These lines aren't children of the devices, and so their interrupts are not associated with them by the regular probes. Is the correct way to handle this: a) Reaching out across the OF tree for the GPU line, looking up its interrupt, then having the device assign it to itself in device_attach()? In the case of SMU (and the onboard audio in G5-era machines), we actually need to use GPIO pins for data transfer, and we should probably have a generic mechanism for this. Without knowledge in a generic GPIO driver that some interrupts belong to other devices, however, they will then be bound here and unavailable to PMU/SMU by other methods. b) Having a macgpio device like NetBSD has that collects these and forwards them to the appropriate handlers? This would involve the gpio device and remote interrupt handler knowing about one another. c) Remapping the interrupts in the bus probe with a quirks table like the way SCC interrupts are collated? SMU, unlike PMU, is not a child of macio, so we would need several versions of this quirk. This sounds like the worst choice. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Apr 9 06:44:54 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0129E106564A for ; Wed, 9 Apr 2008 06:44:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Received: from azure.onthenet.com.au (azure.OntheNet.com.au [203.13.68.11]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AEF698FC24 for ; Wed, 9 Apr 2008 06:44:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (dommail.OntheNet.com.au [203.13.70.57]) by azure.onthenet.com.au (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F20B115C0; Wed, 9 Apr 2008 16:44:51 +1000 (EST) Received: from excfreebsd.hq.netapp.com (nat-198-95-226-228.netapp.com [198.95.226.228]) by dommail.onthenet.com.au (MOS 3.7.5a-GA) with ESMTP id DUS45301 (AUTH peterg@ptree32.com.au); Wed, 9 Apr 2008 16:44:49 +1000 (EST) Message-ID: <47FC65AF.4080409@freebsd.org> Date: Tue, 08 Apr 2008 23:43:59 -0700 From: Peter Grehan User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.0 (X11/20070525) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Nathan Whitehorn References: <47F3D2BC.7060001@uchicago.edu> <47F422A0.9080907@uchicago.edu> <47F4E007.90802@uchicago.edu> <3B02E59E-5399-40B6-9747-2F49200FD708@mac.com> <47F59C13.9030705@uchicago.edu> <20080404061224.GB11845@FreeBSD.org> <47FC0F9B.6070902@uchicago.edu> <47FC30AF.2060204@uchicago.edu> In-Reply-To: <47FC30AF.2060204@uchicago.edu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: BMAC Ethernet Driver X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: grehan@freebsd.org List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 09 Apr 2008 06:44:54 -0000 Hi Nathan, > Apple PMU and SMU devices, probably among others, use macio gpio lines > for interrupts instead of the IRQs listed in the OF interrupts property. > These lines aren't children of the devices, and so their interrupts are > not associated with them by the regular probes. > > Is the correct way to handle this: ... > b) Having a macgpio device like NetBSD has that collects these and > forwards them to the appropriate handlers? This would get my vote. I would think the gpio device would register itself, perhaps with it's macio parent, and clients would access it through kobj methods. These would include interrupt forwarding, and GPIO toggling. How does the SMU use the GPIO's ? Just toggling ? > This would involve the gpio device and remote interrupt handler > knowing about one another. Hopefully it is a one-way path with the gpio device knowing nothing about the users that call it. later, Peter. The way I'm approaching it now is to have the interrupt infrastructure work with the second PIC, but it seems that we just need to make it a bit more generic: have the interrupt intrastructure work with multiple PICs, possibly nested. A gpio driver could register itself as a PIC and all it needs to do is implement the PIC KOBJ interface. I would think the gpio device would register itself, perhaps with it's macio parent, and clients would access it through kobj methods. These would include interrupt forwarding, and GPIO toggling. The trouble here is that SMU isn't a macio child, so it wouldn't pick up the GPIO kobj methods. > How does the SMU use the GPIO's ? Just toggling ? Yeah. Yes, I think that would be ideal. I'm not quite sure how to do it though. Having a second gpio driver for each device that attaches to macgpio and can find its partner by internal logic could work. Or global calls into macgpio. Also, is there a way to find a FreeBSD device given an OF phandle? For SMU, the GPIO lines it needs to care about are listed as device handles under /smu. So an SMU attachment would need to figure out the macgpio device and GPIO line to watch from the OF handle. In this case, the kobj methods wouldn't be part of the device hierarchy, but accessible directly through a device_t. Have a look at kern/subr_rtc.c for a similar case where a real-time clock device exports kobj methods via a registration and wrapper routines. > > How does the SMU use the GPIO's ? For macio devices, the methods could be exported by the parent. For non-macio devices, something like the subr_rtc.c style could be used. > Or global calls into macgpio.
