBSD should be the same. That might be your opinion indeed, if it takes too long for you, please feel free to submit patches or help us getting those improvements in, then but only then it can speed up, please keep in mind that we are all volunteers and that we also have different things to do beyond looking into bug reports all day ("sad but true") > > And there is a working utility that can be used by users. > > So if new users will try following handbook they will fail for sure. Why not > have cdrecord recommended to users so that they aren't exposed to bugs? And > still fix burncd when possible. You are incorrect; they will not fail for surei some combinations might not work properly, and people that face those issues are invited to report their problems. Nobody is helped when we push an alternative package that is known by most people already (as a matter of fact it's already mentioned on the page so I think that people will have a look nevertheless for alternative packages if they want a quick fix, I really dont see a reason to push that even more in the handbook, while we want to drive a different road). > > OS should just work out of the box. We dont have that, we mostly dont get payed for the things we do, we dont mind that, but since that is the case we cannot guarantee that everything will always work as people could/would expect. IF there are problems in some region and you would like to get that resolved consider funding an developer to make it happen.
