X needs to know about devices that are already plugged in when the server starts 2. X needs to get events for devices when they are inserted or removed 3. X needs a basic level of metadata about the device to allow the user to match to the device. Basically, filling out the InputAttributes struct (see include/input.h): typedef struct _InputAttributes { char *product; char *vendor; char *device; char *pnp_id; char *usb_id; char **tags; /* null-terminated */ uint32_t flags; } InputAttributes; #define ATTR_KEYBOARD (1<<0) #define ATTR_POINTER (1<<1) #define ATTR_JOYSTICK (1<<2) #define ATTR_TABLET (1<<3) #define ATTR_TOUCHPAD (1<<4) #define ATTR_TOUCHSCREEN (1<<5) Where flags is currently just a bitfield for the ATTR_* macros and tags are freeform labels coming from the backend (optional). After that it gets handed off to the DDX. -- Dan From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 13 19:28:12 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5059E1065670 for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 19:28:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kibi@ikibiki.org) Received: from glenfiddich.ikibiki.org (glenfiddich.ikibiki.org [88.191.124.82]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0352A8FC16 for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 19:28:11 +0000 (UTC) Received: from home.ikibiki.org ([88.164.242.219] helo=kitty) by glenfiddich.ikibiki.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PohcA-00068W-F7; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 20:28:10 +0100 Received: from kibi by kitty with local (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1PohcA-0004eY-8B; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 20:28:10 +0100 Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2011 20:28:10 +0100 From: Cyril Brulebois To: Dan Nicholson Message-ID: <20110213192810.GB27580@debian.org> References: <20110213124019.GH7840@debian.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="GvznHscUikHnwW2p" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: Organization: Debian User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.20 (2009-06-14) Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org, xorg-devel@lists.x.org, debian-bsd@lists.debian.org Subject: Re: xorg-server/*bsd: moving from hal support to devd support? All variables are listed on: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=3Ddevd.conf&sektion=3D5 below =E2=80=9CVariables that can be used with the match statement=E2=80=9D= (around the middle of the page). > 3. Julien mentioned hal's hald/freebsd/probing/probe-hiddev.c on IRC, and HID_USAGE2 seems to do what we want: | ./hald/freebsd/probing/probe-hiddev.c: case HID_USAGE2(HUP_GENERIC_DESK= TOP, HUG_MOUSE): | ./hald/freebsd/probing/probe-hiddev.c: case HID_USAGE2(HUP_GENERIC_DESK= TOP, HUG_JOYSTICK): | ./hald/freebsd/probing/probe-hiddev.c: case HID_USAGE2(HUP_GENERIC_DESK= TOP, HUG_GAME_PAD): | ./hald/freebsd/probing/probe-hiddev.c: case HID_USAGE2(HUP_GENERIC_DESK= TOP, HUG_KEYBOARD): | ./hald/freebsd/probing/probe-hiddev.c: case HID_USAGE2(HUP_GENERIC_DESK= TOP, HUG_KEYPAD): So info to fill flags is apparently available, and just needs to be used, either on the devd side to set some flags, or on X's side to decide about devices to discard or take into account. I'll try and get that to work. While it is unfortunate that Linux didn't pickup my interface that mostly pre-dated its implementation, I expect the two are close enough that it would be easy to do. I've been hampered by not being able to find anything that approaches a specification for udev in the Google searches I've done. Mostly I've found rants about how great udev is, and how horrible all the competition is. While I'm sure that serves some purpose, it doesn't satisfy my need for a clear, and easy to follow specification. I'm hesitant to just write something that matches the Linux code because I don't have any way of knowing what is supposed to be a documented interface, and what's supposed to be a private change on a whim interface. I'm sure it is just a matter of being unfamiliar with the proper terms to search for. Any hints in this area would be greatly appreciated. If something that is "standard," I'd expect to find good docs somewhere, right? What follows was performed on a GNU/kFreeBSD system in QEMU. For now, I tried to print all variables mentioned in devd.conf(5), and used =E2=80=9Cusb_add mouse=E2=80=9D/=E2=80=9Cusb_del 0.2=E2=80=9D in the Q= EMU console (adding/removing an USB mouse). That notified me about ugen0.2 getting ATTACHED and DETACHED. Since I'm pretty unfamiliar with FreeBSD, I couldn't link that to the according /dev/ums0 being created/deleted. Since I wanted to try and play with hotplug anyway, I wrote a tiny daemon to perform input bookkeeping (inputbk), which does: - list all devices through libdevinfo which seem to be input devices (for now I matched on the drivername, being one of: atkbd, psm, ukbd, ums; uhci should probably be added, but I coudln't check myself); - sleep one second (which could easily be replaced with waiting for a devd ATTACH/DETACH event); - list all devices again, and print added/deleted devices. Then in the xorg-server sources, I started a config/inputkb.c file, and added a device based on the information I printed from the inputbk daemon (which I hardcoded to check quickly how it went), which gave me X working without configuration, and without hal. Now, I'm wondering where to go from here. Given what I wrote up to now, my next move to check hotplug works properly: - make inputbk perform a blocking open on a fifo for writing, - make it wait for a reader to write a listing of devices, - then make it loop and only write updates there. On the X side, we would be doing: - read the initial listing, adding devices as appropriate, - add this fifo to the big select() of X, using a callback which would trigger device addition/removal as notified through the socket by inputbk. In a perfect world, we should be able to have several readers, since we might have some X instances running in parallel, so the named pipe approach is probably a bad idea (then, using a socket and adding a few lines of code would buy a daemon handling several clients). Also, I'd be happy to see the above-mentioned bookkeeping go in some other place. AFAICT, devd is appropriate for change notifications, but I'm not sure its purpose is also to keep a list of available devices. What do you think? AFAICT, devd is appropriate for change notifications, but I'm > not sure its purpose is also to keep a list of available devices. > > What do you think? Just to give background about how the udev backend operates with libudev, here's the API reference for libudev: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/libudev/ What happens is that a udev_monitor is created and the fd is added for polling and handlers are registered. In config/udev.c::config_udev_init(): RegisterBlockAndWakeupHandlers(block_handler, wakeup_handler, NULL); AddGeneralSocket(udev_monitor_get_fd(udev_monitor)); Once the events are received, the udev_device API is used to determine if this is a device we care about and to get information about it. It seems like you've mostly got that part figured out, but my guess is that the single reader aspect of devd is probably a showstopper unless you have another system-wide daemon to multiplex the events out to clients. -- Dan From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 16 04:34:17 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EC6E0106566C; Wed, 16 Feb 2011 04:34:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from guillemj@ono.com) Received: from resmaa12.ono.com (smtp12.ono.com [62.42.230.20]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 741FB8FC08; Wed, 16 Feb 2011 04:34:17 +0000 (UTC) Received: from gaara.hadrons.org (85.136.146.198) by resmaa12.ono.com (8.5.113) (authenticated as guillemj@ono.com) id 4D301C970052AB02; Wed, 16 Feb 2011 04:46:15 +0100 Received: from guillem by gaara.hadrons.org with local (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1PpYuE-000711-4E; Wed, 16 Feb 2011 05:22:22 +0100 Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2011 05:22:21 +0100 From: Guillem Jover To: Cyril Brulebois Message-ID: <20110216042221.GA26233@gaara.hadrons.org> Mail-Followup-To: Cyril Brulebois , Warner Losh , miwi@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org, xorg-devel@lists.x.org, debian-bsd@lists.debian.org, Warner Losh References: <20110213124019.GH7840@debian.org> <4D596ECB.8080404@bsdimp.com> <20110215162855.GR15960@debian.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20110215162855.GR15960@debian.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) Cc: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org, miwi@FreeBSD.org, xorg-devel@lists.x.org, debian-bsd@lists.debian.org, Warner Losh , Warner Losh Subject: Re: xorg-server/*bsd: moving from hal support to devd support? FWIW, I'd really not try to follow udev on this (or for that matter any of the so called Linux plumbing) given their general stance on portability beyond Linux and usual strong reliance on features from latest Linux versions. What I think would be really nice and helpful, as I mentioned on IRC in #debian-kbsd, would be a shared library to parse the output and handle the events from the devd daemon's client socket, etc, which would avoid having to replicate that logic on each application. If that library could also use as backend OpenBSD hotplugd (I don't think NetBSD devmon got implemented, though), and possibly the Solaris sysevent thingy, that'd be a plus, and would make it even easier to replace the now deprecated hal. > Now, I'm wondering where to go from here. I'm not sure why you'd want to have yet another daemon, which seems to be relaying the information devd is already relaying from the kernel, instead of just doing this all in X itself, by querying the initial state through libdevinfo, and then handling hotplug event through the devd client socket (ideally using a shared library for the latter when and if that gets implemented)? thanks, guillem From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 17 15:46:34 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4511F106566B for ; Thu, 17 Feb 2011 15:46:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gofdx-freebsd-x11@m.gmane.org) Received: from lo.gmane.org (lo.gmane.org [80.91.229.12]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C1A8B8FC08 for ; Thu, 17 Feb 2011 15:46:33 +0000 (UTC) Received: from list by lo.gmane.org with local (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1Pq63q-0005bv-2q for freebsd-x11@freebsd.org; Thu, 17 Feb 2011 16:46:30 +0100 Received: from 207.155.204.151.ptr.us.xo.net ([207.155.204.151]) by main.gmane.org with esmtp (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Thu, 17 Feb 2011 16:46:30 +0100 Received: from atkin901 by 207.155.204.151.ptr.us.xo.net with local (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Thu, 17 Feb 2011 16:46:30 +0100 X-Injected-Via-Gmane: http://gmane.org/ To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org From: Mark Atkinson Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2011 07:46:17 -0800 Lines: 44 Message-ID: References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Complaints-To: usenet@dough.gmane.org X-Gmane-NNTP-Posting-Host: 207.155.204.151.ptr.us.xo.net User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101213 Thunderbird/3.1.7 In-Reply-To: X-Enigmail-Version: 1.1.2 Subject: Re: [CFT] xf86-video-ati 6.14.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2011 15:46:34 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 On 02/04/2011 21:22, Martin Wilke wrote: > Howdy, > > 2 days ago was a new ati driver released. fluffy@ and me was using for > few weeks the git version without problems, but we’d like to make > sure this dosen’t broke anything for our ati users. > Here is a patch: > http://people.freebsd.org/~miwi/ati-6140.diff > Changelog: > http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2011-February/001602.html > > Please test and report back, if no problems I’d like to commit it next week. > thx > PS: this release fix some problems with HD54XX chips the bug with > strg+ctrl+backspace; bug is gone for me. > I have a 610 series and this (well this + the updated patch ... replying to the original message here) is working for me. The X-Server has been patched to the latest 1.7.X series, drivers and fonts have been updated to the latest versions, but unfortunately we are not able to update libGL, drm and xorg-server to a higher version because FreeBSD doesn't support GEM/KSE (yet), but it looks good for now, as kib@ is working on that, so we hope the future will be better for us. This update includes some components from Xorg 7.6 with a lot of improvements, and it seems that the performance is much better than the old version. We are calling the update xorg 7.5.1. We hope you will enjoy the new stuff and give us a lot of feedback. We will start an exp-run tonight and depending on how much feedback we get, we plan to commit this update by the first weekend of March. A note for ATI users, the driver was updated to 6.14.0, so you may need to add some stuff to your xorg.conf in the "Section "Device"" Option "int10" "on" Option "BudType" "PCIE" Option "RendrAccel" "on" Option "AccelMethod" "exa" Option "DynamicPM" "on" Option "DRI" "on" So to get the xorg stuff you will need to: run svn co https://trillian.chruetertee.ch/svn/ports/branches/xorg-dev A small merge script to merge the svn checkout into the real portstree can be found here: http://people.freebsd.org/~miwi/xorg/xorgmerge The script is a modified version of the kdemerge script. Please set the KDEDIR variable to the path of your X.org ports. After merging, run one of the following command, depending on which tool you use to manage your installed packages. portupgrade -a \* portmaster -a Please report any problems and issues to x11 (at) FreeBSD.org. I would like to thank: Beat Gaetzi Dima Panov Koop Mast Eitan Adler Without these people the Xorg update would still not be ready now. PS: Please don't send us mails with 'xorg update dosen't' work. If you send us a report, please include the latest Xorg.conf Xorg.log, uname -a output and pkg_info output. Thanks.
