My bet is that your setup will work very well, but beware that there is no nVidia driver for amd64 yet, so you'll be stuck with either xorg-drivers-nv, a third party open source driver which for newer cards has no xv support (the only issue I have is that when watching video with an aspect ratio other than 1:1 it won't automatically rescale) and no 3D support for any cards, or the nouveau driver, another third party open source driver which is still highly experimental, but has some features that xorg-drivers-nv lacks (no 3D though). So, if you need 3D you should either install i386, which will also work well with your hardware, or wait for the amd64 proprietary nVidia driver. If you're not in too much of a hurry, I'd suggest the latter, because word has it the nVidia driver for amd64 is just around the corner. And then the 8.0-RELEASE will probably be out as well, and you won't have to go through an upgrade. It will be fine with the 3G RAM: amd64 can handle much more memory than ia32, but it doesn't need significantly more: program size and data size are usually fairly comparable. Depends a bit on the density of pointers and linked structures. Code and non-pointer data is essentially the same size. What *won't* be totally fine is the Nvidia graphics card. Nvidia provide a closed-source driver only for ia32, and the open-source drivers work so well that I switched to ATI on my amd64 desktop system (and have been happy ever since.) > I need my laptop for Programming, scientific calculations and heavy > mathematical stuff. So lack of whizzy 3D accelleration is probably not a big deal: you might get by with the nv (open source) driver. Languages, compilers and numerical libraries all work very nicely in amd64. Do you have the ability to capture the boot messages (either with a serial console, or with a digital camera)? If so, ccan you please boot with the "bootverbose" option from the menu, and once you're in the installer press scroll lock, page up, and take a picture of the screen? Then press page up again and take another picture, untly you've got the last 10 or so screens of text? Then please upload these somewhere and share a link to them? Thanks! This sounds like it could possibly be a hardware problem to me, especially as it has only recently started happening. Can you run (say) Memtest86 overnight on the machine to see if that finds any issues? If that finds nothing, can you please show an example of these corrupted headers, and also the differences seen between the image on disk and the corrupted image that is served? Lastly, you could try upgrading to 7.2 and seeing if that resolves your issue - especlially as 7.0-RELEASE is no longer supported. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=140876
