With nvidia, you get vdpau which can hardware decode almost everything I have ever tried - H264, x264, MPEG2, WMV, webm etc. vdpau is supported by mplayer, vlc, ffmpeg, xbmc, myth ... You do not need extremely powerful cards for this either, any onboard will work well, the card I use is a GT 610, which is passively cooled, and can decode H264 @ 3840x2160 (4k) - obviously with the closed source drivers from nvidia. A system built around something like the ZOTAC Z68ITX-B-E would be an ideal FreeBSD mini ITX HTPC - not exactly the cheap end of the spectrum, but very compact. I don't know that the wifi would be supported. But I will try intel ivy bridge graphics, the new kms infrastructure should enable smooth hd playback with a lot less power then nvidia. The vaapi driver landet oct 25 in ports: http://www.freshports.org/multimedia/libva-intel-driver and I would hope it actually works ;) I don't need this to be running right away, I could tolereate some tinkering. Support for it is very mature & stable at this point. VAAPI isn't nearly as well supported. Mini-itx systems are just fine too. I have a mix of mini-itx (ion and ion2) htpcs as well as a few matx and atx. Of them all I prefer mini-itx the most because of the really small footprint, very low power consumption, no noise/fans/moving parts, etc. Who doesn't like a totally silent htpc that's the size of a nintendo wii? Yep, I think VLC has the best VAAPI support, so if you use VLC for everything it should be OK - not having used VAAPI I can't say for sure though. mplayer does not support VAAPI - there were some initial patches provided which are abandonware as far as I can see, and the devs do not appreciate questions about it - I think they do not like that there is this VAAPI tree which builds 'mplayer' but is missing several thousands bug fixes that are in mplayer tip. Be warned that when you use devices like the Raspberry Pi, that although are capable of hardware decoding, can be unstable and/or under-powered for tasks that are not decoding. I have a Raspberry Pi and XBMC does in fact run on it. However, the osd is very slow and certainly not worthy of daily use (in my opinion). Obviously the more patient of a person and willing to tolerate a laggy osd you are, the more acceptable a Raspberry Pi and similar devices may be for you. A gpu-less framebuffer is fine. (No videogaming) PCIe At least 2560x1440 (for 27" displays) (analog can be lower resolution) 2560x1600 (30" displays) would be better 4096x2560 (4K displays) would be even better At least 24 bit color (more is better) Work as console for firmware and OS. Must work with X11. Bonus points for multiple heads (e.g. 2 digital + 1 analog) Bonus points for each type of port supported (dvi, hdmi, displayport, vga, s-video, ...) Bonus points for video decoder that is documented and fully supported by the BSDs. Minor bonus points for a small, energy efficient gpu that is documented and fully supported by the BSDs. Bonus points for not even needing a heatsink. Major minus points for power hungry monsters with "jet engine" fans and extra power cables, double-wide, ... Binary-only is unacceptable, must have source. (Can be BSDL, GPL, ...) Bonus points for supporting sync-on-green. Decent quality. Full height is ok, doesn't need to be low profile. The closest you will get is a card with an older AMD/ATI chipset (Radeon HD 2xxx or 4xxx) - the newer ones need KMS (which isn't supported on FreeBSD). AMD did release full programming specs for some ATI chipsets - you'll need to check the AMD website for the specific card. Unfortunately, they don't have ECC for onboard RAM and so won't be acceptable to you. The rest of your requirements are a matter of the specific card and they change very rapidly. >A gpu-less framebuffer is fine. Your only choices are nvidia, intel and ati. nvidia are closed source (or bad performance) so excluded from your list. Most modern ATI cards are not supported by FreeBSD (patches welcome), and all the older ones that are supported probably do not support the high resolutions you are after, since consumer monitors with WQHD/WQXGA resolutions did not exist when those cards were designed. With ivy bridge intel graphics you should be able to support at least one WQHD/WQXGA screen over display port (not HDMI), and WUXGA on the others. What ports and what features are available depends on what CPU you use, and what connectors the manufacturer puts on the motherboard. Intel should also support VAAPI, which may provide the video acceleration you want. I've never used it, it's (apparently) supported by VLC, but not by mplayer. I suggest you download 9.1 and install that instead of upgrading from 8.x. -- Joel From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Dec 15 16:06:16 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DEA28BD0 for ; Sat, 15 Dec 2012 16:06:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) Received: from nm2-vm0.bullet.mail.ukl.yahoo.com (nm2-vm0.bullet.mail.ukl.yahoo.com [217.146.183.226]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 257FD8FC12 for ; Sat, 15 Dec 2012 16:06:15 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [217.146.183.181] by nm2.bullet.mail.ukl.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 15 Dec 2012 16:03:24 -0000 Received: from [217.146.183.125] by tm12.bullet.mail.ukl.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 15 Dec 2012 16:03:24 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] by smtp102.mail.ukl.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 15 Dec 2012 16:03:24 -0000 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=rocketmail.com; s=s1024; t=1355587404; bh=oXPYwHV4o5wx7YRshrA3j1Mnm93ZDw/VyQzaRsxVS/Q=; h=X-Yahoo-Newman-Id:X-Yahoo-Newman-Property:X-YMail-OSG:X-Yahoo-SMTP:Received:Message-ID:Subject:From:To:Date:In-Reply-To:References:Content-Type:X-Mailer:Mime-Version:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=TxpNs2n3lbXJFuT43ih++yFaANHfAA1HdWsbpynYrrvYhYvyM5IgSGworWtJ+RLiS9FCDPaXG5Zu1HxCRdvo8HppS0AbbFDReRCQ27BrI5goDmfb4VYqvm5ash8DNKzZk2SRhTsfyoFJkwpDTPKbmqzwJQ/mxWoFJKd/nWrhztk= X-Yahoo-Newman-Id: 246835.74407.bm@smtp102.mail.ukl.yahoo.com X-Yahoo-Newman-Property: ymail-3 X-YMail-OSG: cjyT7lwVM1lU3_c0yPJZdnIPTz69jvOpw2FpvOPX9oWcbIO lM_EY4m_K19wqzdxvf4qzt0kRHoZsh4msLE1ow4Yk5fHj2nJZiIr0v05_BVO IZrESYlYiuqfsWQKWfN.SXBtXNKJ5eL..N2_Wb3jgyBojmbT2DUu_iovZeic hc_mAFtdvc.9lpSq7F0OptKrvzHmVcOZZrXUzJw2x255qcGu9L8DNusYxXRH z464Sp7Gcsdke7LG8x_BRa_uIvCAtBX_6J4U1jsj7vx316qos5QlbKjBII4i WEezF.niB0rXChNGgf3dPOWOjmbQY.jSVtjJHTY5sLX8bwdM3oktq7ESQwP4 QmSBvRJK9Gl.xGyWYeZgUoGz7YZbwkzKlmAjGOX9IHyJ6iM3bsVYBwjun4m1 8zbq1ihKb.K.jkF8_xyYdhuF0MgD3jmoPYDka9UN579A- X-Yahoo-SMTP: BeMCPs2swBABTJ3kAeEiC_hE0mz8jRexLddJfD8pI2j32fOacjBmXg-- Received: from [85.182.16.242] (ralf.mardorf@85.182.16.242 with login) by smtp102.mail.ukl.yahoo.com with SMTP; 15 Dec 2012 08:03:24 -0800 PST Message-ID: <1355587403.2687.61.camel@q> Subject: Re: snd_hdspe: No such file or directory From: Ralf Mardorf To: "freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org" Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2012 17:03:23 +0100 In-Reply-To: <20121215101512.GC20342@jd.benders.se> References: <1355536009.52929.YahooMailNeo@web172405.mail.ir2.yahoo.com> <20121215101512.GC20342@jd.benders.se> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Mailer: Evolution 3.6.0-0ubuntu3 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2012 16:06:16 -0000 On Sat, 2012-12-15 at 11:15 +0100, Joel Dahl wrote: > On 15-12-2012 1:46, Mardorf Ralf wrote: > > Hi :) > > > > do I have to build a kernel or can I install another pre-build kernel or upgrade everything? > > Is this a freshly installed system? I started with a FreeBSD 9.0 DVD, but there where issues with partitioning (it simply didn't work), that's why I chose PC-BSD 8.2. IOW installing FreeBSD on my machine isn't that simple. Simply building a new kernel would be to much hassle? On Linux building a kernel is very easy, just a little bit time consuming, it takes around 90 minutes for the compiler, but I could use the computer without issues during compiling, to do other work (but I don't do it, when compiling such). OTOH isn't it possible just to build the driver for the current kernel? What are the drawbacks of upgrading everything? Is there some wicked transition? Regards, Ralf
