It was running a two years old 8-CURRENT and some days ago I decided to install it from scratch with 10-CURRENT (SVN r226986). I prepared the r226986 in some other machine and compiled the /usr/ports I'm used to use, put all this together on a bootable USB key, booted the EeePC with this, mounted its OB SSD as /mnt and installed over the system the usual way # make installworld DESTDIR=/mnt # make installkernel DESTDIR=/mnt ... ... After the EeePC came up with r226986, I installed the binary packages, created from the /usr/ports on the other machine too; and all is fine now: KDE-3.5.10 skype-2.1.0.81,1 pidgin-2.10.0 firefox-3.6.24,1 linux-f10-flashplugin-10.3r183.11 ... and a lot of more stuff (some 500 packages); even the onboard Videocam Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd. is now supported by cuse4bsd and webcamd-3.0.0.2 and works nicely in Skype (a big thanks to HPS for his great work on this!) snd_hda(4) detects nicely the onboard micro and speaker, as well as the pluged in headset micro/speaker; and Skype is using it via OSS; Just wanted to let you know this. I run patched 10-current on a new Lenovo Thinkpad X121e and yes, most thinks works fine, even webcam. The only thing that remains is to get microphone to work properly in Skype. (Video works great). Just a question, why do you run such old ports on top of a brand OS? I went straight for KDE-4.7.3 etc. On Tue, 13 Dec 2011, Matthias Apitz wrote: > > Hello, > > For some years now I own this netbook EeePC 900. Maybe your question is, why I use KDE3 and not KDE4? The EeePC has only a 900 MHz CPU and around 16 GByte disk. But even on my 'real' laptop I run KDE3. I think KDE4 does not provide better usability and in general hunts in the wrong direction. Most of my work I do in (x)terminals and I just need something to start other X11 applications. KDE3 fits my needs. matthias -- Matthias Apitz t +49-89-61308 351 - f +49-89-61308 399 - m +49-170-4527211 e - w http://www.unixarea.de/ UNIX since V7 on PDP-11 | UNIX on mainframe since ESER 1055 (IBM /370) UNIX on x86 since SVR4.2 UnixWare 2.1.2 | FreeBSD since 2.2.5 From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 14 14:32:50 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1312D106564A for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2011 14:32:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from stolpe@resilans.se) Received: from server.resilans.se (ns1.resilans.se [IPv6:2a01:280:1::53]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9D9228FC15 for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2011 14:32:49 +0000 (UTC) Received: from server.resilans.se (server.resilans.se [194.14.3.2]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by server.resilans.se (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E302C188580; Wed, 14 Dec 2011 15:32:48 +0100 (CET) Date: Wed, 14 Dec 2011 15:32:48 +0100 (CET) From: Daniel Stolpe To: Matthias Apitz In-Reply-To: <20111214141824.GA6470@tinyCurrent> Message-ID: References: <20111213111754.GA2492@tinyCurrent> <20111214141824.GA6470@tinyCurrent> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (LNX 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: MULTIPART/MIXED; BOUNDARY="247595523-630512081-1323873168=:10700" Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: EeePC 900 && 10-CURRENT: a story of success X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 14 Dec 2011 14:32:50 -0000 This message is in MIME format. KDE3 fits my needs. Hello Matthias, Yes KDE3 and Firefox 3.6 etc. It took a great deal of time until KDE4 became usaable and I usually installed both to have everything work. The probelem then is that old releases are less supported. But I still run a FVWM in a screen just to get a window manager so I definitely see your point. :-) Regards, Daniel _________________________________________________________________________________ Daniel Stolpe Tel: 08 - 688 11 81 stolpe@resilans.se Resilans AB Fax: 08 - 55 00 21 63 http://www.resilans.se/ Box 13 054 556741-1193 103 02 Stockholm --247595523-630512081-1323873168=:10700--
