If it happens that 9.0 installs into /compat, we should either add this to the documentation or file a PR so that either the linux_base package or bsdinstall creates the link. But from the current PR it seems the OP was using 8.2-RELEASE which should not exhibit this. Fortunately I speak fluent 'C', so I often end up diving into the source code in order to find out what's really going on. But I'm currently in the mood to do something more positive about it. But how? I'm not talking about fixing typos here; I'm referring to large chunks of information that are simply missing. For example, 'top' does so much more than the current documentation suggests. If someone would be good enough to tell me how, I'm volunteering to update the man pages as I go. For the avoidance of doubt, I don't want to know how to create a man page, I want to know how to submit updated man pages for eventual inclusion in the next release. Thanks, Frank. The process is quite simple. Just make the changes and then submit bug reports containing unified diffs of the changes in using send-pr(1). If the program or API has been changed recently you might send a copy of the PR to the person who made the change since they will likely be happy to stop feeling guilty about not documenting it in the first place. You might also ask on freebsd-doc if you don't get a fairly quick response and someone there can help (src committers can too, but you may get better review from doc committers). If you submit too many of them you will likely end up being offered a commit bit to save the poor doc committer some work. -- Brooks --huq684BweRXVnRxX Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFO39PGXY6L6fI4GtQRAldjAJ9CZimq4im7YTGgqOKC4JKXSsSM/QCfYBfb NGhxzozf7txHiKk15ebQPeA= =W5dS -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --huq684BweRXVnRxX-- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 7 21:16:06 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 894C7106564A for ; Wed, 7 Dec 2011 21:16:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bcr@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mxout1.bln1.prohost.de (mxout1.bln1.prohost.de [213.160.84.47]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 192288FC08 for ; Wed, 7 Dec 2011 21:16:05 +0000 (UTC) Received: from Benedicts-Macbook-Pro.local (p4FC71AC3.dip.t-dialin.net [79.199.26.195]) (authenticated bits=0) by mx1.bln1.prohost.de (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id pB7LFvQV022216 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO) for ; Wed, 7 Dec 2011 22:15:58 +0100 Message-ID: <4EDFD794.3070102@FreeBSD.org> Date: Wed, 07 Dec 2011 22:16:04 +0100 From: Benedict Reuschling Organization: The FreeBSD Project User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:8.0) Gecko/20111105 Thunderbird/8.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org References: <4EDFCB27.3030803@fjl.co.uk> In-Reply-To: <4EDFCB27.3030803@fjl.co.uk> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.3.3 OpenPGP: id=4A819348 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Null-Tag: 64a31e7e7e918a68a85d595f6e98c99f Cc: Subject: Re: The state of some of the man pages X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: bcr@FreeBSD.org List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 07 Dec 2011 21:16:06 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Am 07.12.11 21:23, schrieb Frank Leonhardt: > I've been moved to join this list because some of the man pages are > driving me crazy; they're out of date. > > Fortunately I speak fluent 'C', so I often end up diving into the source > code in order to find out what's really going on. Hello Frank, thanks for your offer to help. You can send bug reports containing unified diffs (against HEAD sources) to our problem report database. You can find it on the FreeBSD.org website under Support, Submit Bug-report or via this direct link: http://www.freebsd.org/send-pr.html Fill out the fields with as much information as possible as this will more likely draw someone's attention. Before you submit anything though, check whether the problem hasn't been reported yet by searching our bug database: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?query If there is a PR already covering your problem, you can submit a follow-up with a patch attached to bring the issue forward. Feel free to ask if anything is not clear. This way they will be registered in our "problem report database (GNATS) and won't get lost. A committer will then check them and (if they are fine) commit them. This way they will be included in the next release. For more information on how to create/send PR (problem reports) please read the article "Writing FreeBSD Problem Reports" under http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/problem-reports/index.html and maybe "Problem Report Handling Guidelines" for some technical information. FreeBSD does indeed have a backlog. To some extent this is because it's more fun to create new things than to fix bugs. But you can browse the existing PRs: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?query resulting in e.g.: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?category=docs It's sorted old-to-new, so starting at the bottom is probably better. Note the ones in green have already been committed, and are awaiting merge to all useful FreeBSD branches. (In some cases this has already been done.) If you want to see a prototype of another way of looking at the above but classified by manpage reference: http://people.freebsd.org/~linimon/studies/prs/pr_manpage_index.html It uses some grep magic over the Synopses in the docs PRs, so it is probably missing some. As PRs come in we try to canonicalize the Synopses but we miss some. We're always looking for fresh energy to help work on the FreeBSD documentation (as well as many other areas). Don't be daunted by the fact that there is a backlog -- just look at it as an opportunity to be able to have a big impact :-) mcl From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 8 08:50:11 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C2EB11065678 for ; If /compat/linux is the official path, then the default linprocfs mountpoint should be /compat/linux/proc (that is what I always use). Just like the default home dir is /home/, not /usr/home/. /compat could just as easily be a different filesystem or a symlink to somewhere else. So I do think the Handbook should be updated regardless. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 8 17:41:07 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B01C2106566B; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 17:41:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@FreeBSD.org) Received: from cyrus.watson.org (cyrus.watson.org [65.122.17.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7046E8FC17; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 17:41:07 +0000 (UTC) Received: from bigwig.baldwin.cx (bigwig.baldwin.cx [96.47.65.170]) by cyrus.watson.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id E645B46B37; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 12:41:06 -0500 (EST) Received: from John-Baldwins-MacBook-Air.local (c-68-36-150-83.hsd1.nj.comcast.net [68.36.150.83]) by bigwig.baldwin.cx (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 651C1B91E; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 12:41:06 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <4EE0F6B2.8090005@FreeBSD.org> Date: Thu, 08 Dec 2011 12:41:06 -0500 From: John Baldwin User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:8.0) Gecko/20111105 Thunderbird/8.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Manolis Kiagias References: <201112071830.pB7IUEHQ082055@freefall.freebsd.org> In-Reply-To: <201112071830.pB7IUEHQ082055@freefall.freebsd.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Greylist: Sender succeeded SMTP AUTH, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.7 (bigwig.baldwin.cx); Thu, 08 Dec 2011 12:41:06 -0500 (EST) Cc: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, Nathan Whitehorn Subject: Re: docs/163102: linprocfs mounted in wrong location in Handbook X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 08 Dec 2011 17:41:07 -0000 On 12/7/11 1:30 PM, Manolis Kiagias wrote: > The following reply was made to PR docs/163102; it has been noted by GNATS. > > From: Manolis Kiagias > To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, bug-followup@FreeBSD.org > Cc: VoidChicken@gmail.com > Subject: Re: docs/163102: linprocfs mounted in wrong location in Handbook > Date: Wed, 07 Dec 2011 20:26:21 +0200 > > On 7/12/2011 7:20 ìì, Patrick Lamaiziere wrote: > > The following reply was made to PR docs/163102; it has been noted by GNATS. > > > > From: Patrick Lamaiziere > > To: bug-followup@freebsd.org > > Cc: Kevin Baxter > > Subject: Re: docs/163102: linprocfs mounted in wrong location in Handbook > > Date: Wed, 7 Dec 2011 18:02:34 +0100 > > > > Le Wed, 7 Dec 2011 15:30:15 GMT, > > Kevin Baxter a écrit : > > > > > $ ls /usr/compat > > > ls: /usr/compat: No such file or directory > > > $ ls -ld /compat > > > drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 3 Jan 17 2010 compat > > > > > > It isn't a symlink on my system. I'll check on > a clean 9.0-RC3 install shortly and report findings. sysinstall did this in its magic installFixupBase() routine as bogon #4. I've no idea if bsdinstall replicates all the same post-install fixups. Hmm, my fresh 9.0 system has no /compat or /usr/compat, so this seems to be missing. I think the package should keep installing to /compat, but I don't really think the package should set the policy of symlinking /compat to /usr/compat. That should be in the install if /compat doesn't already exist. FWIW, for my own home-rolled installer on 8 I use the following shell function to simulate installFixupBase() (note, the installed system is mounted at /mnt, and this runs from the "outside" not in a chroot into /mnt): # Fixups from installFixupBase() in sysinstall's install.c install_fixups() { chmod 0755 /mnt/etc mkdir -p /mnt/var/db touch /mnt/var/db/mountdtab chmod 0644 /mnt/var/db/mountdtab mkdir /mnt/usr/compat ln -s usr/compat /mnt/compat chroot /mnt /bin/sh -c newaliases mtree -deU -f /mnt/etc/mtree/BSD.root.dist -p /mnt mtree -deU -f /mnt/etc/mtree/BSD.var.dist -p /mnt/var mtree -deU -f /mnt/etc/mtree/BSD.usr.dist -p /mnt/usr } -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 8 18:42:07 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C64C31065670 for ; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 18:42:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from sonic2000gr@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ww0-f42.google.com (mail-ww0-f42.google.com [74.125.82.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B1D08FC14 for ; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 18:42:06 +0000 (UTC) Received: by wgbds13 with SMTP id ds13so1751607wgb.1 for ; Thu, 08 Dec 2011 10:42:06 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject :references:in-reply-to:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=kBwb2DhcDpFBPz+/loFjzyRtRLl6JP0WT+9Xaq8RNBM=; b=FmZfDqHHUfWyE0g32+czwAdhggF87g4tKhVGcOfbw9AhzNVTDMtgy/W8YMzo1XaD4p BaaqdcHbhuH8vYIJA2IOiNRVL+aCEPwPjD/QkPe9OLItsr1Oh4Q9BlGXdYtuIW6qP+fk yDkIMDUrDshIblYsZdr8JKY8z55COogLABnac= Received: by 10.180.106.104 with SMTP id gt8mr7601445wib.6.1323369725968; Thu, 08 Dec 2011 10:42:05 -0800 (PST) Received: from [192.168.0.150] (athedsl-4364788.home.otenet.gr. You are right about /compat, in fact the linuxemu chapter uses this and not /usr/compat. There were only four instances in the Handbook where the user was asked explicitly to use /usr/compat and all were fixed. I would drop mention of sysinstall(8), and maybe add a note to say that /compat is typically a symlink to /usr/compat (though that will not be true on a 9.0 machine). I guess it was left out of bsdinstall due to the one big / layout, but for users who use a custom layout (e.g. myself, I don't like one big /), it might be nice if bsdinstall did this rather than forcing users to have to remember this detail. Does bsdinstall always make /home a symlink to /usr/home to support custom layouts? If so, it should apply the same logic to /compat. It might be nice if it could "notice" that /usr is separate and auto-create /compat and /home links in that case if it is currently doing nothing for /home. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 8 20:56:34 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD395106564A; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 20:56:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from sonic2000gr@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ey0-f182.google.com (mail-ey0-f182.google.com [209.85.215.182]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D40138FC19; Thu, 8 Dec 2011 20:56:33 +0000 (UTC) Received: by eaai12 with SMTP id i12so1770151eaa.13 for ; Thu, 08 Dec 2011 12:56:33 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject :references:in-reply-to:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=2NKru2Fs7Tf2J68Pk6jp7UQ85yl7DXJfw+VqJwsENUw=; b=gaXv1mUii3J5VrITXshx4BE8HgpdUB7zOTcYNgXqfilijBLMzHqg9w0nljhzCoXh7H qwJ3d3j6TppiOuxK1tOyIIWH9mQx6Eu48DGm9eT1QiMCkQNK2i3y+Wsn46FRQPPaLPee burK2GfVM4u23wVOHMxUARwRoyoq0Yse0XRgk= Received: by 10.213.9.134 with SMTP id l6mr332327ebl.57.1323377792949; Thu, 08 Dec 2011 12:56:32 -0800 (PST) Received: from [192.168.0.150] (athedsl-4364788.home.otenet.gr. Probably correct, for users opting to go with the traditional partitioning scheme, / may prove to be too small when linux_base gets installed. It would be best if bsdinstall creates the link for /compat. > Does bsdinstall always make > /home a symlink to /usr/home to support custom layouts? If so, it > should apply the same logic to /compat. It might be nice if it could > "notice" that /usr is separate and auto-create /compat and /home links > in that case if it is currently doing nothing for /home. > As a matter of fact, bsdinstall will not create /home at all if you don't create a user during install. But if you opt to create a user, adduser(8) is called and it actually creates both /usr/home and the /home link. But as with the recent settings and even with SVN_UPDATE set to YES in make.conf a simply "make update" typed in /usr/src will fail with a "svn not found" error, since the path to svn hasn't been properly set. The file /usr/src/Makefile.inc1 reveals that there are to flags that could be set to target mainance via svn: SVN itself targetting the path to the svn binary and SVNFLAGS setting for the repository to be targeted. None of them are mentioned in make.conf(5) and I'd like to see some notes in make.conf(5) on that. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Dec 10 15:54:51 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CAB8C106564A for ; Sat, 10 Dec 2011 15:54:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from stb@lassitu.de) Received: from gilb.zs64.net (gilb.zs64.net [IPv6:2001:470:1f0b:105e::1ea]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 96AD58FC0C for ; Sat, 10 Dec 2011 15:54:51 +0000 (UTC) Received: by gilb.zs64.net (Postfix, from stb@lassitu.de) id EAD4AE2444 for ; Sat, 10 Dec 2011 16:54:49 +0100 (CET) From: Stefan Bethke Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2011 16:54:49 +0100 Message-Id: <2A744D0D-626D-45E6-BD47-EC4A9A064713@lassitu.de> To: freebsd-doc Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v1251.1) X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.1251.1) Subject: Extending I2C man pages X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2011 15:54:51 -0000 I would appreciate if someone could review the following patch: http://www.lassitu.de/freebsd/iic-man-page-additions.patch It includes updated man pages for iicbb.4 and iicbus.4, and new man = pages for gpioiic.4, iicbb.9, iicbus.9, and iicbus_request_bus.9.
