I'm trying to install FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE on my PowerBook G3 Pismo, but every time I boot the CD (which matches the MD5 hash, first thing I checked...) it never finishes booting. The last couple of messages on screen are below, then the cd stops spinning: gem0: 10kB RX FIFO, 4kB TX FIFO gem0: Ethernet address: (mac address...) sc0 on nexus0 sc0: Unknown <16 virtual consoles, flags=0x300> My thinking at first was possibly DMA trouble with the ATA controller, because I've noticed some people have had some issues on PowerMacs, but disabling DMA (set hw.ata.atapi_dma=0) didn't change anything. I'm at a loss as to what to do, any help would be appreciated. I'm hoping to breathe some fresh life into this laptop. Also, what is the layout of the NetBSD CD? The PPC(64) CDs have a HFS boot partition that is recognized by the Apple-Mac firmware version of Open Firmware/Boot. You may want to contact the Open Firmware mailing list and ask for the boot commands. Upon selecting "Install Devices" from SMS, and then selecting t= he=20 CD-ROM, SMS doesn't recognize the CD as bootable and doesn't list the OS=20 (FreeBSD). With Debian and NetBSD it finds that the CD is bootable and list= s=20 the title. I think this is because they both use yaboot, and I don't think the FreeBSD= =20 uses it. Can you confirm this? Debian uses one CD for all PPC with both 32bit and=20 64bit kernels on it. =2D- Lyubomir Grigorov (bgalakazam) --nextPart2521145.q4h2r3rchX Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.18 (FreeBSD) iQIcBAABAgAGBQJPC3whAAoJEDmxOw4kunU9+a8QAIgWGHArEG1HPPYrzCSe03Tk chyTr+2xTKc01DXwbwFn216m/rCxpC5kJUpRFZo/cqmCaLpuQ2BSnGLIClFB2yP+ gTAPHj0xhSvdBMpwel0RBAjwNys1qiL0CpA4xVdWe6xnVqXFFCdv3l7ou9W0qwRF 3KARJSSjEBDU0wM2ZH1dds/pc0PPPVeVejz/hWw+IHrUMxSMokyWTB2w9Ckw4aXh KaUEJl1s9KjYHBnPLRMwcbWUrA4adbZcrEUVXOMkFkNtCT/mNXvVwvflg/idR0Oc zHuBnTaj2fu4ygaCrv8FmOD1lcy6u0s1obd7iWs6g3mCGjsOiItx/epZNs4rY/Sd iZ7LW/EcG1J9oy96dre2hl1gXDmwzc80Eut4oDjc3hUfV5vagXGymxWm3Bg1Cup/ WCAzfL9dOLnO9+vPbYdzlmbNkaCpjF6qtCIQknBrxldC4A2iBPV8WP4buw2NMJGe KXOtKynmc6ET257pNMHjHPcp1PRjKUOAvIWWJGxRk3XvX+t+m/VZWk/d7Sc3UPrv Jode31WFnFhfuO81shiYNUs9OcRfFPDd6LBefENISx/C9y5/+GIVnt28uUbM1pBh RT1m5KjpaRZHLgtZP8SRA/aDelHySmk6Czx1lrgARtgylg3p3H2DOwB8Wni1dLHY yYLjxubAGzs6/izc9I54 =L3K/ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart2521145.q4h2r3rchX-- From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 9 23:54:28 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F233F106566B for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 23:54:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freebsd.org) Received: from argol.doit.wisc.edu (argol.doit.wisc.edu [144.92.197.212]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C010B8FC0A for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 23:54:28 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; format=flowed Received: from avs-daemon.smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) id <0LXK00F002ER4L00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Mon, 09 Jan 2012 17:54:27 -0600 (CST) Received: from wanderer.tachypleus.net (i3-user-nat.icecube.wisc.edu [128.104.255.12]) by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) with ESMTPSA id <0LXK0048O2EQRS30@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Mon, 09 Jan 2012 17:54:27 -0600 (CST) Date: Mon, 09 Jan 2012 17:54:26 -0600 From: Nathan Whitehorn In-reply-to: <201201091545.37129.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Message-id: <4F0B7E32.4030807@freebsd.org> X-Spam-Report: AuthenticatedSender=yes, SenderIP=128.104.255.12 X-Spam-PmxInfo: Server=avs-12, Version=5.6.1.2065439, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.376379, Antispam-Data: 2012.1.9.234514, SenderIP=128.104.255.12 References: <201201050014.57718.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> <201201091545.37129.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20111213 Thunderbird/8.0 Subject: Re: POWER3 / IBM 7028-6E1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 09 Jan 2012 23:54:29 -0000 On 01/09/12 17:45, Lyubomir Grigorov wrote: >> I don't know what you and Nathan talked about; but, did you try the PPC(32) >> or PPC64? > I tried the 32bit PPC, as Nathan suggested. According to the IcedTea build requirements, a working JDK is required to build IcedTea, which makes it a chicken-and-egg problem. So having vmkit, which should work on ppc now that gcj is building on ppc, should allow bootstrapping IcedTea as well. - Justin From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 10 03:04:29 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AC1A91065670 for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2012 03:04:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lyubomir@grigorovl.eu) Received: from gateway14.websitewelcome.com (gateway14.websitewelcome.com [67.18.7.4]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6EE8F8FC15 for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2012 03:04:29 +0000 (UTC) Received: by gateway14.websitewelcome.com (Postfix, from userid 5007) id 2BD001A1D4730; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 21:04:28 -0600 (CST) Received: from gator1718.hostgator.com (gator1718.hostgator.com [184.173.215.146]) by gateway14.websitewelcome.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1E3C61A1D470C for ; Mon, 9 Jan 2012 21:04:28 -0600 (CST) Received: from [75.36.214.55] (port=61125 helo=neonz.localnet) by gator1718.hostgator.com with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1RkS0h-0007yw-So; Mon, 09 Jan 2012 21:04:28 -0600 From: Lyubomir Grigorov To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org, nwhitehorn@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 9 Jan 2012 19:04:21 -0800 User-Agent: KMail/1.13.7 (FreeBSD/9.0-RC3; KDE/4.7.3; amd64; ; ) References: <201201050014.57718.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> <201201091545.37129.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> <4F0B7E32.4030807@freebsd.org> In-Reply-To: <4F0B7E32.4030807@freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="nextPart14419560.kNozynvhBX"; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <201201091904.27486.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - gator1718.hostgator.com X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - freebsd.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [47 12] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - grigorovl.eu X-BWhitelist: no X-Source: X-Source-Args: X-Source-Dir: X-Source-Sender: adsl-75-36-214-55.dsl.pltn13.sbcglobal.net (neonz.localnet) [75.36.214.55]:61125 X-Source-Auth: lyubomir+grigorovl.eu X-Email-Count: 2 X-Source-Cap: YWxha2F6YW07YWxha2F6YW07Z2F0b3IxNzE4Lmhvc3RnYXRvci5jb20= Cc: Subject: Re: POWER3 / IBM 7028-6E1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2012 03:04:29 -0000 --nextPart14419560.kNozynvhBX Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable >Likely it needs some additional magic for your machine. IIRC one should be able to get the openjdk7 port working on powerpc with the Zero VM at least. We've at one point had Zero working on both FreeBSD/amd64 and FreeBSD/sparc64 and it has previously worked on Leopard/ppc at some point. The big problem, as usual, is the bootstrapping. I'll be the first to admit that is probably much easier with gcj. So having vmkit, which should work on > ppc now that gcj is building on ppc, should allow bootstrapping > IcedTea as well. You can manually bootstrap without a working JDK, but it is pretty painful. Basically you need a system with a working JDK (e.g. amd64 or i386) and the powerpc system with a shared NFS mount of the source. You make your bootstrap JDK then be a set of scripts that ssh's to the system with the working JDK on it and executes the command while all the C++/C compilation steps run locally on the powerpc box. Once you've bootstrapped like that you can then use the JDK you get from that step as the bootstrap JDK next time without the NFS set up. I bootstrapped sparc64 something like that. Getting gcj running is definitely easier. I was under the impression that you could bootstrap IcedTea with a mix of gcj, ejc and a VM like jamvm and GNU classpath. I could easily be mistaken though. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 10 13:54:54 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C19FA1065670 for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2012 13:54:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd-ppc@dino.sk) Received: from loki.netlab.sk (ns3.netlab.sk [84.245.65.11]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E1248FC13 for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2012 13:54:53 +0000 (UTC) Received: from atom.dino.sk (fw1.dino.sk [84.245.95.252]) (AUTH: LOGIN milan, TLS: TLSv1/SSLv3,128bits,AES128-SHA) by loki.netlab.sk with ESMTPSA; Tue, 10 Jan 2012 14:54:02 +0100 id 00033CFA.4F0C42FA.00011525 Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2012 14:54:43 +0100 From: Milan Obuch To: lyubomir@grigorovl.eu Message-ID: <20120110145443.66d18f78@atom.dino.sk> In-Reply-To: <201201092009.13252.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> References: <201201050014.57718.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> <4F0B7E32.4030807@freebsd.org> <201201091904.27486.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> <201201092009.13252.lyubomir@grigorovl.eu> X-Mailer: Claws Mail 3.8.0 (GTK+ 2.24.6; amd64-portbld-freebsd8.2) Face: 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 X-Face: ak5rwz4-aUa>hPFZlcg,bXxn.(TN}e9DGFrKU\.i_'B[&5=pAd9o"j)5VSUYW:BRQG#^42Ev$Il|; Ztn=,C X-Operating-System: FreeBSD/amd64 8.2-STABLE Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: POWER3 / IBM 7028-6E1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2012 13:54:54 -0000 On Mon, 9 Jan 2012 20:09:08 -0800 Lyubomir Grigorov wrote: > > I then threw in some random commands at the OF prompt: > > I also tried these with no success: > > 0 > boot cd,\boot\loader Unable to use memory at load-base > ok > 0 > boot cd:,\boot\loader Unable to use memory at load-base > ok > 0 > boot cd:,\ppc\chrp\loader Unable to use memory at load-base > ok > 0 > boot cd:\ppc\chrp\loader Unable to use memory at load-base > ok > 0 > boot &device;:&partition;,\ppc\chrp\loader Unable to use memory > at load- base > ok > > So I suppose some verbosity is needed to see why the initial try > fails. > All your commands are failing for the same reason - load-base points to memory which boot command can't use. Write printenv to find where (actually you will see more variables, not just load-base, and both current and default values), and eventually with setenv load-base 0xabcdefgh you could change it. As I know nothing about your hardware (actually being new to powerpc platform too, working with some Apple hardware a bit), I have no other recommendations for you. There could be even some memory problem, but this is just a wild uneducated guess.
