Thanks in advance Since nobody else with more experience on that thing has turned up: There's rather little (Free)BSD specific about it: The E5 works as an independent router with a WLAN and an UMTS/3G interface, offers a DHCP server, NAT, as far as I know only vintage IPv4 but no IPv6, and runs as an independent device, including its own battery. Apparently it can be connected directly via USB, but I have never bothered to try, except to recharge the battery. Instead I only use it as a standalone device, and as such it works fine with me so far. It has one possibly annoying limitation: It can handle at most five clients at a time. Beyond that it is significantly more expensive than a USB UMTS/3G stick, but involves less fiddling around when on the road and lets one place it near windows or wherever to improve the signal while one is still free to move around in its vicinity. This stuff is just structural precursors to that. I'm just tidying up bits and pieces and including some updates from ath9k before I begin enabling the 802.11n hooks for others to play with. But I do actually have 802.11n working on FreeBSD at home, at least in station mode. Is it possible to have > something faster? Also, atheros extensions, such as fast frames and turbo > modes, not working ever. Any help is welcome. Eventually, yes. As I said before, I have a local tree with functioning, basic 11n HT/20 support. The driver needs further attention before we can enable HT modes and have the chipsets have even a remote hope of being stable and useful enough. There's also quite a bit missing from my "basic 11n HT/20 support" which doesn't even remotely work - eg legacy protection modes, making sure HT/40 channel protection works, broken A-MPDU support (which shouldn't be broken, that's another problem to fix) and rate control module stuff. It was just enough for me to verify that actual TX/RX of MCS rates worked (and it did, well enough.) If someone can help me source an AR9285 NIC then I can also work on that. Right now however, I'm just going to concentrate on the AR9160 and AR9220/AR9280 (same chipset, one being PCI and the other being PCIe.) As for turbo mode (and half/XR modes) and FF support - in ath9k, those are all "deprecated". If you have access to older chips (so AR5212/AR5213 and earlier) and would like to help debug this then please pipe up. Thanks. If someone can help me source an AR9285, I can add it to my list of things to test once I get the AR9280 support working. But that's predicated on getting the bugs worked out of the AR5212, AR5416 and AR9160 support. I'll post to -mobile once I've sorted out some of the kinks I'm seeing in the AR9280. I really need to first figure out exactly why the AR9280/AR9285 support is so unstable for people. There's one user who has reported a regression from if_ath in -8 to what's in HEAD. I'm working with him at the moment to nail down the cause(s). This is why I really do need this tested as much as possible. I'll put up instructions on how to build if_ath as a module (that's what I'm doing on my RELENG_8 EEEPC - I'm running the HEAD if_ath on it for testing on the AR9280) and then sort out any and all issues on the AR5416, AR9160, AR9280 and AR9285. Throwing 11n into the mix right now is just a bit too much for me to take on. :) Adrian From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 22 13:37:53 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E8C61106566B for ; Sat, 22 Jan 2011 13:37:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from onyx@z-up.ru) Received: from mx.z-up.ru (mx.z-up.ru [92.50.244.44]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9FBF38FC12 for ; Sat, 22 Jan 2011 13:37:53 +0000 (UTC) Received: from onyx_y550p.loc (unknown [92.50.244.254]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx.z-up.ru (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 680E41147D for ; Sat, 22 Jan 2011 16:37:32 +0300 (MSK) From: Dmitry Kolosov To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2011 16:37:49 +0300 User-Agent: KMail/1.13.5 (FreeBSD/8.2-PRERELEASE; KDE/4.5.5; i386; ; ) References: <741941295699995@web150.yandex.ru> In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <201101221637.50006.onyx@z-up.ru> Subject: Re: More if_ath churn coming your way! This I do know however: at boot, it associates much much faster. I used to have to wait at least 10 seconds for "the default route interface". Now, association and DHCP blazes through without pausing. Can you please verify this? Would you please let me know which version of the OS you were running before this? I haven't changed anything on the AR9285 codebase that would account for the above. Something to keep in mind with the AR9280/AR9285 support is that I've seen it be -very- unpredictable - sometimes it's reliable off the bat, sometimes it's not. You have to repeat it a few times to verify that you've actually seen a change. It dumps the contents of the atheros EEPROM into a text file for later analysis. I don't have any AR9285's handy; if you have an AR9285, would you please send me a hexdump of the EEPROM along with the contents of pciconf and dmesg | grep ath (so I can get the MAC/PHY version numbers?) Thanks, Adrian
