The basic plan is to have multiple tuners for DVB-T, DVB-S, UHF/VHF, DAB, and FM radio. Currently the region I live in only supports analog TV in Pal-II or Pal-B standard and analog radio. My thought was to run MythTV server on the system and not only allow for broadcasting over local network to HTPC's running at home but also use ZFS for a large storage solution for PVR and other video/music files. We're currently talking about 12-16TB once I convert from DVD and CD. Basically what I was wondering is the support for modern hardware. I know Hauppauge cards are pretty good and offer dual and/or quad tuner support and are PCI-E based. Would my project be feasible or would I need to look at Linux for the Server backend and create a separate storage server? Would be awsome if the support was readily available on FreeBSD...... Has anyone got any experience with this? Many thanks. Yes, ZFS. If it's in budget, try to duplicate it on another box at a friends house. Losing all that effort to one human/software error sucks. Even a crappy powered down raidz1 in a hole would do. For me, I need ATSC first, then ripping of YC/Composite + LR audio from legacy (LaserDisc) sources at >= DVD quality, then QAM. Are Hauppauge's build in MPEG2 encoders (+LR audio) of enough quality and bitrate to equal DVD (and CD-DA)? Would also like to play with ripping the full bandwidth raw ATSC-TS from the air and transcoding that if the MPEG2 wasn't good. Actually as it's primarily a Windows only base no one would run any UNIX system at home as they aren't very interested in it. Believe me I've tried!! I even created an OpenSolaris User Group out here which went belly-up after even my friends deserted me on the topic since they had no time for it and no money to buy equipment or the understanding as they did with MS....... Saaaad but true if not completely off topic. :-P Anyway, regards --K From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Dec 25 23:41:17 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 280341065673 for ; Sat, 25 Dec 2010 23:41:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dieterbsd@engineer.com) Received: from imr-db01.mx.aol.com (imr-db01.mx.aol.com [205.188.91.95]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DB5D28FC08 for ; Sat, 25 Dec 2010 23:41:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: from imo-ma04.mx.aol.com (imo-ma04.mx.aol.com [64.12.78.139]) by imr-db01.mx.aol.com (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id oBPNV07b003419 for ; Sat, 25 Dec 2010 18:31:00 -0500 Received: from dieterbsd@engineer.com by imo-ma04.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v42.9.) id n.c14.8baf979f (37530) for ; Sat, 25 Dec 2010 18:30:55 -0500 (EST) Received: from smtprly-me02.mx.aol.com (smtprly-me02.mx.aol.com [64.12.95.103]) by cia-mb01.mx.aol.com (v129.7) with ESMTP id MAILCIAMB013-b2c74d167eaede; Sat, 25 Dec 2010 18:30:55 -0500 Received: from web-mmc-m05 (web-mmc-m05.sim.aol.com [64.12.224.138]) by smtprly-me02.mx.aol.com (v129.5) with ESMTP id MAILSMTPRLYME023-b2c74d167eaede; Sat, 25 Dec 2010 18:30:54 -0500 To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Date: Sat, 25 Dec 2010 18:30:54 -0500 X-MB-Message-Source: WebUI X-AOL-IP: 67.206.163.150 X-MB-Message-Type: User MIME-Version: 1.0 From: dieterbsd@engineer.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed X-Mailer: Mail.com Webmail 33069-STANDARD Received: from 67.206.163.150 by web-mmc-m05.sysops.aol.com (64.12.224.138) with HTTP (WebMailUI); Sat, 25 Dec 2010 18:30:54 -0500 Message-Id: <8CD72A2E8E2D0F6-B84-15C61@web-mmc-m05.sysops.aol.com> X-Spam-Flag: NO X-AOL-SENDER: dieterbsd@engineer.com Subject: Re: FreeBSD support for modern TV tuners? I have the older HD-3000 card and the cx88 driver is better than the linux driver. http://corona.homeunix.net/cx88wiki/Overview/SupportedCards These require a slot per tuner, and PCI slots are going away. The HDHomerun doesn't need a slot or a device driver. It provides better info than most tuners. However word is that some other tuners get better reception. And it doesn't do analog TV or FM. > Would also like to play with ripping the full bandwidth raw ATSC-TS > from the air and transcoding that if the MPEG2 wasn't good. When recording ATSC-TS you can save disk space by filtering out the PIDs you don't need. I usually only save 2 PIDs (1 video, 1 audio). Some=20 tuners can filter PIDs for you, or you can do it after recording. What do you mean by "if the MPEG2 wasn't good"? Transcoding to a=20 different lossy format will lose quality. IIRC there are lossless formats out=20 there but I haven't tried them.
