However, it may be used to associate dirty VM pages with file system buffers and thus cause them to be flushed to physical media sooner rather than later. To the contrary, if a process does not call msync with MS_SYNC, the process has no way to verify that dirty pages are successfully written. Personally, I liken this to calling close(2) before exiting: while the system will attempt to flush pages, there is no guarantee that a mmapped file has been successfully written until after msync(_, _, MS_SYNC) has returned. To make this more significant, in FreeBSD 8.3-PRERELEASE, the bug described in kern/165923 will prevent dirty regions on an NFS-backed file from being flushed by the syncer in most common situations. Calling msync explicitly avoids the bug. However, even if that bug is fixed, an msync is still necessary to verify that the pages have been successfully written. Note that, as of 8.3-PRERELEASE, an msync is not sufficient to verify the write; cf kern/165927. If the syncer daemon flushes a file and fails before the process calls msync, then msync will wrongly report success. However, even if this is fixed, it's still appropriate to call msync. >How-To-Repeat: A demonstration of the necessity of msync can be found using the program from the "How-To-Repeat" program from kern/165923. If kern/165923 has not been fixed, then comment out "#define WAIT_FOR_SYNC". Run the program (using the setup described in that PR), then run "sync" on the client. Examine the backing-store file on the server (or a different client) using "od -X", and observe that the file is written if (and only if) DO_MSYNC is defined in the test program. If that bug has been fixed, and the different but related kern/165927 has also been fixed, then the reproduction instructions for kern/165927 will demonstrate the necessity of calling msync. If kern/165923 has been fixed but kern/165927 has not, then I don't have a straightforward reproduction scenario to demonstrate the usefulness of msync. (The former bug makes msync required for proper operation; the latter prevents it from being useful for error reporting.) >Fix: Remove the assertions in the mmap(2) and msync(2) man pages that indicate that msync is obsolete. If kern/165927 has not been fixed, it should be documented in the msync manpage. If kern/165923 has not been fixed, it may be useful to document it in the msync manpage, since it will appear to the user that a call to msync has no effect. I know from personal experience that searching for the right Logistics degree program can be a time consuming task and it is certainly very competitive. That is why I designed my Logistics degree guide to help students find information about programs across the country just by visiting one site. As you have a related site, would you mind helping me to connect prospective students with my site by adding it to your resources page of http://freebsd.isu.edu.tw/ja/ports/tcl84.html? Thank you so much for your time and any effort to add my link to your page! If you prefer to not receive another email about my degree resource site, please let me know! I consider the automatic FTS_NOCHDIR a semi-bug that should not be
relied on.

I agree with this, but as the be= havior is non-obvious I think it should be noted. =A0Perhaps this is more a= ppropriate for the BUGS section than the fts_open section?
=A0
If FTS_NOCHDIR is set, fts(3) runs slower a= nd is subject to
{PATH_MAX}. The latter would violate POSIX in various utilities.

this would mean that find -L is currently in viol= ation of POSIX?

I tried to allow FTS_LOGICAL without FTS_NOCHDIR a while ago, but while
it is conceptually possible, actually making it work is hard.

Is anyone currently looking into this?
=A0=

The open(".", O_RDONLY) can use O_SEARCH when it is added (for no= w,
O_EXEC works) so it only needs 'x' right not also 'r'.
<= /blockquote>

So this would then fall back to FTS_NOCHDIR= if `.' is not searchable?=A0

Yes.

Updated patch (attached) to = document the side-effect cases in BUGS section, available via http here:

Yes. The POSIX page about find is pretty clear on this issue:

% The find utility shall be able to descend to arbitrary depths in a
% file hierarchy and shall not fail due to path length limitations
% (unless a path operand specified by the application exceeds {PATH_MAX} % requirements)

so find should only fai= l if an argument sent already exceeds PATH_MAX, understood.

No. My patch (from over a year ago) is at
http://www.stack.nl/~jilles/unix/fts-logical-chdir-2.patch but I forgot
what severe breakage it causes.

Yes. This could be avoided by using functions like openat(2) and
fstatat(2) instead of changing the current directory, but only by
changing the API (because the current API requires fts(3) to furnish a
pathname that will access the object, not an fd and a pathname relative
to it).

It's just ssh that isn't working as documented; this may have changed for security reasons. The pserver method still works, so things aren't completely offline. If ssh access is no longer supported, it should be removed from the Handbook, but I can't be sure there isn't just a configuration change needed.
