There's a default choice I didn't mention earlier: 0. Leave it alone. (Maybe this will all change with the DocBook XML changeover. I don't know when that is supposed to happen, but if it's not too long, this could be the right way to go.) Finally, there's one last choice: 6. A pretty good case could be made for using instead of tabs in the source blocks. The more I think about it, the more technically-correct that seems. In that case, tidy should be fine as it is now. A new version of Tidy is supposed to be out soonish. Whether it will solve the problems, I don't know. What about lxml? Available in ports (devel/py-lxml), reputed to be good at parsing problem HTML and creating good XHTML. A quick test showed that it seems to do okay with
 elements.

A quick script to generate a test is attached. The W3C validator says
this version of the Porter's Handbook has eight errors, versus the six
errors and five warnings of the Tidy version. (The ugly special-case in
line 12 drops the lxml version to five errors.)

Multiple users on the forums have reported problems with existing
gmirror(8) mirrors being unbootable after upgrading to FreeBSD 9:
http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=28895

The workaround is to set kern.geom.part.check_integrity="0" in
/boot/loader.conf.

The example from the RAID1 chapter of the Handbook isn't helping:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/geom-mirror.html

The procedure overrides the safety and uses the last block of a drive,
regardless of whether it was already allocated to a partition. During
boot, the GEOM system sees the error and stops:

GEOM_MIRROR: Device mirror/gm0 launched (2/2).
GEOM_PART: partition 1 has end offset beyond last LBA: 1250263727 > 1250263726
GEOM_PART: integrity check failed (mirror/gm0, MBR)

To be fair, that example allows (allowed) the user to set up a mirror
of their existing disk complete with whatever partitioning existed. And
it still ought to work if the last block was not part of a partition.

That Handbook chapter could be updated without a huge change by removing
the instructions to turn off the safety (so it will error out if the
user tries it on an allocated last block).

Then add a note or warning along the lines of "The procedure shown can
only be used if the last block of the drive has not been already
allocated to a partition. If the last block has been included in a
partition, back up, repartion leaving at least one unused block at the
end of the drive, create the mirror, and restore."

Hmm, I suggest to disable tab expansion or do replacement in
Tidy based on your patch for the meantime. One thing I concerned
about is how outside elements like
 works. If it is
harmless in major www browsers (this should be treated as a
whitespace) and it can mitigate the issue, I think there is no
 problem with it.

I agree with migrating our documents to newer XML standards will
solve this in more consistent manner as Gabor said. I said it (and
SVN repo migration) would happen within last October but I could not
handle that nicely. Sorry for that, but it is now in progress. I
believe Tidy can be removed after that.

Do you mean that you are working on the XML migration of the www tree?
As we talked about it before, I have an almost ready version of the doc
tree but it needs merging and some last touches. However, the SVN
migration is a prerequisite for that.

I think we should rewrite this section not to create a malformed
partition table by configuring gmirror in some way. If all of
partitions are UFS, the following procedure should be safe:

  1. gmirror label gm0 /dev/da1, and edit /boot/loader.conf to load
     the kernel module.

  2. Reboot and check if gm0 is recognized even after that (just in
     case).

  3. Create partitions in /dev/mirror/gm0 based on ones in /dev/da0.
If capacity of /dev/da0 and /dev/da1 is the same as each other
gm0 should be slightly smaller by the last sector.

  4. Dump & restore each partition from /dev/da0* to /dev/mirror/gm0*.
Install a boot block if necessary.

  5. mount /dev/mirror/gm0s1a /mnt, and edit /mnt/etc/fstab to mount
gm0. Also, apply the same change to /etc/fstab in /dev/da0.

  6. Reboot and check if gm0 is mounted as the root partition.

  7. gmirror add gm0 /dev/da0, and wait for the rebuild.

The primary difference between the above and one in the handbook is
to use /dev/da1 for gm0 first. By doing this, both making a backup
of /dev/da0 and repartitioning before setting up the mirror
configuration can be done virtually. The step 3 may be complex in
some cases, but I personally think partitioning /dev/mirror/gm0 by
gpart based on the existing /dev/da0 is not so difficult.

Some further testing...

There are actually three versions of tidy: www/tidy, www/tidy-devel,
and www/tidy-lib. Although the docproj port installs the last, any can
be used.

Replacing tabs with before tidy is called is probably the most
compatible way. The attached patch does this with sed in the three
doc Makefiles where tidy is used: doc.docbook.mk, doc.html.mk,
doc.xml.mk.

How it actually works is either funny or appalling, depending on how you
look at it. sed replaces tabs with , then tidy translates the
back to tabs. Since this happens after the tabs-to-spaces code in
tidy, the output is a literal tab.

The Makefile changes work with any of the versions of tidy.

A sample of the Porter's Handbook produced with this patch:
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/porters/book.html

Firefox 9 on FreeBSD renders the Makefile examples perfectly.

(Firefox 9 in WINE does not render them correctly either with tabs or
spaces.)

Changes look good to me, but it is better to use something like this

 REINPLACE_TABS_CMD?=${SED} -i -e 's/	/\	/g'

in doc.common.mk (with some comments explaining this is a hack to
preserve literal tab characters) and use it in these three.

Revised patch attached (for real, this time). Only lightly tested but
no problems noticed.

On Windows XP, IE8 and Firefox 9 render the tabs in the new version
correctly.

There is another issue: PDFs. A PDF version with the patch above is at
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/porters/book.pdf.bz2

Actual tabs come out as a single space in the PDF. Compare that with
the unpatched tabs-to-spaces version at
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/book.pdf.bz2

...which still isn't quite right. Tabs at the beginning of lines are
removed. (That file has not been rebuilt in quite a while, either.)

I'm thinking the conversion will be different with DocBook XML, possibly
more correct. There are other problems with the current PDFs that might
also be cured.

As far as the other formats, book.txt looks somewhat okay, but I've
honestly never looked at the .txt or .rtf formats before.

I hope you're not still having problems. But if you are, it would be much
easier to say something useful if you post the full build log somewhere on
the web, not just snippets of it.

Ah, okay. It is due to the DSSSL processor. Jade and OpenJade do
not implement expand-tabs: characteristics in paragraph flow object
 class.

I think the attached patch should fix the issue in the PDF format.
 Could you test it?

Basing on my previous discussion with pjd@ I believe that this is the
correct way of setting up gmirror. Pawel, could you confirm please?

That helps a lot! Single tabs and multiple tabs are slightly different,
but it's close.
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/porters/tab1.png (good!)
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/porters/tab2.png (close)

http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/porters/tab3.png

Should be:
LIB_DEPENDS+= foo.0:${PORTSDIR}/devel/foo
CONFIGURE_ARGS+= --enable-foo

The second line '=' lands right before a tab stop, and the tab is
replaced with a single space.

Thanks!

PS: somehow I missed escaping the '#' in my patch to doc.common.mk,
revision attached.

How about the attached one? A bug that could cause an extra space
 was fixed.

How often are the non-HTML versions of the Handbook supposed to be
rebuilt?

The files in
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/
are pretty old. In fact, old enough that the PDF Handbook doesn't have
the new bsdinstall chapter needed for FreeBSD 9. The file dates are
April 16, 2011, which could actually be accurate.

What do you think about the tab replacement patches for doc/share/mk?
