I'm unable to get the "intel" driver to work. The "vesa" driver works, but I would like the "intel" driver to work. I don't run dbus or hal. The details and log files are at: http://www.eskimo.com/~joji/thinkpad_t60/thinkpad_t60_uname-a.txt http://www.eskimo.com/~joji/thinkpad_t60/thinkpad_t60_pciconf-lv.txt http://www.eskimo.com/~joji/thinkpad_t60/thinkpad_t60_dmesg.txt http://www.eskimo.com/~joji/thinkpad_t60/Xorg.0.log http://www.eskimo.com/~joji/thinkpad_t60/xorg.conf Is there anybody on this list with a similar laptop that have gotten the "intel" xorg driver to work? Yes, I first tried without an xorg.conf file (autogenerated). It did not work. Since I'm not using dbus and hal, I have to have an xorg.conf file to place the "AllowEmptyInput false" directive. I suspect there is an issue with the Intel driver with the 945GM graphics card. That suspicion can be put to rest if somebody else on the list actually has Xorg working with the xf86_video_intel driver. Once again, thanks for taking the time to respond. regards, joseph From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 5 00:58:51 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D352B1065672 for ; Wed, 5 Jan 2011 00:58:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 774AB8FC15 for ; Wed, 5 Jan 2011 00:58:51 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p050wdGG014651; Tue, 4 Jan 2011 17:58:39 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) with ESMTP id p050wdGe014648; Tue, 4 Jan 2011 17:58:39 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2011 17:58:39 -0700 (MST) From: Warren Block To: Joseph Olatt In-Reply-To: <20110104194750.GA20597@shell.eskimo.com> Message-ID: References: <20110104043645.GA12924@shell.eskimo.com> <201101040849.34263.milu@dat.pl> <20110104194750.GA20597@shell.eskimo.com> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.6 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Tue, 04 Jan 2011 17:58:39 -0700 (MST) Cc: Maciej Milewski , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Thinkpad T60 Xorg issues X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 05 Jan 2011 00:58:51 -0000 On Tue, 4 Jan 2011, Joseph Olatt wrote: > Yes, I first tried without an xorg.conf file (autogenerated). I removed 'AllowEmptyInput "false"' directive and added 'AutoAddDevices "Off"'. I'm still not able to get the xf86 intel driver to work. If I let Xorg autogenerate, I don't get a display. I get the following Xorg.0.log file: http://www.eskimo.com/~joji/thinkpad_t60/Xorg.0.log_auto It seems to be seg faulting at: (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "" (type: KEYBOARD) Segmentation fault: 11 at address 0x10 As mentioned before, I don't have hald or dbus running. Looks like the intel part is fine, it's the keyboard that's the problem. If you've built xorg-server without hal support, AutoAddDevices Off should not be needed. I installed x11/xorg-minimal. It is quite possible that x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard and x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse did not get installed. I suspect they are not listed as build-depends for x11/xorg-minimal. I don't have access to the laptop right now. I will check later tonight and report. I think you may have nailed the problem. I do have xf85-input-keyboard and -mouse installed. joji@peace> pkg_info | grep -E "(keyboard|mouse)" xf86-input-keyboard-1.4.0 X.Org keyboard input driver xf86-input-mouse-1.5.0 X.Org mouse input driver xkbcomp-1.1.0 Compile XKB keyboard description xkeyboard-config-1.8_1 X Keyboard Configuration Database So that wasn't the problem. Any other ideas? When I use the intel driver, I see the screen and the mouse pointer for a split second before it crashes. Run pkg_libchk from sysutils/bsdadminscripts to make sure something isn't missing. Run dbus and hal to see if it makes a difference. Rebuild xorg-server and drivers. Other than that... rebuild xorg-server with debug symbols, then crash it and get a backtrace. Will: cd /usr/ports/x11-servers/xorg-server make -D WITH_DEBUG install do the trick? Also, where does the core file show up for the xorg server? Trying various things, it turns out that the problem is between the xf86-video-intel driver and the awesome (x11-wm/awesome) manager. I had the following in my .xinitrc file: exec awesome This file did not have any problem with the xf86-video-vesa driver. But with the xf86-video-intel, it was causing Xorg to crash. I installed x11-wm/fluxbox and changed the .xinitrc file to contain exec fluxbox and the Xorg process does not crash now. So, it appears that there is a problem when the following combination is used: x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel + x11-wm/awesome I can live with x11-wm/fluxbox. But, I think there is a problem with xf86-video-intel on FreeBSD (when using the 945GM graphics chipset along with x11-wm/awesome). Since I have fluxbox working with xf86-video-intel, I'm on my way. When I get a chance I'll try to spend some more time with xf86-video-intel and x11-wm/awesome to see if we can make this work well on FreeBSD. Warren, Thanks very much for all the assistance you've provided. Next time I'm up in Rapid City, S. Dakota, I will buy you beer or lunch or both.
