The mfi(4) controller supports the PERC 5/i and PERC 6/i controllers in 2950 machines just fine in stock FreeBSD 6.x and 7.x. If Statseeker is bundling a version of FreeBSD though it depends on what OS version Statseeker is using and what sort of kernel configuration it is using and you will need to take this up with the Statseeker folks. It looks like Statseeker 2.8.3 is based on 6.2 so should support the PERC5/i adapter just fine. Newer 2950's have a PERC6/i controller which is not supported by 6.2 and requires the latest mfi(4) driver from 6.3. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 26 16:50:02 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE5EE1065673 for ; Wed, 26 Mar 2008 16:50:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A475E8FC1A for ; Wed, 26 Mar 2008 16:50:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m2QGo2Oa008409 for ; Wed, 26 Mar 2008 16:50:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m2QGo2vt008408; Wed, 26 Mar 2008 16:50:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2008 16:50:02 GMT Message-Id: <200803261650.m2QGo2vt008408@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org From: John Baldwin Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/122115: Require driver for SCSI controller in Dell PowerEdge 2950 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: John Baldwin List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2008 16:50:02 -0000 The following reply was made to PR amd64/122115; it has been noted by GNATS. - The pciconf -l output (I think grep ^none would be enough; if it was probed as mpt(4) then we will need to know what problem it reported) There are a lot of improvements in recent FreeBSD releases. I have some Dell 1950 boxes running and it uses: mpt0@pci0:1:0:0: class=0x010000 card=0x1f101028 chip=0x00581000 rev=0x08 hdr=0x00 And works just fine. It would be good if we can know more details (i.e. release you are using, the hardware, etc) so we will be able to figure out a better solution. Create a raidz 2. Degrade one drive in the raidz 3. Replace with another drive attached to the same channel so that the replacement drive comes up as the same identifier (i.e. dead drive is /dev/ad6 and new drive comes up as /dev/ad6) 4. Attempt to issue replace command. >Fix: Move the replacement drive such that its identifier is something other than the one of the dead drive and ZFS will complete rebuilding the array. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 28 02:25:22 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ECA43106564A; Fri, 28 Mar 2008 02:25:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost1.sentex.ca (smarthost1.sentex.ca [64.7.153.18]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BAC448FC14; Fri, 28 Mar 2008 02:25:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp1.sentex.ca (smtp1c.sentex.ca [64.7.153.10]) by smarthost1.sentex.ca (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m2S2PL6t002878; Thu, 27 Mar 2008 22:25:21 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp1.sentex.ca (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m2S2PLU7096666; Thu, 27 Mar 2008 22:25:21 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id AD24B73039; Thu, 27 Mar 2008 21:25:21 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20080328022521.AD24B73039@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 21:25:21 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.92, clamav-milter version 0.92 on clamscanner1 X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on amd64/amd64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2008 02:25:23 -0000 TB --- 2008-03-28 00:55:00 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2008-03-28 00:55:00 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for amd64/amd64 TB --- 2008-03-28 00:55:00 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2008-03-28 00:55:52 - cvsupping the source tree TB --- 2008-03-28 00:55:52 - /usr/bin/csup -r 3 -g -L 1 -h localhost -s /tinderbox/HEAD/amd64/amd64/supfile TB --- 2008-03-28 00:56:01 - building world (CFLAGS=-O -pipe) TB --- 2008-03-28 00:56:01 - cd /src TB --- 2008-03-28 00:56:01 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Fri Mar 28 00:56:03 UTC 2008 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything >>> stage 5.1: building 32 bit shim libraries >>> World build completed on Fri Mar 28 02:22:24 UTC 2008 TB --- 2008-03-28 02:22:24 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2008-03-28 02:22:24 - cd /src/sys/amd64/conf TB --- 2008-03-28 02:22:24 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2008-03-28 02:22:24 - building LINT kernel (COPTFLAGS=) TB --- 2008-03-28 02:22:24 - cd /src TB --- 2008-03-28 02:22:24 - /usr/bin/make -B buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Fri Mar 28 02:22:24 UTC 2008 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies [...] ln -sf /obj/amd64/src/sys/LINT/opt_apic.h opt_apic.h cc -c -O -pipe -DCOMPAT_IA32 -DCOMPAT_LINUX32 -Werror -D_KERNEL -DKLD_MODULE -std=c99 -nostdinc -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -include /obj/amd64/src/sys/LINT/opt_global.h -I. -I@ -I@/contrib/altq -finline-limit=8000 --param inline-unit-growth=100 --param large-function-growth=1000 -fno-omit-frame-pointer -I/obj/amd64/src/sys/LINT -mcmodel=kernel -mno-red-zone -mfpmath=387 -mno-sse -mno-sse2 -mno-mmx -mno-3dnow -msoft-float -fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables -ffreestanding -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -Wundef -Wno-pointer-sign -fformat-extensions @/amd64/amd64/genassym.c cc1: warnings being treated as errors In file included from @/amd64/amd64/genassym.c:45: @/sys/buf.h: In function '_BUF_LOCK': @/sys/buf.h:279: warning: passing argument 7 of '_lockmgr_args' discards qualifiers from pointer target type @/sys/buf.h: In function '_BUF_TIMELOCK': @/sys/buf.h:297: warning: passing argument 7 of '_lockmgr_args' discards qualifiers from pointer target type *** Error code 1 Stop in /src/sys/modules/linux. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src/sys/modules. *** Error code 1 Stop in /obj/amd64/src/sys/LINT. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. Depends on what you mean by "support". It should work now using the vga/svga driver, in vga/svga modes. It should work now using the nv driver that's part of 7.3, which claims to support the GeForce 7xxxx boards, but you've got one with a really odd bus (HyperTransport???), which means I'm in over my head, but no one else has answered. That could mean anything from "the nv driver will work if you turn off the parts that HTX specific" to "your card won't be support until someone writes the HTX bus driver for FreeBSD" (since the nvidia driver supports it on i386, it shouldn't be that bad) - but in any case you get at best 2d acceleration. The 64-bit binary driver from nvidia need kernel support, and reports are it's being worked on, but adding support for a binary driver is a political issue, but that's the only option that gets full 3d-support. Your best course of action depends on what you want. Possibilities include patching the FreeBSD kernel to make the nvidia folks happy, trying to use a 32-bit X11 server so you can use the nvidia binary driver, trying to get the nv driver working, and getting a video card that's already supported. http://www.mired.org/consulting.html Independent Network/Unix/Perforce consultant, email for more information. Out of interest, what sort of ATI card did you get, and how well does it go with Xorg's driver? I'm coming to the conclusion that replacing my GeForce 6600LE card is the only way I'm going to get something better than the vesa driver. I'm doing firmware development management for the blade management controller on the board, a Faraday KIRA100. Last year, I worked on the team that built firmware for the Chassis Management Controller for the system. We have a blade we're building which has 4 Barcelona 8000's and 24 DIMM slots and 4 mezzanine card slots which can hold either ethernet or iSCSI Lan on Motherboard chips (7508's, these are Broadcom, I think). The M1000e will carry 8 of these or 16 of the simpler 2S AMD or Intel blades. I'd LOVE to get this beastie running Beastie, if you know what I mean. This can't be a front-burner effort for me for a lot of reasons, but I'd really appreciate your help in making it happen. It seems to me that having FreeBSD working on such bleeding edge hardware leads to more high-end sales for Dell and more FreeBSD in High Places. Win - Win! I'm d/l the ISO's to play with. I have FreeBSD 7-STABLE running on my old Inspiron Celeron laptop, and I'm competent to tweak kernel files and all the usual FreeBSD stuff. I do program in C and Perl and whatnot, but I'm not a kernel committer. ;-D The usual disclaimers: all opinions expressed herein are my own, not Dell's, etc.,etc.,etc. YMMV! :D -- Don Wilde From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 29 12:17:40 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F21641065670 for ; Sat, 29 Mar 2008 12:17:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joao@matik.com.br) Received: from msrv.matik.com.br (msrv.matik.com.br [200.152.83.14]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5EC8A8FC1F for ; Sat, 29 Mar 2008 12:17:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joao@matik.com.br) Received: from nbc.matik.com.br (nbc.matik.com.br [200.152.88.34] (may be forged)) by msrv.matik.com.br (8.14.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id m2TCHdxP018342; Sat, 29 Mar 2008 09:17:39 -0300 (BRT) (envelope-from joao@matik.com.br) From: JoaoBR Organization: Infomatik To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org, dwilde1@gmail.com Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2008 09:17:10 -0300 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.9 References: In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200803290917.10348.joao@matik.com.br> X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.91.2, clamav-milter version 0.91.2 on msrv.matik.com.br X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: Re: a fun project X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2008 12:17:41 -0000 On Saturday 29 March 2008 06:05:49 Don Wilde wrote: > FreeBSD working on such bleeding edge hardware leads to more high-end sal= es > for Dell and more FreeBSD in High Places. I just want multiple large, stable displays. Because of that, I do tend to by cheaper (which mostly means older) cards, which have had more time for the OSS developers to get working properly. http://www.mired.org/consulting.html Independent Network/Unix/Perforce consultant, email for more information.
