I believe that the extension pack is required to get bootcode for the emulated intel NICs, without which you can't PXE. VirtualBox can also emulate some PCNet (IIRC) NICs that do have bootcode built into VirtualBox itself, so make sure that you're using those. Giving Mac OS X more then one processor can result in a core dump. 2. DMG format support doesn't work, Mac says that such image cannot be read. But when I download this image to the virtual machine or open it from them network everything works. -- Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow. This is again a call for testers to get some feedback before we commit VirtualBox 4.2 to the portstree. If you already run VirtualBox 4.2.0 you should definitely update to 4.2.4 because they fixed quite a few serious bugs upstream. Our plan is still to commit 4.2 to the portstree as soon as FreeBSD 9.1 is out the door. If you are interested in helping with virtualbox maintenance and development or have noticed a bug you can easily find us on IRC. Please update devel/kBuild-devel before updating any of the virtualbox ports and ensure that your Kernel sources match your running kernel before building the virtualbox-ose-kmod port. Until it happens (and > it will probably not at least in FreeBSD10) VirtualBox will be > compiled with gcc 4.2 from base system. > No appology necessary, i understand what you mean. My point is, will it require gcc 4.2 from ports, or will it compile with a more up to date version of gcc, such as gcc 4.7. Thanks. So it's hard to find out what the problem is. I remember that I had some problems in the past after updating the kernel but I did not recompile cdrtools or dvd+rw-tools which caused all the atapi commands to strangely fail when trying to burn a DVD. VirtualBox also uses that tools so I'd recommend that you just rebuild those two and check if it helps. -- Bernhard Froehlich http://www.bluelife.at/ From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 31 00:26:08 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6A295767; Wed, 31 Oct 2012 00:26:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F4FA8FC14; Wed, 31 Oct 2012 00:26:07 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q9V0Q6xm098157; Tue, 30 Oct 2012 18:26:06 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) with ESMTP id q9V0Q6Md098154; Tue, 30 Oct 2012 18:26:06 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2012 18:26:06 -0600 (MDT) From: Warren Block To: =?ISO-8859-15?Q?Bernhard_Fr=F6hlich?= Subject: Re: VirtualBox: why there is no Passthrough checkbox on Storage screen? It failed to open /dev/xpt0 and silently ignored it. Function getDVDInfoFromCAM src/VBox/Main/src-server/freebsd/HostHardwareFreeBSD.cpp. Such error should not be ignored, since it causes confusion and questions like mine. My xpt0 has 0660 permissions as per Handbook 23.3.3: crw-rw---- 1 root operator 0, 97 Oct 29 01:15 /dev/xpt0 But my user wasn't in the group operator. So, no matter what permissions user and xpt0 file has, error should be issued by VirtualBox when the file can't be opened. You need to do make install as root because vbox does some internal checking that this is the case because of suid binaries. And you need to cleanup that directories per hand before installing 4.2.4. -- http://www.bluelife.at/ From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 31 07:35:17 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C6C1DF9A for ; Wed, 31 Oct 2012 07:35:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from yuri@rawbw.com) Received: from shell0.rawbw.com (shell0.rawbw.com [198.144.192.45]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE97C8FC0A for ; Wed, 31 Oct 2012 07:35:17 +0000 (UTC) Received: from eagle.yuri.org (stunnel@localhost [127.0.0.1]) (authenticated bits=0) by shell0.rawbw.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id q9V7ZGmR003519 for ; Wed, 31 Oct 2012 00:35:17 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from yuri@rawbw.com) Message-ID: <5090D4B4.3070006@rawbw.com> Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2012 00:35:16 -0700 From: Yuri User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20121023 Thunderbird/16.0.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: emulation@freebsd.org Subject: virtualbox-4.1.22: Burning DVD from the guest caused host dvd device loss Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2012 07:35:17 -0000 I shared dvd burner device /dev/cd0 with the windows server 2012 guest (using passthrough) and attempted to burn dvd from the guest using InfraRecorder program. In the process sound playing on the host was cycling several times for a prolonged periods of time. After a while all of a sudden InfraRecorder said that progress is 100%. But I don't believe disk was even touched for writing. Instead host log got many error messages, and eventually /dev/cd0 disappeared (!!!). Why those error messages weren't passed to the guest program? Did anybody actually succeed in burning dvds from guests? Is this supposed to work?
