I would like to change our GNOME 2 to MATE, so that way we can put GNOME 3 into ports tree quicker. Because there is nothing conflict to GNOME 3. Also much less complicate to not add too many CONFLICTS all over. Other day ago, it drove me crazy when I can't install some of foo because I have GNOME 3 installed. But.... There is a problem. Is MATE reliable? It's not exactly stable. When I visit to some specific website and it will causing Cinnamon crash for some odd reason. Some of applets are missing that I haven't check on it yet. Probably yet another path patch or something else. This weekend, I will try to clean up quick and put two ports in MC for anyone can play with Cinnamon. BTW: You will need nvidia-driver for it both gnome-shell and Cinnamon. Without it, you will be in the fallback mode instead of gnome-shell/Cinnamon. I think hicolor theme dependency should be added in djview4 instead of xdg-utils. But not many ports install in different theme? I don't have any problem if anyone object my approve and your patch however. > Cheers, > Mezz > > >> -- >> WBR, Boris Samorodov (bsam) >> FreeBSD Committer, http://www.FreeBSD.org The Power To Serve > > > -- > mezz.freebsd@gmail.com - mezz@FreeBSD.org > FreeBSD GNOME Team > http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/ - gnome@FreeBSD.org --=20 mezz.freebsd@gmail.com - mezz@FreeBSD.org FreeBSD GNOME Team http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/ - gnome@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 17 04:36:37 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97A71106566C; Tue, 17 Apr 2012 04:36:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from Cy.Schubert@komquats.com) Received: from idcmail-mo1so.shaw.ca (idcmail-mo1so.shaw.ca [24.71.223.10]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 538798FC0C; Tue, 17 Apr 2012 04:36:37 +0000 (UTC) Received: from pd2ml3so-ssvc.prod.shaw.ca ([10.0.141.148]) by pd2mo1so-svcs.prod.shaw.ca with ESMTP; 16 Apr 2012 22:36:36 -0600 X-Cloudmark-SP-Filtered: true X-Cloudmark-SP-Result: v=1.1 cv=W+ZrOcpwHTeQLvZQ9vbIxXRdvbK5p6H2/T6SuQCN924= c=1 sm=1 a=QrugwKR0C_UA:10 a=wAGQQ9Az6v0A:10 a=BLceEmwcHowA:10 a=ICAaq7hcmGcA:10 a=8nJEP1OIZ-IA:10 a=IbtKDeXwb2+SRU442/pi3A==:17 a=6I5d2MoRAAAA:8 a=8VpDeP3kAAAA:8 a=BWvPGDcYAAAA:8 a=jgYSVEYdIPdOrUXdjFoA:9 a=pYlswfgFLQ8PYKlpOnoA:7 a=wPNLvfGTeEIA:10 a=uar3UI-X7uIA:10 a=SV7veod9ZcQA:10 a=V7tsTZBp22UA:10 a=WqTdpsd_Yjk3zk-U:21 a=uDgZQNv0WMhHAVPE:21 a=HpAAvcLHHh0Zw7uRqdWCyQ==:117 Received: from unknown (HELO spqr.komquats.com) ([96.50.7.119]) by pd2ml3so-dmz.prod.shaw.ca with ESMTP; 16 Apr 2012 22:36:36 -0600 Received: from slippy.cwsent.com (slippy [10.1.1.91]) by spqr.komquats.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id D54CFD6; Mon, 16 Apr 2012 21:36:35 -0700 (PDT) Received: from slippy (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by slippy.cwsent.com (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q3H4aZ3v007188; Mon, 16 Apr 2012 21:36:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Cy.Schubert@komquats.com) Message-Id: <201204170436.q3H4aZ3v007188@slippy.cwsent.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.7.2 01/07/2005 with nmh-1.3 From: Cy Schubert X-os: FreeBSD X-Sender: cy@cwsent.com X-URL: http://www.komquats.com/ To: Jeremy Messenger In-Reply-To: Message from Jeremy Messenger of "Mon, 16 Apr 2012 20:21:52 CDT." It looks like Gnome2, but still does not provide real Gnome2 capabilities for customization. Like focus follow pointer. The removal of the ability to make behave like I want it to. I hope MATE develops into a stable platform or I may go to something else...maybe back to fvwm2. It's sad that after almost 20 years, it is still better at positioning new windows than anything I have used since. But we have produced lots and lots of eye candy. -- R. If I understand this correctly then smth like INSTALL_DEPENDS may DTRT? > What if application want to install in the different theme? This is > where xdg-utils installs wrong dependency, which it should be taken > care of upper level (ie: djview4). I'm not sure if djview4 installs a different scheme. It installs it's icons, desktop file at a non-standard directory (this is done at current djview4 port) and than those icons and desktop files should be "registered" -- i.e. should be copied to a standard directory (this is the part missing at the current djview4 port). But registering is aborted because a standard directory is missing. > The xdg-icon-resource really should have create directories. You mean "If the directory does not exist the xdg-..."? I think that the directory is not created since there is no _one_ standard. I.e. /usr/, /usr/local/, /opt/, etc. are all different among unixes and linuxes. > I think > the xdg-utils stuff are a bit flawed. I got acquainted to xdg-utils for the fist time so do not have a strong opinion. > But..... The xdg-utils isn't wide use, so I don't really care at this > moment to have xdg-utils depends on hicolor-icon-theme. It's unlike we > will have application that want xdg-icon-resource installs in > different theme. Well, this is too hard for my English to parse. ;-) The goal -- to get an icon menu (at my fluxbox wm) after djview4 is installed. The overview -- the port installs all needed file but does not run a command to register it's attributes to an icon, a desktop database. OK, I did it. At my workstation all was OK. But testing at a tinderbox resulted with error. [1] Further investigation showed that a directory is missing. That directory at my workstation was installed by hicolor-icon-theme. So we have two ways. Either depends upon hicolor-icon-theme or create that directory while installing xdg-utils. BTW, maybe xdg-hier may be committed to create needed system-wide (unlike user's) directories? [1] After committing the path to xdg-utils I've got a new error for djview4 installing: ----- Run /usr/local/share/djvu/djview4/desktop/register-djview-menu install to register the djview3 menu entries. xdg-desktop-menu: No writable system menu directory found. *** Error code 3 ----- The full log is here: https://redports.org//~bsam/20120418194919-96537-20561/djview-4.8_1.log xdg-desktop-menu in system mode uses /usr/local/share/desktop-directories. Which directory is standard for desktop entries for FreeBSD? I mean not gnome, not kde, etc. but actually FreeBSD. As for me I use fluxbox as a wm. Sure I can create that directory while installing djview4, but I rather not to. -- WBR, Boris Samorodov (bsam) FreeBSD Committer, http://www.FreeBSD.org The Power To Serve From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 20 06:16:44 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: gnome@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F11C01065691; Fri, 20 Apr 2012 06:16:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bapt@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DDCF98FC15; Fri, 20 Apr 2012 06:16:44 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q3K6Gih1060005; Fri, 20 Apr 2012 06:16:44 GMT (envelope-from bapt@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from bapt@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q3K6GiFZ060003; Fri, 20 Apr 2012 06:16:44 GMT (envelope-from bapt) Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2012 06:16:44 GMT Message-Id: <201204200616.q3K6GiFZ060003@freefall.freebsd.org> To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org From: Baptiste Daroussin X-send-pr-version: 3.113 X-GNATS-Notify: Cc: gnome@freebsd.org Subject: [PATCH] x11-toolkits/py-gnome2: 555 -> 755 for doc directories X-BeenThere: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2012 06:16:45 -0000 >Submitter-Id: current-users >Originator: Baptiste Daroussin >Organization: >Confidential: no >Synopsis: [PATCH] x11-toolkits/py-gnome2: 555 -> 755 for doc directories >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Category: ports >Class: change-request >Release: FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT amd64 >Environment: System: FreeBSD azathoth.lan 10.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT #0 r233418M: Sat Mar 24 13:45:31 CET >Description: py-gnome2 install EG_DST_DIR as 0555 but py-gnome-desktop do install it as mkdir aka 0755, which confuse pointyhat when building pkgng packages: see http://pointyhat-west.isc.freebsd.org/errorlogs/amd64-errorlogs/e.9-pkgng.20120419221037.pointyhat-west/py27-gnome-desktop-2.32.0_1.log A first fix could be to set all the directory to 0755 which after all make sense imho. just for you information ${TAR} -C ${EG_SRC_DIR} -cf - . | ${TAR} -C ${EG_DST_DIR} -xf - can be replaced by: cd ${EG_SRC_DIR}; pax -rw . ${EG_DST_DIR} This will be faster normally, but py-gnome is already fast, so not really needed :) Port maintainer (gnome@FreeBSD.org) is cc'd. In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions. The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 7.x/8.x/9.x/-current with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: x11/gnome-shell broken because: Doesn't build build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=x11&portname=gnome-shell If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD. Congratulations, guys! I've been waiting for this for a while and I'm sure many will join me in thanking all of those that have put so much effort into making it happen! Embarrassingly, I just sent the list a message about the need to run xorg-devel for many things (like Intel KMS) and how it was not in ports. I hit "Send" and this message showed up. Any idea about when/if Intel KMS might make it out of test mode? (I know, I should let you enjoy getting this done before asking for more.) -- R. Unfortunately, the intel KMS driver will only work on FreeBSD 9(RELENG|STABLE) or 10/HEAD users. Older version of FreeBSD will not be supported. Intel users will need to patch their source manually with Konstantin?s KMS kernel patch to get the newer chips to work. Please carefully read UPDATING entry. Changes: - libdrm 2.4.31 (including KMS support) - mesa 7.11.2 - xorg-server 1.10.6 - a lot of new Graphic Drivers. You should know that Cinnamon is a young project and they are working on add/fix features. You can make request at their place. > I hope MATE develops into a stable platform Me too. They are going to port MATE to GTK+3 later. It's in their roadmap. http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/roadmap Create MATE port should be very easy by repocopy from bsd.gnome.mk to bsd.mate.mk and modify in bsd.port.mk, then repocopy a lot of ports that have been renamed from MATE folks. Then some small tweaks in Makefile/pkg-plist and a few files/* too. I think it will be easy (a weekend or a bit more days worth of work). I couldn't put both in MC, because it will not fetch from github.com's tag. I haven't figure out how to make the fetch works. The github's tag stuff has some weird redirect. I bet the wget will working better than fetch. For now, you will have to download the distfiles and put those in /usr/ports/distfiles/gnome3 by manual. Here's two ports, x11/cinnamon and x11-wm/muffin. http://people.freebsd.org/~mezz/shar/cinnamon.shar http://people.freebsd.org/~mezz/shar/muffin.shar Download the distfiles: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/tags (click on TAR.GZ) https://github.com/linuxmint/muffin/tags (click on TAR.GZ) > BTW: You will need nvidia-driver for it both gnome-shell and Cinnamon. > Without it, you will be in the fallback mode instead of > gnome-shell/Cinnamon. The new Xorg has been committed. Someone should try new Xorg with gnome-shell or cinnamon to see if it will better or not. I have no idea though. The share/desktop-directories is a standard directory for many different desktops (ie: GNOME, KDE, etc). It's pretty much as same as with share/icons. It's why I said that xdg-utils is flawed for not create those directory, because it is an installation tool.
