However, a user informed me that the patch makes Ekiga to use only dsp0. According to sound(4), one should not directly use specific=20 sound device (i.e., dspX nor dsp). Since I'm not familiar with the sound(4) framework. Can someone who is familiar with sound(4) shed us some lights? I have a recent Thinkpad T61 running amd64 7-STABLE, and grepping dmesg reveals that the sound system is detected as an Intel 82801H, and the codec used is announced as Analog Devices AD1984. I've made the following entries: /boot/loader.conf snd_hda_load="YES" /boot/devices.hints hint.pcm.0.config="gpio0 gpio1 gpio2 gpio3 gpio4 gpio5 gpio6 gpio7" I've tried many variations on the above hint line, with no difference in results. That is, while the sound now works in some fashion, I'm not getting desired output from the built-in speakers - it just sounds like it's coming from a long way away - I can barely make it out. I've manually located the sound as coming from the speakers, and adjusting the software sliders makes it no louder, though I can silence the sound with them. What else should I be trying to get this working? Note that fluidsynth requires root permissions to set high priority scheduling, but I doubt that's the problem you describe. Regards, Luc. The patch I have submitted to the code in SVN of ptlib/plugins/sound_oss/sound_oss.cxx is: #if defined P_FREEBSD // in FreeBSD the file name should be used via the // devfs(5) and // is just "/dev/dsp0" and devfs(5) takes care of virtual // channels, // like /dev/dsp0.0 /dev/dsp0.1 ... // everything else would conflict with other KDE apps // using the // audio devname = devdir + "dsp0"; PTRACE(1, "OSS\tCollectSoundDevices FreeBSD devname set to devfs(5) name:" << devname ); #endif and the man page of sound(4) says: ... The above device nodes are only created on demand through the dynamic devfs(5) clone handler. Users are strongly discouraged to access them directly. For specific sound card access, please instead use /dev/dsp or /dev/dsp%d. ^^^^^^^^^^ and it works fine with KDE sharing sound with all othe applications; what is wrong with /dev/dsp0? There may be more than one soundcard in the system. By accessing dsp0, =20 you hardcode the first detected soundcard. This may be not desired by =20 the user. Either provide the possibility to specify a sound device, or use =20 '/dev/dsp', as this allows the user to set the default soundcard. The system detects the 4 chips on the card. In the same machine i also have a single chip linuxmedialabs card which works good for over a year. The 4 chips are detected as /dev/bktr0 - > /dev/bktr3, and the lml (previously /dev/bktr0) now as /dev/bktr4 My question is that whether i have a foundamental problem with the card or should i keep trying. I read Mark has a patch for those cards. I will definately try this patch. The kodicom 4400 has 4 Brooktree capture chips, a transparent PCI bridge and a video crossbar. The patch programs the crossbar so you can route the video signal from one of the 16 inputs to a particular capture chip. many versions of this card has 4 BNC video inputs, they are crossbar inputs 0-3. Additionally there is also set of riser pins for all 16 inputs. The patch intially programs the crossbar so input 0 goes to the first capture chip, etc. once the input is selected, use any bktr-aware capture program. --Mark.
