Put it next to a Mac and watch their faces. It seems to me that many people have forgotten how light a user interface can be. All is available with one click without searching. This work gave FreeBSD a real push. I hope that the integration becomes smooth to enable us to get more users. One other question. What battery life time do you get out of what kind of battery? The ThinkPads have always done well with open source operating systems, including FreeBSD. The things to watch out for are: 1) What wireless chip do they use? Even within the same model they can switch wireless chips. 2) What video chip is used. This is an endless source of problems for open source systems. I've rarely had problems with other components, but I will say that I never use sound on my laptop so that is an area where I don't have any experience. Same as above, but two spindles (which I still like) except: Wired network card is Intel 82579LM supported in head, 9, and 8.3 Wireless can be selected to use the Intel card at no extra cost, but default is a RealTek that is not supported SOME Fn keys work and others may be redefined to work. Brightness in particular does not work and I have not been able to get it to work. ThinkLight does work. Backlight can be adjusted with the SET by command using the acpi_call port. This includes trurnig off and on. Mine boots fine from GPT disk. (My FreeBSD boots from the GPT disk.) I am really surprised the X220 fails on them. Sound works, but you need to change a couple of pins to get the audio jack working. Add the following to /boot/loader.conf: # Load the sound driver snd_hda_load="YES" # and setup headphones # Out : speaker + headphones hint.hdac.0.cad0.nid25.config="as=1 seq=15" # In : mic + external mic hint.hdac.0.cad0.nid35.config="as=2" hint.hdac.0.cad0.nid27.config="as=2 seq=15" I have not tried to use the HDMI, so I have no idea about it. -- R.
