I've tested the i386 flavour on a FreeBSD VM. It boots and successfully loads ums.ko. Aside from that, a very similar setup has been tested for i386 and amd64 on Debian GNU/kFreeBSD, for several months. I'm unable to test the other architectures. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or what to try next and am hoping that someone can help me get going again. There are links to various diagnostic material near the end of this message. I've been trying to make a Griffin radioSHARK USB AM/FM radio work. My long term goal is to use it from within the Squeezebox world but it has become something of a challenge in its own right. I was initially working on a Mac OS X system (to avoid building a recent Logitech Media Server [LMS, new name for the squeezebox server software] on my FreeBSD 9 system until later). There is an LMS plugin for the radioSHARK which uses an small C program called shark2 to set frequencies etc... Shark2 did not work on OS X 10.6, and after much gnashing of teeth and digging through the libhid and libusb world I finally found out that it can't be made to work (Apple's USB drivers grab the device exclusively and the pre OS X 10.6 trick of using a kext to protect it no longer works). The authors of libusb recommended using a library called hidapi. I got that working and discovered that the bytes that shark2 sends down the usb connection don't work on my device (possibly because I have a radioSHARK v1). A bit more googling and I found some old notes in Japanese that described the protocol (Google translate to the rescue, more or less...) and I am now able to turn the LEDs on and off and tune to FM and AM (crappy reception) at will. So, I've convinced myself that I have a sufficient understanding of how the thing works. On to FreeBSD. When I plug the device into my 9.0-STABLE system it seems to be recognized: ugen1.2: at usbus1 uaudio0: on usbus1 uaudio0: No playback! uaudio0: Record: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, 16-bit S-LE PCM format uaudio0: No midi sequencer pcm1: on uaudio0 uhid0: on And I can do the cheap and easy test of > cat /dev/dsp1.0 > /dev/dsp0.1 and listen to what ever channel it happens to be set to. The mixer command let me set the volume with "-f mixer1" and I was very hopeful. It seemed like I should be able to recreate my OS X/hidapi version using FreeBSD libusbhid. The meat of the hidapi version is a call to hid_write, which in turn does the following call into the OS X libraries. set_report(dev, kIOHIDReportTypeOutput, data, length); which seems to map straightforwardly to something like this (cribbed from various things in /usr/src): hid_init(NULL); f = open("/dev/uhid0", O_RDWR); if (f < 0) err(1, "%s", "/dev/uhid0"); // red LED memset(buf, 0x00, sizeof(buf)); buf[0] = 0xA9; /* red on */ r = hid_set_report(f, hid_output, buf, 7); if (r != 0) warn("hid_set_report"); But it consistently tells me > sudo ./shark shark: hid_set_report: Device not configured A bit of poking around led me to [blindly] try usbhidctl and to discover that it also runs into 'Device not configured' errors. > sudo usbhidctl -f /dev/uhid0 -v -a Password: usbhidctl: hid_get_report(rid 0): Device not configured Got input report 0 (6 bytes): Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= usbhidctl: hid_get_report(rid 0): Device not configured Got output report 0 (6 bytes): Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= Consumer:Consumer_Control.Consumer:Consumer_Control= I have output from setting hw.usb.uhid.debug=15 then plugging the radioSHARK in here: http://shrimp.alerce.com/radioSHARK/usb-sysctl-output.txt and the output from usbconfig -d ugen1.2 dump_device_desc dump_curr_config_desc here: http://shrimp.alerce.com/radioSHARK/usbconfig-output.txt And output from using usbdump while I tried to toggle the red led on/off here: http://shrimp.alerce.com/radioSHARK/usbdump-output-red-off.txt http://shrimp.alerce.com/radioSHARK/usbdump-output-red-on.txt I'm open to suggestions about what to try next. Does it trouble you that the MacOS hidapi library can talk to it (presumably via the HID interface) but that it fails in 9.0-STABLE? g. If I connect a USB stick on the same port, the notebook offers 40M. The disk on all 4 ports only offers 1M. I tried external power to disk too, no help (well I'd hoped maybe low V might have sabotaged negotiation - long shot ;-) I suspect/ hope I just need to do a quirk table entry ? Hints please ? 8.2-RELEASE amd64, I'd prefer to stay on 8.2 but I have a smallish space for a temporary current or 9 if I have to. /var/log/messages: ugen0.2: <01234567890123456789012345678901234567890123> at usbus0 umass0: <01234567890123456789012345678901234567890123 012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567, class 0/0, rev 2.10/1.00, addr 2> on usbus0 umass0: SCSI over Bulk-Only; quirks = 0x0000 umass0:0:0:-1: Attached to scbus0 da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 scbus0 target 0 lun 0 da0: Fixed Direct Access SCSI-5 device da0: 1.000MB/s transfers da0: 238475MB (488397168 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 30401C) /sbin/devd -f /dev/null -d -D (extract) Processing event '+ugen0.2 vendor=0x174c product=0x55aa devclass=0x00 devsubclass=0x00 sernum="0123456789ABCDEF0188" release=0x0100 at port=2 on ugen0.1' Pushing table setting device-name=ugen0.2 setting vendor=0x174c setting product=0x55aa setting devclass=0x00 setting devsubclass=0x00 setting sernum=0123456789ABCDEF0188 setting release=0x0100 Processing attach event Popping table Processing event '!system=USB subsystem=DEVICE type=ATTACH cdev=ugen0.2 vendor=0x174c product=0x55aa devclass=0x00 devsubclass=0x00 sernum="0123456789ABCDEF0188" release=0x0100 mode=host port=2 parent=ugen0.1' Pushing table setting system=USB setting subsystem=DEVICE setting type=ATTACH setting cdev=ugen0.2 setting vendor=0x174c setting product=0x55aa setting devclass=0x00 setting devsubclass=0x00 setting sernum=0123456789ABCDEF0188 setting release=0x0100 setting mode=host setting port=2 setting parent=ugen0.1 Processing notify event Popping table Processing event '!system=USB subsystem=INTERFACE type=ATTACH cdev=ugen0.2 vendor=0x174c product=0x55aa devclass=0x00 devsubclass=0x00 sernum="0123456789ABCDEF0188" release=0x0100 mode=host interface=0 endpoints=2 intclass=0x08 intsubclass=0x06 intprotocol=0x50' Pushing table setting system=USB setting subsystem=INTERFACE setting type=ATTACH setting cdev=ugen0.2 setting vendor=0x174c setting product=0x55aa setting devclass=0x00 setting devsubclass=0x00 setting sernum=0123456789ABCDEF0188 setting release=0x0100 setting mode=host setting interface=0 setting endpoints=2 setting intclass=0x08 setting intsubclass=0x06 setting intprotocol=0x50 Processing notify event Popping table Processing event '? at bus=1 hubaddr=2 port=0 devaddr=2 interface=0 vendor=0x174c product=0x55aa devclass=0x00 devsubclass=0x00 sernum="0123456789ABCDEF0188" release=0x0100 intclass=0x08 intsubclass=0x06 on uhub0' Pushing table setting bus=1 setting hubaddr=2 setting port=0 setting devaddr=2 setting interface=0 setting vendor=0x174c setting product=0x55aa setting devclass=0x00 setting devsubclass=0x00 setting sernum=0123456789ABCDEF0188 setting release=0x0100 setting intclass=0x08 setting intsubclass=0x06 setting bus=uhub0 Processing nomatch event Popping table Processing event '+umass0 vendor=0x174c product=0x55aa devclass=0x00 devsubclass=0x00 sernum="0123456789ABCDEF0188" release=0x0100 intclass=0x08 intsubclass=0x06 at bus=1 hubaddr=2 port=0 devaddr=2 interface=0 vendor=0x174c product=0x55aa devclass=0x00 devsubclass=0x00 sernum="0123456789ABCDEF0188" release=0x0100 intclass=0x08 intsubclass=0x06 on uhub0' Pushing table setting device-name=umass0 setting vendor=0x174c setting product=0x55aa setting devclass=0x00 setting devsubclass=0x00 setting sernum=0123456789ABCDEF0188 setting release=0x0100 setting intclass=0x08 setting intsubclass=0x06 Processing attach event Popping table Processing event '!system=DEVFS subsystem=CDEV type=CREATE cdev=pass0' Pushing table setting system=DEVFS setting subsystem=CDEV setting type=CREATE setting cdev=pass0 Cheers, Julian -- Julian Stacey, BSD Unix Linux C Sys Eng Consultants Munich http://berklix.com Reply below not above, cumulative like a play script, & indent with "> ". You can only do the opposite: sysctl -a hw.usb.ehci.no_hs The EHCI port reset code is found here: /sys/dev/usb/controller/ehci.c Look for "ehci_disown()". Maybe we need to reset the port multiple times before giving up High-Speed USB ? --HPS From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 10 23:33:17 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CCA76106566C for ; Sat, 10 Mar 2012 23:33:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhs@berklix.com) Received: from tower.berklix.org (tower.berklix.org [83.236.223.114]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4F43C8FC0C for ; Sat, 10 Mar 2012 23:33:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mart.js.berklix.net (pD9FBFA8A.dip.t-dialin.net [217.251.250.138]) (authenticated bits=0) by tower.berklix.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id q2ANXAgD016295; Sat, 10 Mar 2012 23:33:11 GMT (envelope-from jhs@berklix.com) Received: from fire.js.berklix.net (fire.js.berklix.net [192.168.91.41]) by mart.js.berklix.net (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id q2ANWuYV013487; Sun, 11 Mar 2012 00:32:58 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from jhs@berklix.com) Received: from fire.js.berklix.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by fire.js.berklix.net (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id q2ANWiiF037844; Sun, 11 Mar 2012 00:32:50 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from jhs@fire.js.berklix.net) Message-Id: <201203102332.q2ANWiiF037844@fire.js.berklix.net> To: Hans Petter Selasky From: "Julian H.
