I have (according to Xorg.0.log) Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) 965GM (it is ASUS laptop X80L). When acceleration is enabled, some parts of windows sometimes became garbled. It seems like parts of video memory is littered. Image is only restored when affected regions is completely redrawn, minimize-restore of window do not restore garbled region (but image inside garbled region become different, it become part of desktop or something like that). I tried to disable everything that use acceleration (disable composition in KDE, etc), even disable DRI but if acceleration is enabled in xorg.conf this bug remains. If I disable acceleration (with Option "Accel" "off") - everything works fine. I tried to play with various options in xorg.conf but there are not many options to play with. Driver just ignores a lot of options (such as VideoRam). I tried change AccelMethod, but only EXA works for me (XAA and UXA make Xorg halt on starting graphic mode, I just have blank black screen and everything stop, I cannot switch back to console or kill X server). Only completely disabling acceleration make things better. I use FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE, xorg 7.4, and intel video driver 2.7.1 (it is latest version currently present in ports). I'm not sure it is bug in xorg driver or in kernel support (i915 and drm modules, btw I mention these are not loaded if acceleration is disabled). It seems to me that it is some sort of memory allocation or access issue. Please advice possible solutions. BTW I think driver is severely outdated now. intellinuxgraphics.org have 2.11.0 now. I tried to download it but I cannot build it (I think it is for linux only and must be ported to FreeBSD). I believe Xorg 7.5 is available via ports, perhaps upgrading to the most recent version of both Xorg and the Intel driver (2.7.1_3) will remedy some of your issues. I will say that the overall quality of open-source Intel graphics drivers are highly fluctuating it seems. However, the Xorg setup on my Intel-equipped machines is running well, although I don't require extraordinary power. The FreeBSD "team" working on Xorg is rather short-handed, and can't be expected to keep up with the most current developments of either Xorg or the constituent pieces (like the Intel driver). Volunteers are always welcome... -Brandon From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 15 06:36:54 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63BEB1065672 for ; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 06:36:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bennett@cs.niu.edu) Received: from mp.cs.niu.edu (mp.cs.niu.edu [131.156.145.41]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2840B8FC16 for ; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 06:36:53 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mp.cs.niu.edu (bennett@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mp.cs.niu.edu (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id o5F5coaX011969 for ; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 00:38:50 -0500 (CDT) Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 00:38:50 -0500 (CDT) From: Scott Bennett Message-Id: <201006150538.o5F5covh011968@mp.cs.niu.edu> To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: xscreensaver-demo troubles since X.org 7.5 updates X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 06:36:54 -0000 Ever since the mass of updates to upgrade X.org from 7.4 to 7.5, I've been having troubles with the xscreensaver-demo application that is part of x11/xscreensaver. Prior to those updates, it would occasionally lose the ability to switch to screensaving mode and stay there until the trackball or keyboard got some activity, but it was a relatively infrequent occurrence. In order to avoid GPU crashes on my Mobility Radeon 9800 card that occur when certain screensaver modules are running, I just use the blank screen mode as the screensaver. The old problem that occurred once in a while went like this. If the keyboard were locked and whatever the problem's trigger was had already occurred, the keyboard would lock, but the passord panel would remain displayed. The password panel's vertical timeout bar would run down, the panel would vanish and instantly reappear. The screen would then have two lines of error messages displayed, beginning in the upper left corner, and would remain until I unlocked the screen by entering the password. The password panel would also continue to time out and repeat until the password were entered correctly and the screen unlocked. Since the updates, the errors happen very, very frequently. Further, when locking the screen, the password panel appears immediately. If I enter the password and try locking it again, it usually works on that second try. Once or twice it has taken a third try before locking with a blank screen. However, even when it seems to work correctly, if any movement of the trackball triggers the appearance of the password panel and I don't enter the password, the panel will eventually time out, vanish, and immediately reappear. This process continues to repeat until the password is entered and the screen is unlocked, just as described above for the situation in which the blank screen never truly appears when I attempt to lock the screen the first time. Exiting and restarting xscreensaver-demo manually corrects the situation temporarily for a seemingly random, but short, period of time. It does not appear to be necessary to kill and restart the xscreensaver daemon process, just the user interface xscreensaver-demo. I never know just how long after starting xscreensaver-demo it will be okay before failing. However, I can test it before leaving the machine unattended simply by clicking on the "Blank Screen Now" menu option. If the program is still okay, the screen will fade to black. If it is not okay, the screen will fade to black and then instantly go back to the normal, unblanked display. This at least allows me to test it without having to lock it and type in the password in order to find out whether the screen will remain black if I go away and leave it or lock it. If someone knows how to fix this or knows of some workaround for it, I'd be deeply grateful to know the secret. Thanks in advance for any help! Scott Bennett, Comm. Their newer drivers require certain things in kernel that are not available in FreeBSD, that's why we can't update the driver to any newer version. To add to what you said, currently _nobody_ actively works on kernel side of X support. -- Andriy Gapon From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 15 18:08:06 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D6CB2106566B for ; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 18:08:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93C708FC26 for ; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 18:08:06 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id o5FI84PH064877; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 12:08:04 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) with ESMTP id o5FI841J064874; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 12:08:04 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 12:08:04 -0600 (MDT) From: Warren Block To: Larry Gingras In-Reply-To: <4C16663C.8020603@cybent.net> Message-ID: References: <4C16663C.8020603@cybent.net> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.5 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Tue, 15 Jun 2010 12:08:04 -0600 (MDT) Cc: x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: intel video driver problem X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 18:08:06 -0000 On Tue, 15 Jun 2010, Larry Gingras wrote: > I have a problem with acceleration features on my graphic adapter. > I have (according to Xorg.0.log) Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) 965GM > (it is ASUS laptop X80L). > When acceleration is enabled, some parts of windows sometimes became garbled. > It seems like parts of video memory is littered. When X starts (doesn't matter how, xdm, startx, Xorg) the system just freezes. The external monitor lost its signal, network connections froze. Only option is hard reset. When it came back up Xorg.0.log was zero bytes. I have tried with/with out the docking station, with a new xorg.conf (created by Xorg -configure), disabling accel and dri. Same results. Anyone have any pointers on how to debug a video driver (I have already found [1] [2] but the more suggestions the better)? What do I need to recompile? Suggested compiler flags? Suggested locations for break points while I try to step my way through the driver? Any help appreciated. Beyond that limit, files will be polled. If you often open several large folders with Nautilus, you might want to increase the kern.maxfiles tunable (you do not need to set kern.maxfilesperproc, since it is computed at boot time from kern.maxfiles). For a typical desktop, add the following line to /boot/loader.conf, then reboot the system: kern.maxfiles=3D"25000" The behavior of gamin can be controlled via the various gaminrc files. See http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/config.html on how to create these files. So I edited i830_display.c and commented out the loop, recompiled/reinstalled the driver and it works... ugly as hell but it works. > Why is another question > all together. On stderr there are scaring warnings like: (Pidgin:20448): Pango-WARNING **: font_face status is: out of memory (Pidgin:20448): Pango-WARNING **: scaled_font status is: out of memory (Pidgin:20448): Pango-WARNING **: shaping failure, expect ugly output. shape-engine='BasicEngineFc', font='DejaVu Sans Bold 12', text='....' I even tried moving the user's home directory aside and making her login afresh -- but the problem persisted, so it is not related to the user-settings. I even did `portupgrade -aRr' and still have the problem. Any ideas? If that is correct then I have a work around. I won't call the attached patch a fix, because to fix a problem you have to first understand what the problem is and I don't. What this does is avoid the problem. My graphics card is a Matrox Millenium II and it worked just fine with the mga video diver. The mga driver seems to have gone away and the Xorg server insists that I use the vesa driver. The vesa driver does not seem to recognize any video modes with resolution greater than 1024x768 which is just not acceptable for general use. The only obvious documentation for the vesa driver, the "vesa" man page, does not list the acceptable video modes or suggest where such a list might be found. The Xorg.0.log file it produces lists a bunch of "DDC gathered Modelines" such as: (II) VESA(0): Modeline "1152x864"x0.0 108.00 1152 1216 1344 1600 864 865 868 900 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz) (II) VESA(0): Modeline "1600x1200"x0.0 175.50 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1 204 1250 +hsync +vsync (81.2 kHz) (II) VESA(0): Modeline "1600x1200"x0.0 162.00 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1 204 1250 +hsync +vsync (75.0 kHz) (II) VESA(0): Modeline "1280x1024"x0.0 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1 028 1066 +hsync +vsync (80.0 kHz) but when I try to use one of these modes the driver claims that there is no such mode, for exaple: (II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1152x864" (no mode of this name) and it seems that the driver simply ignores any modes that I define. I guess that is a vesa thing. Are there any VESA modes with useful resolutions? Is there any way to get the old mga driver back? The port builds ok but will not install because some other driver that it depends on is broken.
