I don't expect anyone to "hold my hand" as was referenced to on the FreeBSD arch mailing list. This project started because we have never, in three major releases, shipped an installer on PowerPC capable of installing a booting system without absurd amounts of handholding and use of external tools. Now, every single problem that I have had has been related to Xorg, drivers, framebuffers, and other video rendering problems. The same problem occurs with a SPARC 64bit installation because of drivers and configuring for xorg. I am almost willing enough to scrounge up some change, get a similar system from ebay, and send it to one of you in charge of the projects so that you can see that I am not bullshitting anyone on the list. I do realize that the statement posted on the list was and is a reference to me. Apparently, everything works. :-/ I also took out half the memory two DIMMs, and ran a test for both halves. I did a test two DIMMs in slot 0/1 and in slot 2/3, and did the same test for both pairs of DIMMs. (The machine has 4 x 512 MB DIMMS, two Samsung, and two from "Memory Corp".) I found two other PC-3200 DIMMs. 256 MB, and tried those as well. In every test, ASD concluded with "PASSED", ie no faults with the machine. :-/ As it is now, I can get about two hours of working time on the machine before problems starts to show up. Yet, it doesn't feel hot anywhere. I couldn't remove the CPU's as the heads of the bolts holding the heatsinks (hex nut heads) are broken. I'll have to get them out and change the bolts some day. -- Torfinn From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 16 17:00:39 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A86741065672 for ; Sun, 16 Jan 2011 17:00:39 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from superbisquit@gmail.com) Received: from mail-vw0-f54.google.com (mail-vw0-f54.google.com [209.85.212.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 56DA38FC17 for ; Sun, 16 Jan 2011 17:00:38 +0000 (UTC) Received: by vws9 with SMTP id 9so1738133vws.13 for ; Sun, 16 Jan 2011 09:00:38 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date :message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type; bh=3Iv9hiQid4Ok4u8Xk8FjiQPwEX9CAGLT0ywGC9N5jFs=; b=Rx/af6UnRPwhg6ttg3wcrvRgfHCl4y/Oeo1LP9Q6al8nAIiuuCm4a6rBKU8Xttv9Un q/AD9UoFG9tVKxWo9l4pSyXYg7DXPMRH97oKYjq8gDuwmya5/+hJgmGf1eiMK0QrurGl fMEGlDJqItjzS+eL/i99Nf/jHBlaUu3YrqXEM= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type; b=R9uthv2jcf79BOVKvssaN06nInFyP1GioNmp+IjBjv/L5Xi3GNF7mA69xshytOtFb5 B4JvPYtw/whgPRsOD7+smUwNNKbcomLGIu3/lj+suaiR8srFGXpn2jOO8EDrLMSurt16 RpFXDkKBWw8bMrh8VD2v6LWdyYAKYr0gtRYVg= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.220.177.76 with SMTP id bh12mr1013322vcb.106.1295197236449; Sun, 16 Jan 2011 09:00:36 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.220.187.7 with HTTP; Sun, 16 Jan 2011 09:00:36 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: References: Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2011 12:00:36 -0500 Message-ID: From: Super Bisquit To: Gary Driggs Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Xorg problems. A few things I have figured out: 1) whenever I try to boot a FreeBSD install CD ("disc1") on this machine, it hangs with acd0 errors, and will not go on from there. This goes for both the FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 image and the FreeBSD 9.0-20101118-SNAP image. 2) If I put the same image on a usb memory stick, I can successfully boot it, provided that there isn't a CD in the cd drive. If there is a cd in the drive, the hang problem shows up again. Again, this holds true for both the 8.2-RC1 and the 9.0-20101118-SNAP image. 3) When I get to the main screen, I select Fixit, then "live filesystem from usb", but the installer says "no usb devices found". 4) Since there isn't a "scroll lock" key on a Mac keyboard, I do not know how to display the boot messages, so I can't give more info about what might be wrong. 5) I could have used "dmesg" but it isn't on the install image. I could have mounted the live fs manually, but the install image doesn't have a "mount" command. Info about this machine[II] and about FreeBSD on this machine[I]. Questions: a) is there a way to perform the "scroll lock" keypress on a Mac keyboard? b) how can I get the livefs mounted? Nasty HW errors, including bad RAM, show up after a couple of minutes/hours. Sometimes only during heavy compile jobs. I have such an imac. And my RAM issue on my G5 showed up only when I was building world. I managed to get that working only with a pc keyboard where the keys are there. I'd try to set up a netboot environment. You'd need a freebsd box where you can crossbuild a ppc setup. This can be a i386 or an amd64 or even another ppc box. (The faster the machine is, the better the build times ;) Then you build the stuff and export it via nfs. On the G5 you have to tell OF where to boot from. That is all. Let me know if you need the details. This PowerBook has a broken optical drive, so I just dd'ed the image onto a usb memory stick, and booted that from Open Firmware. (Would it be possible to add an Apple boot partition to a usb memory stick so it could boot from the boot menu (option / alt key) on a Mac?) The image did work, I got to the main menu, and could select Fixit, but when I tried "livefs from usb", the installer claimed that there were no USB devices available. Full details on the FreeBSD page[2] for this machine. This is the reason why my PowerMac G4 Quicksilver did not work properly with X until now. Also, certain graphics cards will require it in order to properly function. You know good and well how much I have tried finding a solution. If in doubt, have someone test it out on similar equipment. Look at the man 4 agp page. This may be useful to people trying to set up new machines. An ISO is here: http://people.freebsd.org/~nwhitehorn/bsdinstall-powerpc-20110116.iso.bz2 Because of some trouble with mkisofs, the CD is not an HFS hybrid and so is slightly harder to boot than normal. You must first boot into Open Firmware (cmd-option-O-F), and then enter: boot cd:,\BOOT\LOADER.;1 cd:0 -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 20 23:55:12 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C21C1065698 for ; Thu, 20 Jan 2011 23:55:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from super_bisquit@yahoo.com) Received: from nm8.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com (nm8.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com [98.139.91.78]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 277A88FC16 for ; Thu, 20 Jan 2011 23:55:12 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [98.139.91.61] by nm8.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Jan 2011 23:41:39 -0000 Received: from [98.139.91.46] by tm1.bullet.mail.sp2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Jan 2011 23:41:39 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] by omp1046.mail.sp2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Jan 2011 23:41:39 -0000 X-Yahoo-Newman-Property: ymail-3 X-Yahoo-Newman-Id: 886575.29426.bm@omp1046.mail.sp2.yahoo.com Received: (qmail 44986 invoked by uid 60001); 20 Jan 2011 23:41:39 -0000 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=yahoo.com; s=s1024; t=1295566899; bh=k6o/vmReCOAyb6IvXXE/hsaJB+LKR6azV7tE01AjRkY=; h=Message-ID:X-YMail-OSG:Received:X-Mailer:Date:From:Subject:To:MIME-Version:Content-Type; b=SiEUYgkUvAgU656MnD08rG+3Dmur8NqhnNNiHNOQUZGJBLojJM8EbM5HNeWHdwFsgIwf3nzxUVVt9nV77L4OtSelxu0ckeVkF112KaEPdaFj2148C3RLwOLFPtFLSmid+A0GNJCR+XPWeHIvC1LE/Q5CfuKB+EqdCivtW7mVVL4= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=s1024; d=yahoo.com; h=Message-ID:X-YMail-OSG:Received:X-Mailer:Date:From:Subject:To:MIME-Version:Content-Type; b=AsbNjEM+BKQ9cjE+qs20wA0QJEIVuYbh779goOpBSqB0uuwTFXLTHojhzszTrwaxTF3kNgwuTST4rixoeuGIljQSfyqcjjgHM0MwTYfaelIrxrHpqC5UToNDptJWzJ7I/2TuPThPcrszS2lpUXvwWLoQ40jcs4va9qkfgLelPXg=; Message-ID: <461075.44926.qm@web110114.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> X-YMail-OSG: gAhLVwMVM1mbi.ekTHQoVS8pjQgtTa3P1MZkle0SRON9wHv RUodSWDbpEqzIHgrIwMPCSou_OBHGpp.J7lPyj1AEn8BpKMjwl8yn9YuLvp4 cgVeOYt2iJZAbavfHW2.4qtg9NW.nxI6fUCjSpMJi_EndWwnZ2.muFkHm_tm zb.VceCknNmx1NIpLUMUsGJkOLfz8HkXby1v1_djGg7Xo7y3LQv_nVtaTBQk t2FVyMBBCXUChZQKCLJCVkU8sQtgqcYgCGO2VJ25iok81EpgpPZBcXW_qwdh sT84LN5AMyF4wLvSqbyjrQM30Bgaxoa4hZjAfT8Pz.LMLpr5Bv4MH.tamNhE - Received: from [98.192.248.217] by web110114.mail.gq1.yahoo.com via HTTP; Thu, 20 Jan 2011 15:41:39 PST X-Mailer: YahooMailClassic/11.4.20 YahooMailWebService/0.8.107.285259 Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2011 15:41:39 -0800 (PST) From: Super Biscuit To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Fri, 21 Jan 2011 00:05:35 +0000 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: Proof # 2 for agp andwhy is gcc still at 3.4 for normal users? I can't answer the agp thing, I just build with it. It provides absolutely nothing though, except a mostly useless /dev/agpgart (my machine is a single MDD). However, system gcc on ppc is 4.2.1, just like on every other architecture. The ports are broken, though, last time I checked. I've managed to build gcc 4.4.0 successfully with some hacks, but nothing worth sharing. Personally, I think that trying is always worthwhile.=20 People who are currently running (or trying to run) FreeBSD and ports on their PowerPC based machines today are a kind of pioneers - they're doing this before anybody else. But, it requires a lot of special qualities; patience, stubbornness, not giving up in spite of many failures, and keeping trying in spite of little feedback. So, personally I think you should continue. But the decision is up to you. Oh, and here is a small "trick" I use; when I'm banging my head against impossible problems on a project, I put it down and let it rest for a while, and do something else in the mean time. If I'm lucky, some project with a higher rate of success (or just easier to do). You are perhaps referring to the problem I'm having with my PowerMac G4? Cool. The specifications of my machine are here[1], the FreeBSD worklog here[2]. The machine is currently running FreeBSD 8.2-prerelease: root@kg-g4# uname -a FreeBSD kg-g4.kg4.no 8.2-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 8.2-PRERELEASE #0: Fri Jan 21 21:42:26 CET 2011 root@kg-g4.kg4.no:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC powerpc And, if I'm correct, it has a PCI graphics card (as opposed to a AGP one): root@kg-g4# pciconf -lv | grep -A4 vga vgapci0@pci0:0:16:0: class=0x030000 card=0xa5b80208 chip=0x011010de rev=0xa1 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'NVIDIA Corporation' device = 'NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 (NV11)' class = display subclass = VGA The problem is, that Xorg hangs every time I try to run it. So, if I try: Xorg -configure -retro the machine hangs hard. And (after reboot) I can see that it hasn't written anything to the /root/xorg.conf.new file: root@kg-g4# ls -l /root/xorg* -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 0 Jan 21 23:43 /root/xorg.conf.new I did try loading the agp.ko module; just in case, but it didn't make a difference. E.g: Xorg is not always a technical question. The normal support mailing lists are more geared towards i386 and amd64. Snapshot and release information can be a part of the mailing list. Also, it would allow developers and hackers to search the mailing lists for any common errors and problems. Examples on the mailing list would be: "Installation doesn't work, bm0 times out." "Xorg starts but is unresponsive." "Usb device is not recognized." The advantages would be: These would be active users of the equipment. Tutorials, web logs, and reference pages would be up to date. Developers, hackers, and port maintainers can view what is broken or what works on the system. I copied the bsdinstaller image to a usb stick using dd: dd if= of =/dev/da4 bs=10240 conv=sync and used the usual Open Firmware magic to boot that. The image booted, but it tries to mount root from cd9660:/dev/acd0 and fails. Unfortunately, the keybaord didnm't work at that stage, so I couldn't try to mount it manually. What "magic" are the release images (disc1) using for the root mount? Those works when dd'ed to a usb memory stick. Hope this helps. Now there is dmesg output (normal) on the FreeBSD page for my PowerMac G5: http://sites.google.com/site/tingox/powermac_g5_freebsd Verbose dmesg coming! -- Torfinn From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 22 23:38:47 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6E5CB106566B for ; Sat, 22 Jan 2011 23:38:47 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from thalia-smout.broadpark.no (thalia-smout.broadpark.no [80.202.8.21]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 284E58FC0A for ; Sat, 22 Jan 2011 23:38:47 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Received: from ignis-smin.broadpark.no ([80.202.8.11]) by thalia-smout.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u3-15.01 64bit (built Feb 12 2010)) with ESMTP id <0LFG0088A70LYJ70@thalia-smout.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sun, 23 Jan 2011 00:38:45 +0100 (CET) Received: from kg-v2.kg4.no ([84.48.120.77]) by ignis-smin.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u3-15.01 64bit (built Feb 12 2010)) with SMTP id <0LFG0068570LWA80@ignis-smin.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sun, 23 Jan 2011 00:38:45 +0100 (CET) Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2011 00:38:45 +0100 From: Torfinn Ingolfsen To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Message-id: <20110123003845.053726a7.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> X-Mailer: Sylpheed 3.0.3 (GTK+ 2.22.1; amd64-portbld-freebsd8.1) X-Face: "t9w2,-X@O^I`jVW\sonI3.,36KBLZE*AL[y9lL[PyFD*r_S:dIL9c[8Y>V42R0"!"yb_zN,f#%.[PYYNq; m"_0v; ~rUM2Yy!zmkh)3&U|u!=T(zyv,MHJv"nDH>OJ`t(@mil461d_B'Uo|'nMwlKe0Mv=kvV?Nh@>Hb<3s_z2jYgZhPb@?Wi^x1a~Hplz1.zH Subject: PowerMac G5 and FreeBSD 9.0-current: no disks? This made it possible for me to get dmesg output from the machine, see the FreeBSD page[3]. When I am looking at the the dmesg, I can see that the hard drive isn't detected. Partial output: atapci0: mem 0x80600000-0x80601fff irq 256 at device 12.0 on pci6 ata2: on atapci0 ata3: on atapci0 ata4: on atapci0 ata5: on atapci0 atapci1: at device 12.1 on pci6 pcib1: failed to reserve resource for atapci1 atapci1: 0x10 bytes of rid 0x20 res 4 failed (0, 0xffffffff). atapci1: unable to map interrupt device_attach: atapci1 attach returned 6 I see the errors for atapci1, but AFAIK, nothing is connected there. However, the cd-rom drive is detected: acd0: DVDR at ata0-master UDMA66 Here is the strange part: if I look at the verbose dmesg, I see the hard drive: ata2: Identifying devices: 00000001 ata2: New devices: 00000001 ata2-master: pio=PIO4 wdma=WDMA2 udma=UDMA133 cable=40 wire ad0: setting UDMA100 ... ad0: 156334MB at ata2-master UDMA100 SATA 1.5Gb/s ad0: 320173056 sectors [317632C/16H/63S] 16 sectors/interrupt 1 depth queue The FreeBSD page cotains both the normal and verbose dmesg output. Is there anything else I can help with?
