I've installed other operating systems on here before (such as Debian) without difficulty, but I can't get FreeBSD to install properly from the installation CDs. I tried this earlier in the year and people on the FreeBSD forums suggested that this was a known issue and that using old releases of FreeBSD might work better. Here's a link to the FreeBSD forum where I originally asked the question: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=28615 I've tried now: - FreeBSD 9.0-RC3 - FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE - FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE - FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE In each case, I've verified the hashes to ensure the discs were downloaded and burned correctly. I burned the FreeBSD-x.x-ia64-RELEASE-disc1.iso to CD and booted. What I get each time is: FreeBSD/ia64 EFI boot, Revision 3.1 Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf /boot/kernel/kernel data=0xfef1f8+0x82710 syms=[0x8+0x0xb1120+0x8+0xa62a9] \ Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or any other key for command prompt. Booting [/boot/kernel/kernel]... Entering /boot/kernel/kernel at 0x9ffc000000010500... At that point, it either hangs indefinitely or does a hard reset after a few seconds. No matter which version of FreeBSD I try to install, I've never been able to get past the "Entering /boot/kernel/kernel at ..." Has anyone come across this issue before? Any help would be appreciated. Any help would be appreciated. Probably not your issue, but make sure you update the firmware: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=82069&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=82067&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=54 (although it looks like HP haven't updated firmware for this box for years.) and reset MP before booting. Resetting MP helped me many times, although I never encountered this particular issue. -- Anton Shterenlikht Room 2.6, Queen's Building Mech Eng Dept Bristol University University Walk, Bristol BS8 1TR, UK Tel: +44 (0)117 331 5944 Fax: +44 (0)117 929 4423 From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 22 18:59:51 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7F1891065674 for ; Fri, 22 Jun 2012 18:59:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from emeric.maschino@gmail.com) Received: from mail-wg0-f50.google.com (mail-wg0-f50.google.com [74.125.82.50]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 12CD48FC22 for ; Fri, 22 Jun 2012 18:59:50 +0000 (UTC) Received: by wgbds11 with SMTP id ds11so1987705wgb.31 for ; Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:59:50 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :content-type; bh=yzLZAt2eYhapWYWKFQ+TFr+TbcleqZ7TNqyeQunPx4A=; b=pYZcKBnHYcTVGWT+tbiwNABBUvvO47/GQArXbJprMpQMbv1LVY564LZYB1P05YB5Ve jLDgdktSR571qdZkTlLz+VLlqXcpmuefmHvOHP/SZcVAdgsY25lIlS3CwP0C1wy4i3pL R6YB9RhuT8Isg7IPtzgTs9CjSTuyQ+BCKIbxRrgMZDsscvomceve0FNFOT8j8MLjhLkk ESZoYmnzEmu7N8dIobQ6+CTe1BYOLf9AwJPuJ+DTGSTXWzu5zRz7aetnGPzneXoRHORW zeK6sUJHGTiojdoJ7vOyjnyWfSsA7/lVbc1wPMAji0Ck8BEoDHruOGRsfVepimFLQkCr REiQ== MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.180.87.232 with SMTP id bb8mr7255977wib.0.1340391588232; Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:59:48 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.223.60.13 with HTTP; Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:59:48 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <20120622103426.GA98040@mech-cluster241.men.bris.ac.uk> References: <4FE38863.9020303@wizardlike.ca> <20120622103426.GA98040@mech-cluster241.men.bris.ac.uk> Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2012 20:59:48 +0200 Message-ID: From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?=C9meric_Maschino?= To: Mike Burrell , freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Cc: Subject: Re: Installing on zx6000 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the IA-64 List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2012 18:59:51 -0000 Hi, Same problem here. I didn't get an answer when reported back in May (http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ia64/2012-May/003236.html). My zx6000 has the latest firmware. From what I understand, this issue is specific to Madison CPUs. It's not clear to me whether this is the same issue (or whether the thinks you linked to are all the same issue), though it definitely could be. In the post I made in January I mentioned that I'd successfully installed other things (specifically Debian and HP-UX) without any problems at all, so I'm inclined to believe this is a problem with either FreeBSD's GENERIC kernel or FreeBSD's EFI loader. Mostly my frustration at this point is trying to determine whether this is a known issue or not. I guess I'll have to live with Debian for a while.... Mike
