So far I was able to use standard install CD media, using FreeBSD-9.0-CURRENT-201102-powerpc-disc1.iso image from ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/201102/ directory. It took me a bit of trial and error to create workable disc layout, mainly because I did not get in touch with Macs before and basically know nothing about openfirmware :) Now it works, I completed full system rebuild from sources twice. So far, so good. I installed X from ports and here comes first question. I have Samsung monitor connected to mini via DVI. In 'text' mode monitor says 1920x1080, I have 65 lines of text, each 200 characters long, it looks like 'used' screen area has 1600x1050 dimension or something like this. In X, however, monitor says mode is only 1280x960. As it works in console mode in 1920x1080, it must be possible to use this in X too. Needless to say, it uses this mode in Mac OS X, too. I use ati driver here. And one more question - I looked for dual boot configs, but did not find any FreeBSD + Mac OS X combo. I will try something, again, when I will either free another HDD for this purpose (there are files I would like to preserve, and it takes some time to put them somewhere else) or buy a new one (a bit bigger, but HDDs are somewhat more costly these days), but if someone already did this and have some notes to share, I'll be just glad. Also, I plan to test bsdinstaller found on page http://wiki.freebsd.org/BSDInstall - just to see if it will be easier to proceed, even if it seems to be a bit older than snapshot used. That's for now. If anybody has some hints fro me, needs some more data to answer my questions or would like me to test something, just let me know. As soon as I have some more time I plan to write about my experiences gained so other could benefit from my tests as well. However, I have heard from other users that it works as well on newer consoles as old. The directions at http://people.freebsd.org/~nwhitehorn/ps3/README presumably apply also to newer consoles once you have installed a bootloader. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 15 14:56:26 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix, from userid 1033) id EB5461065677; Tue, 15 Nov 2011 14:56:26 +0000 (UTC) Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2011 14:56:26 +0000 From: Alexey Dokuchaev To: Nathan Whitehorn Message-ID: <20111115145626.GA33573@FreeBSD.org> References: <4EC27B34.5060003@freebsd.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <4EC27B34.5060003@freebsd.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Cc: FreeBSD PowerPC ML Subject: Re: Question on PS3 slim X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2011 14:56:27 -0000 * Good, useful part of the email: * On Tue, Nov 15, 2011 at 08:46:12AM -0600, Nathan Whitehorn wrote: > On 11/15/11 08:00, Super Bisquit wrote: > >Mr. Whitehorn, do you have the code for loading another system on the PS3? > >There's a spare one at the college here and I'd like to be able to get it > >up and running. * Evil Lines That Should Not be Quoted: * > >_______________________________________________ > >freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org mailing list > >http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-ppc > >To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-ppc-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" Nathan, Super Bisquit (and some others) -- guys, may I kindly ask you not to quote mailman footer in your replies? IMO you should have a pretty good idea about how the system works before you attempt homebrew on consoles. For instance, a couple minutes of searching the internet would tell you that in order to put unsigned code on newer ps3's which have "OtherOS" removed, jailbreaking is the only possible option for those consoles (as well as older models with the upgraded firmware.) Even if you're planning on doing this just to say you've done it, you still likely need a bit of research before attempting it. I'm speaking as someone who's worked on code/homebrew for several consoles ranging from 8-bit to current gen systems. Things go so much better when you've put in the time so you know what you're doing. Most of the questions you have about booting homebrew for pretty much any system out there have been asked or the info is out there. You just have to look :) Back on topic, running the FreeBSD without OtherOS would likely require further changes since the emulated sandbox that OtherOS provided isn't there. I've read the Linux kernel needed patched in order to, for example, take advantage of all 7 SPE's. Also, last I heard, it doesn't have direct harddrive support because OtherOS provided a faked SATA (I think) interface to it. I think it can still get the root FS via NFS. *As a quick aside, are there any rules (official or recommended) on top vs bottom posting?* From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 15 22:08:06 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ED815106564A for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2011 22:08:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from richo@psych0tik.net) Received: from bedford.accountservergroup.com (bedford.accountservergroup.com [50.22.11.19]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C29268FC17 for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2011 22:08:06 +0000 (UTC) Received: from boxand.lnk.telstra.net ([203.45.130.125] helo=richh-imac.office.boxdice.com.au) by bedford.accountservergroup.com with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES128-SHA:128) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1RQRAj-0004du-IE; Tue, 15 Nov 2011 16:08:06 -0600 Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2011 09:08:11 +1100 From: richo To: Harley Laue Message-ID: <20111115220811.GA22968@richh-imac.office.boxdice.com.au> References: <4EC27B34.5060003@freebsd.org> <20111115145626.GA33573@FreeBSD.org> <4EC2A1B1.2040605@freebsd.org> <4EC2BFBF.6020207@gmail.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="IJpNTDwzlM2Ie8A6" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <4EC2BFBF.6020207@gmail.com> X-PGP-Key: http://natalya.psych0tik.net/~richo/pubkey.asc User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - bedford.accountservergroup.com X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - freebsd.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [47 12] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - psych0tik.net X-Source: X-Source-Args: X-Source-Dir: Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Question on PS3 slim X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2011 22:08:07 -0000 --IJpNTDwzlM2Ie8A6 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Disposition: inline On 15/11/11 13:38 -0600, Harley Laue wrote: > [ ... ] >*As a quick aside, are there any rules (official or recommended) on >top vs bottom posting?* I twitch every time someone top posts, especially on -hackers where the discussions is often quite involved and can be difficult to follow for the uninitiated (like myself) -- richo || Today's excuse: Atilla the Hub http://blog.psych0tik.net --IJpNTDwzlM2Ie8A6 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: Digital signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJOwuLLAAoJEIKiWz6J5yQVxMUH/3dCMa6lHXMWYbTYvhRiJGnx FXhjXwWhmc5mPa7TSndLfzb1LPFeIOylx6APf2axUaEDNThcLb33P9ZzTOCAARv3 OKb3DeQ2kO5pg3rHEf9nfeFtQSITIikQtYHbYOphYGKOWpz+QhViQ6zECX0M0wcY 9EZM4BTJqaABeyiwwKDWn4P2/V6ZVjauATitRjf5ArHiHvD1MTmzWHf9ugLvcagQ Uk0fwXbN4K/VLICPsvpJ0mDilW+BguwPdDdrluQUpduO3Y7oC8BU/oDYt9HOmSpx bGk4ax/nfwxZbFX00C4x7Tfl4ve3KNJmkIjCPqckyblAva/yPe5yqH60nFquEl0= =gVSf -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --IJpNTDwzlM2Ie8A6-- From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 15 23:53:10 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C3F561065672 for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2011 23:53:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from eterpe-smout.broadpark.no (eterpe-smout.broadpark.no [80.202.8.16]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7FA9C8FC0C for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2011 23:53:10 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Received: from terra-smin.broadpark.no ([80.202.8.13]) by eterpe-smout.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u3-15.01 64bit (built Feb 12 2010)) with ESMTP id <0LUQ00G4G7OKKI80@eterpe-smout.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Wed, 16 Nov 2011 00:53:08 +0100 (CET) Received: from kg-v2.kg4.no ([84.48.120.32]) by terra-smin.broadpark.no (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u3-15.01 64bit (built Feb 12 2010)) with SMTP id <0LUQ00MK67OKAWB0@terra-smin.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Wed, 16 Nov 2011 00:53:08 +0100 (CET) Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2011 00:53:08 +0100 From: Torfinn Ingolfsen To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Message-id: <20111116005308.e47ed734.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> X-Mailer: Sylpheed 3.1.2 (GTK+ 2.24.6; amd64-portbld-freebsd8.2) X-Face: "t9w2,-X@O^I`jVW\sonI3.,36KBLZE*AL[y9lL[PyFD*r_S:dIL9c[8Y>V42R0"!"yb_zN,f#%.[PYYNq; m"_0v; ~rUM2Yy!zmkh)3&U|u!=T(zyv,MHJv"nDH>OJ`t(@mil461d_B'Uo|'nMwlKe0Mv=kvV?Nh@>Hb<3s_z2jYgZhPb@?Wi^x1a~Hplz1.zH Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable Subject: iBook G4: shrink OSX to make room for FreeBSD? I just wanted to know if anybody uses such setup and have some tips for this. What makes me a bit unhappy is display resolution. In console mode full HD 1920x1080, not fully used, but in X only 1400x1050. (A bit more than announced in my first post, anyway, still not full HD resolution.) So if someone could use FullHD resolution with Mac Mini and could share some ideas how to achieve this... If you are installing a recent FreeBSd (I used 9.0-RC2) the FreeBSD installer should take care of partitioning free space, including a boot partition (apple-boot) with the boot loader. Automatic partitioning didn't work for me, so I used manual instead. worked for me, YMMV. One small caveat: gpart is currently unable to create a slice 4 ("ada0s4") on my iBook hard drive, the reason for that is currently unknown. Logical next step: install FreeBSD 9.0-RC2 on that free space. :-) So I did. The installation went fine, with one small hitch: it seems like it is not possible to create a fourth partition (or is i fifth? Anyway, ada0s4) on the internal drive. So currently there isn't a swap partition on the drive. First I thought this was a problem with the bsd installer, but after FreeBSD is installed, gpart also has this problem: kg-ibook# gpart show ada0 => 5 117210235 ada0 APM (55G) 5 262203 - free - (128M) 262208 52626616 2 apple-hfs (25G) 52888824 1600 1 apple-boot (800k) 52890424 29358528 3 freebsd-ufs (14G) 82248952 34961288 - free - (16G) As you can see, the drive is APM partitioned, and there is 16 G of free space on it. g-ibook# gpart add -s 2G -t freebsd-swap ada0 gpart: index '4': No space left on device This make noe sense to me: I have created more than four partition on a APM partitoned drive before. Any clue to what the problem is? More details about this machine and FreeBSd on the FreeBSD page for it[1]. Then you can change number of entries and restore your table. So, something like: # gpart backup ada0 > /tmp/ada0.backup Now edit /tmp/ada0.backup and change line "APM X" to "APM 16". # gpart restore -lF -f x ada0 < /tmp/ada0.backup Now check that all is ok and if so - commit changes # gpart show ada0 # gpart commit ada0 -- WBR, Andrey V. I don't think it's a good idea for the simple reason that if I want to split the first partition into 2, I may find that I cannot recreate the first at the same offset as the one I deleted, because gpart adjusted the first usable sector. The fundamental problem here is that the APM only has 3 entries usable for partitions and since we don't have a gpart method for extending the partition table, users just need to destroy and recreate. Which is another reason why no partition scheme should have magic behaviour: if we later add a method of extending the partition table, any magic behaviour is likely to be in the way. In general: don't look too much and/or too often to quick and dirty "magical" work-arounds or solutions. Understand the problem and be willing to say that we don't have a solution for it (yet). Keep the schemes simple and straight-forward so they all behave the same with roughly the same limitations and features. Ok. I have read information about APM and it seems our code incorrectly handles the APM self size. We always have assumed that maximum allowed entries == total allocated entries, i.e. self.ent_pmblkcnt. But the size of APM and number of already allocated entries could be different. And it seems that APM created from Mac OS, always has some space reserved for expanding the self. So, there is the patch for review: http://people.freebsd.org/~ae/g_part_apm.diff 1. I changed default number of entries to 30 (actually it could be reduced to 14). New tables will consume 32 sectors and the first available sector for partitions will be 4k aligned. 2. The new table hasn't any preallocated entries. It only has reserved space for APM self. 3. Maximum number of entries is determined from the APM self size. 4. Now we can add new partitions while we have free space in the APM and they will be allocated and ent_pmblkcnt will grow. > In general: don't look too much and/or too often to quick and > dirty "magical" work-arounds or solutions.
