FWIW, on the Xserve G5 I run = FreeBSD/powerpc64 9-CURRENT on, sometimes during boot the hard (ad0) = drive will fail to be probed and hence the system will fail to find and = mount the root file system. However, if I drop to the debugger and = issue a "reboot" at that point then on the subsequent boot the hard = drive will usually be probed correctly and the system will boot fully. = (Sometimes I have to iterate this a few times, but eventually the hard = drive is probed and the system can boot.) My dmesg output is almost identical to the one you have above: atapci0: mem 0x80600000-0x80601fff = irq 256 at device 12.0 on pci8 ata2: on atapci0 ata3: on atapci0 ata4: on atapci0 ata5: on atapci0 atapci1: at device 12.1 on pci8 pcib1: failed to reserve resource for atapci1 atapci1: 0x10 bytes of rid 0x20 res 4 failed (0, 0xffffffffffffffff). atapci1: unable to map interrupt device_attach: atapci1 attach returned 6 It would be nice if the hard drive probed reliably every time, because = as it stands it makes remote restarts a bit of a crap shoot. FWIW, on the Xserve G5 I run FreeBSD/powerpc64 9-CURRENT on, sometimes during boot the hard (ad0) drive will fail to be probed and hence the system will fail to > find and mount the root file system. However, if I drop to the debugger and issue a "reboot" at that point then on the subsequent boot the hard drive will usually be probed correctly and the system will boot > fully. (Sometimes I have to iterate this a few times, but eventually the hard drive is probed and the system can boot.) In my case, it seems quite consistent. I just did a little test. For all normal boots I used: set hw.ata.atapi_dma=0 boot for all verbose boots I used: set hw.atapi_dma=0 boot -v after each boot, I used the LiveCD, and 'atacontrol list' and 'atacontrol reinit ata2' to check if drive ad0 (the internal drive with OS X on it) was there. 5 normal boots: no ad0 1 verbose boot: ad0 detected 1 normal boot: no ad0 1 verbose boot: ad0 detected. Perhaps it is a timing issue? Perhaps printing all the extra text lines on the verbose boot gives the drive (or controller) enough time to become ready? I don't know. -- Torfinn From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 23 19:17:59 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A2221106566B for ; Sun, 23 Jan 2011 19:17:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from thalia-smout.broadpark.no (thalia-smout.broadpark.no [80.202.8.21]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5C6508FC24 for ; Sun, 23 Jan 2011 19:17:59 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Received: from ignis-smin.broadpark.no ([80.202.8.11]) by thalia-smout.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u3-15.01 64bit (built Feb 12 2010)) with ESMTP id <0LFH008HVPLUKP20@thalia-smout.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sun, 23 Jan 2011 20:17:54 +0100 (CET) Received: from kg-v2.kg4.no ([84.48.120.77]) by ignis-smin.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u3-15.01 64bit (built Feb 12 2010)) with SMTP id <0LFH00LSPPLUI090@ignis-smin.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sun, 23 Jan 2011 20:17:54 +0100 (CET) Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2011 20:17:54 +0100 From: Torfinn Ingolfsen To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Message-id: <20110123201754.c10d24c9.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> In-reply-to: <4D38503C.5090805@freebsd.org> References: <4D38503C.5090805@freebsd.org> X-Mailer: Sylpheed 3.0.3 (GTK+ 2.22.1; amd64-portbld-freebsd8.1) X-Face: "t9w2,-X@O^I`jVW\sonI3.,36KBLZE*AL[y9lL[PyFD*r_S:dIL9c[8Y>V42R0"!"yb_zN,f#%.[PYYNq; m"_0v; ~rUM2Yy!zmkh)3&U|u!=T(zyv,MHJv"nDH>OJ`t(@mil461d_B'Uo|'nMwlKe0Mv=kvV?Nh@>Hb<3s_z2jYgZhPb@?Wi^x1a~Hplz1.zH Subject: Re: PowerPC installer X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2011 19:17:59 -0000 More feedback on the installer: I put another SATA hard drive in my PowerMac G5, and decided to install on that. It counts the number of files in the archive to make the progress bars in the next screen, so there did not seem to be a easy way to indicate progress. I need to find a way to fix this. Hopefully, there will be automatic kernel fan control before 9.0 on all G5 systems (it is already in place for G5 iMacs and some towers). -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 24 11:07:06 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFB1B10656A3 for ; Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:07:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DE43F8FC23 for ; Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:07:06 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p0OB76CI077887 for ; Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:07:06 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p0OB76Bb077885 for freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:07:06 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:07:06 GMT Message-Id: <201101241107.p0OB76Bb077885@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:07:07 -0000 Note: to view an individual PR, use: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=(number). Hmm, I guess I have been spoilt by the "SMP in GENERIC" on amd64 and i386. Let's see, the bsdinstaller snapshot CD doesn't appear to include a src distribution. Hold down the left mouse button during power-on. Some drives in the G5s have a barely reachable eject button on the front if you pull down the drive slot door. One of mine actually had the physical eject button removed so it's a bit of a hassle if I want to swap install discs. I'm curious to try the version 9 image you're referring to as I'm unable to get SATA drives to appear from either the 8.2 RC1 release or Nathan's custom disc. There's also a powerpc64 ISO at http://people.freebsd.org/~nwhitehorn/bsdinstall-powerpc64-20110124.iso.bz2, with the same booting instructions, if you're interested. It seems to work for me, but it does make certain assumptions that may make it non-portable: - It assumes that the sensor device is already attached when it starts the management kproc (it should be attached, it's not started until interrupts are enabled, so all devices should have been scanned by then). I gutted it from Andreas Tobler's FCU driver, so some comments may not be completely correct. It probably also violates style(9) in several places, which I can address later. To compile, you need the following: apply the enclosed patch, put the driver in ...sys/powerpc/powermac/windtunnel.c, and add 'device windtunnel' to your kernel config. - Justin --Apple-Mail-2-194145544 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit --Apple-Mail-2-194145544-- From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 29 22:04:51 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: powerpc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 348AC106564A for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 22:04:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xcllnt@mac.com) Received: from asmtpout027.mac.com (asmtpout027.mac.com [17.148.16.102]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 205548FC0A for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 22:04:51 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Received: from [192.168.2.13] (atm.xcllnt.net [70.36.220.6]) by asmtp027.mac.com (Oracle Communications Messaging Exchange Server 7u4-18.01 64bit (built Jul 15 2010)) with ESMTPSA id <0LFS00JULYIV8V70@asmtp027.mac.com>; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 13:04:09 -0800 (PST) X-Proofpoint-Virus-Version: vendor=fsecure engine=2.50.10432:5.2.15,1.0.148,0.0.0000 definitions=2011-01-29_05:2011-01-28, 2011-01-29, 1970-01-01 signatures=0 X-Proofpoint-Spam-Details: rule=notspam policy=default score=0 spamscore=0 ipscore=0 suspectscore=1 phishscore=0 bulkscore=0 adultscore=0 classifier=spam adjust=0 reason=mlx engine=6.0.2-1012030000 definitions=main-1101290090 From: Marcel Moolenaar Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 13:04:07 -0800 Message-id: <550814DC-3E80-401C-B725-BFCB391726DF@mac.com> To: powerpc@freebsd.org X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.1082) Cc: Subject: Beware of revision 218075 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 22:04:51 -0000 All, Support for the MPC85xx development systems was broken 7 months ago with initial support for G5 hardware and further regressed by the support for FDT. Revision 218075 has some sweeping changes related to the interrupt framework, so please beware. Since I don't have G5 hardware it's possible that G5 is broken due to it, so I appreciate getting a thumbs up or thumbs down from anyone updating to 218075 or later. I'll be causing some more churn in the coming weeks, but that should be mostly related to the FDT support and as such should not impact any powerpc platforms other than mpc85xx. The "max IRQ = 128" thing also likely breaks Cell systems, like the PS3, where the PIC has 256 interrupts, but I haven't looked into that in detail yet. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 29 23:08:51 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A2782106566B for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:08:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freebsd.org) Received: from argol.doit.wisc.edu (argol.doit.wisc.edu [144.92.197.212]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 747648FC0A for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:08:51 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; format=flowed Received: from avs-daemon.smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) id <0LFT00C024AROM00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 17:08:51 -0600 (CST) Received: from comporellon.tachypleus.net (adsl-76-208-68-88.dsl.mdsnwi.sbcglobal.net [76.208.68.88]) by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) with ESMTPSA id <0LFT00C0H4APMV00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 17:08:50 -0600 (CST) Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 17:08:49 -0600 From: Nathan Whitehorn In-reply-to: <4D449D3B.5050008@freebsd.org> To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Message-id: <4D449E01.5010107@freebsd.org> X-Spam-Report: AuthenticatedSender=yes, SenderIP=76.208.68.88 X-Spam-PmxInfo: Server=avs-12, Version=5.6.0.2009776, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.376379, Antispam-Data: 2011.1.29.225715, SenderIP=76.208.68.88 References: <550814DC-3E80-401C-B725-BFCB391726DF@mac.com> <4D449504.7030209@freebsd.org> <5C0CFF6E-94C9-43F5-A22F-5A0F6ECC0448@mac.com> <4D4498FF.9050808@freebsd.org> <4D449D3B.5050008@freebsd.org> User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD amd64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101214 Thunderbird/3.1.7 Subject: Re: Beware of revision 218075 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:08:51 -0000 On 01/29/11 17:05, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: > On 01/29/11 16:58, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: >> On Jan 29, 2011, at 2:47 PM, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: >> >>> On 01/29/11 16:38, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: >>>> On Jan 29, 2011, at 2:30 PM, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: >>>> >>>>>> I'll be causing some more churn in the coming weeks, but that >>>>>> should be mostly related to the FDT support and as such should not >>>>>> impact any powerpc platforms other than mpc85xx. >>>>>> >>>>> I would really have appreciated a heads up and a chance to test >>>>> this before it went into the tree. I should clarify this. "Breaks" in a future, theoretical sense. One of my earlier changes removed the SYSINIT to do the binding and instead do it here. I partially reverted that (i.e. the SYSINIT is still there, but the change above remained), because I didn't know the consequence of such a change. > > The "max IRQ = 128" thing also likely breaks Cell systems, like the PS3, where the PIC has 256 interrupts, but I haven't looked into that in detail yet. This is where we need to implement multiple passes. I tried to do that in the same commit, but ended up with a lot more churn than I was comfortable handling. But ideally, we probe busses and interrupt controllers first, so that we don't have this problem -- all interrupt controllers will have registered before we need to map from PIC+pin to IRQ. There's probably a quick fix in case it's broken. If the pin is higher than the number of IRQs we have recorded for the PIC, we can simply bump the number of irqs the PIC has (i.e. extend the IRQ range assigned to the PIC). Unless we have other PICs recorded this can always be done -- since the PS3 only has 1 PIC, this should be a quick kluge to get it working again. -- Marcel Moolenaar xcllnt@mac.com From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 29 23:27:46 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: powerpc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04E1E106564A for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:27:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freebsd.org) Received: from argol.doit.wisc.edu (argol.doit.wisc.edu [144.92.197.212]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CA0CE8FC13 for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:27:45 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; format=flowed Received: from avs-daemon.smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) id <0LFT00E005699H00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for powerpc@freebsd.org; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 17:27:45 -0600 (CST) Received: from comporellon.tachypleus.net (adsl-76-208-68-88.dsl.mdsnwi.sbcglobal.net [76.208.68.88]) by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) with ESMTPSA id <0LFT00CKO567MV00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu>; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 17:27:44 -0600 (CST) Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 17:27:43 -0600 From: Nathan Whitehorn In-reply-to: To: Marcel Moolenaar Message-id: <4D44A26F.1070701@freebsd.org> X-Spam-Report: AuthenticatedSender=yes, SenderIP=76.208.68.88 X-Spam-PmxInfo: Server=avs-11, Version=5.6.0.2009776, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.376379, Antispam-Data: 2011.1.29.231515, SenderIP=76.208.68.88 References: <550814DC-3E80-401C-B725-BFCB391726DF@mac.com> <4D449504.7030209@freebsd.org> <5C0CFF6E-94C9-43F5-A22F-5A0F6ECC0448@mac.com> <4D4498FF.9050808@freebsd.org> <4D449D3B.5050008@freebsd.org> User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD amd64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101214 Thunderbird/3.1.7 Cc: powerpc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Beware of revision 218075 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:27:46 -0000 On 01/29/11 17:18, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: > On Jan 29, 2011, at 3:05 PM, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: > >> On 01/29/11 16:58, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: >>> On Jan 29, 2011, at 2:47 PM, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: >>> >>>> On 01/29/11 16:38, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: >>>>> On Jan 29, 2011, at 2:30 PM, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: >>>>> >>>>>>> I'll be causing some more churn in the coming weeks, but that >>>>>>> should be mostly related to the FDT support and as such should not >>>>>>> impact any powerpc platforms other than mpc85xx. >>>>>>> >>>>>> I would really have appreciated a heads up and a chance to test this before it went into the tree. I would also note that you appear well on your way to duplicating all the PCI logic in /sys/powerpc/ofw, and that unifying OFW/FDT, since they are the same thing, would probably save a lot of pain down the road. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 29 23:36:35 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: powerpc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 23ACE106564A; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:36:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xcllnt@mac.com) Received: from asmtpout029.mac.com (asmtpout029.mac.com [17.148.16.104]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 08ACB8FC12; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:36:34 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Received: from [192.168.2.13] (atm.xcllnt.net [70.36.220.6]) by asmtp029.mac.com (Oracle Communications Messaging Exchange Server 7u4-20.01 64bit (built Nov 21 2010)) with ESMTPSA id <0LFT00HP05KUND70@asmtp029.mac.com>; Sat, 29 Jan 2011 15:36:31 -0800 (PST) X-Proofpoint-Virus-Version: vendor=fsecure engine=2.50.10432:5.2.15,1.0.148,0.0.0000 definitions=2011-01-29_05:2011-01-28, 2011-01-29, 1970-01-01 signatures=0 X-Proofpoint-Spam-Details: rule=notspam policy=default score=0 spamscore=0 ipscore=0 suspectscore=0 phishscore=0 bulkscore=0 adultscore=0 classifier=spam adjust=0 reason=mlx engine=6.0.2-1012030000 definitions=main-1101290119 From: Marcel Moolenaar In-reply-to: <4D44A26F.1070701@freebsd.org> Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 15:36:29 -0800 Message-id: <81D12FF3-11D1-4625-ABE3-9EE30748E9E6@mac.com> References: <550814DC-3E80-401C-B725-BFCB391726DF@mac.com> <4D449504.7030209@freebsd.org> <5C0CFF6E-94C9-43F5-A22F-5A0F6ECC0448@mac.com> <4D4498FF.9050808@freebsd.org> <4D449D3B.5050008@freebsd.org> <4D44A26F.1070701@freebsd.org> To: Nathan Whitehorn X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.1082) Cc: powerpc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Beware of revision 218075 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 23:36:35 -0000 On Jan 29, 2011, at 3:27 PM, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: >>> Index: intr_machdep.c >>> =================================================================== >>> --- intr_machdep.c (revision 218074) >>> +++ intr_machdep.c (revision 218075) >>> @@ -373,6 +426,9 @@ >>> i->pol != INTR_POLARITY_CONFORM) >>> PIC_CONFIG(i->pic, i->intline, i->trig, i->pol); >>> >>> + if (i != NULL&& i->pic == root_pic) >>> + PIC_BIND(i->pic, i->intline, i->cpu); >>> + >>> if (i->event != NULL) >>> PIC_ENABLE(i->pic, i->intline, vector); >>> } >> >> That can be reverted without harm AFAICT.
