Please keep Da Rock in the Cc: ==================================================================== Date: Mon, 02 Jan 2012 21:59:57 +1000 From: Da Rock To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: nss_ldap and the linuxulator I've just run into this snag again which I've resolved back in 7.x/8.1: the linuxulator cannot handle nss lookups from ldap. I ran a search for nss_ldap fedora 10 and simply extracted from the rpm the libnss_ldap*.so* in the usr/lib into the corresponding directory under /compat/linux. One then only has to copy or setup the ldap.conf in /compat/linux/etc/ and change /compat/linux/etc/nsswitch.conf so the it will check files and ldap as in the base. It works a charm when you have issues like the missus with acroread and others not working inexplicably. Run acroread from the command line will give you the clue: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id. This solution does fix this categorically. I hope this helps others, but I do have one question: why isn't this included in the ports already? I still haven't yet figured out cups and printer selection yet, but I have made some progress... :) Cheers From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 3 00:35:25 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F655106564A for ; Tue, 3 Jan 2012 00:35:25 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd-emulation@herveybayaustralia.com.au) Received: from mail.unitedinsong.com.au (mail.unitedinsong.com.au [150.101.178.33]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E543F8FC14 for ; Tue, 3 Jan 2012 00:35:24 +0000 (UTC) Received: from laptop1.herveybayaustralia.com.au (laptop1.herveybayaustralia.com.au [192.168.0.179]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mail.unitedinsong.com.au (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id E5C545C21 for ; Tue, 3 Jan 2012 10:30:20 +1000 (EST) Message-ID: <4F024866.4080206@herveybayaustralia.com.au> Date: Tue, 03 Jan 2012 10:14:30 +1000 From: Da Rock User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20111109 Thunderbird/7.0.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org References: <4f02928f.4lyjxv8bC6jOophQ%perryh@pluto.rain.com> In-Reply-To: <4f02928f.4lyjxv8bC6jOophQ%perryh@pluto.rain.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: nss_ldap and the linuxulator X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 03 Jan 2012 00:35:25 -0000 On 01/03/12 15:30, perryh@pluto.rain.com wrote: > Forwarding to emulation@, which is where the linuxulator gurus hang > out (AFAIK). Alex, I don't see any such message in the linux port. It mentions NIS only. I've also seen over time this question pops up and the only answer is to provide a "hack" that sets up passwd at boot or such. This is a quick and easy solution to the problem. As for the port: what's involved with that? It's not exactly something that needs updating regularly. I'd say just have it in ports for those that happen to need it. All it needs to do is copy the pam files to the usr/lib dir under linux and a message to remind the admin to set ldap.conf and nsswitch.conf. So, how do I go about getting it in there? I have the files, but I haven't exactly mastered the makefiles under ports as yet (or in general, for that matter... :( ). You can send-pr it (there's also a gtk version of it in ports, if you prefer some GUI tool). This way any ports committer can have a look at it. Alternatively you can provide it on a webpage and bug a/some committer(s) to download and commit it. Sending a mail to an appropriate mailinglist could help too, but normally you will get the response to send-pr it from the mailinglist. The first way makes sure your contribution is not lost, the second way works for some people, but they need to find a committer who has time and interest. Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports, and the reason and date that they have been scheduled for removal, are listed below. If no one has stepped forward before that time to propose a way to fix the problems (such as via a PR), the ports will be deleted. portname: graphics/linux-tiff description: TIFF library, Linux/i386 binary maintainer: emulation@FreeBSD.org status: FORBIDDEN deprecated because: expiration date: 2011-10-14 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=graphics&portname=linux-tiff portname: x11-toolkits/linux-pango description: Linux pango binary maintainer: emulation@FreeBSD.org status: FORBIDDEN deprecated because: expiration date: 2011-10-14 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=x11-toolkits&portname=linux-pango If this problem is one that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message.
