Trying to localize regular data corruption during writes (reads seems not affected) to SATA disk on SheevaPlug box I've found out that it is probably result of cache coherency issue. Reading data back shows that each time exactly 32 sequential aligned data bytes are corrupted. That, if I understand correctly, matches single cache line size/offset. It's in a D-link model "DNS 325", which has 256MB RAM. With FreeBSD 8.3, I found a hang on boot using the default DB-88F6XXX config. I found PHYSMEM_SIZE=0x20000000 hardcoded in sys/arm/mv/kirkwood/std.db88f6xxx which I presume means 512MB RAM - so I changed this to 0x10000000 and then 8.3 booted fine. Now I'm trying 9.0 (primarily because I'm interested in the recent NAND work) and I see the PHYSMEM_SIZE option was removed by commit [210249]: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/svn-src-head/2010-July/018727.html The default 9.0 DB-88F6XXX kernel hangs in exactly the same way as 8.3's did for me: ## Starting application at 0x00900000 ... dtbp = 0xc0c04408 Copyright (c) 1992-2012 The FreeBSD Project. Is there a way I can hardcode the physical memory size which would be equivalent to 8.3's PHYSMEM_SIZE option? Is is there a better way to solve this, and have the memory size found automatically? I meant I'm using -CURRENT, of course - because I'm interested in the recent NAND work. The db88f6281.dts tree is exactly what I was looking for. The memory node was indeed set for 512M, as PHYSMEM_SIZE was before FDT. So I set that accordingly: memory { device_type = "memory"; reg = <0x0 0x10000000>; // 256M at 0x0 }; and now 10.0-CURRENT boots just fine, as did 8.3 with the equivalent change. Yes. The compilers built when we're doing armv6 should have them = defined. I believe they are standard. If not, we should migrate tot he = standard defines. This is much the same as if someone wants a nahalem tree on = x86: TARGET=3Di386 TARGET_ARCH=3Di386 TARGET_CPUTYPE=3Dnahalem or TARGET=3Damd64 TARGET_ARCH=3Damd64 TARGET_CPUTYPE=3Dnahalem to pick which base you are compiling against, and then which = optimizations you wish to build for. >>> I'm also unclear on the distinction between make's MACHINE_ARCH >>> and uname -p; are these supposed to be the same?
