Then compile up > tools/tools/ath/athstats and run it for me. > To follow up: The LORs you showed (net80211 common lock and net80211 node list lock) are known. I'd like them fixed, but it's going to require a bit of re-jiggling of various bits and pieces to actually fix those. If they were -really- locking things up, you should be able to break into the debugger to find which locks are held (show alllocks) and hopefully we can then identify/fix the dead locks in question. So it could be: * A total crash - eg, because something scribbled into memory it shouldn't have, or some bit of code did something with free'd data somehow, etc * A dead lock - two (or more) locks holding things up I'd like you to run athstats -i ath0 (and then athstats -i ath0 1 for a while) to see what kind of traffic/errors you're seeing. Compiling up tools/tools/net80211/wlanstats/ and running 'wlanstats -i wlan0' (and then wlanstats -i wlan0 1 for a while) couldn't hurt too. You're running it in ap mode, not sta mode, so it's not doing lots of scanning - but are you setting a channel before you enable the hostap interface, or is it also scanning? Is it also seeing lots of stuck beacons in -HEAD ? If not, there's no continous "reset" path going on. I've mostly fixed concurrency issues in the driver; the only real issues are some subtle reset issues and 'RX PCU full' issues that I'm still trying to chase down. Both of which should be logging something. I'd also then like you to try a few things; * try adding kdb/ddb to the kernel, and then break to debugger when things have hung * try then adding the software watchdog to the kernel, enable it before you flip up the wifi device, see if it enters the debugger after the system hangs - the watchdog should fire when it's not patted (assuming it's not being patted!) and enter the debugger Finally, I've not seen this before here, but I've certainly heard the occasional rumour about this kind of behaviour occuring. I'd really like to try and narrow this down but it may take a (long) while. I'm just warning you. :) Thanks, Adrian From owner-freebsd-wireless@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 23 11:07:29 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-wireless@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 96DFC106564A for ; Mon, 23 Apr 2012 11:07:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 800B88FC1B for ; Mon, 23 Apr 2012 11:07:29 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q3NB7Twt047765 for ; Mon, 23 Apr 2012 11:07:29 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q3NB7S7S047763 for freebsd-wireless@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 23 Apr 2012 11:07:28 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2012 11:07:28 GMT Message-Id: <201204231107.q3NB7S7S047763@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-wireless@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-wireless@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-wireless@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussions of 802.11 stack, tools device driver development." I have (live on) acerage, and by their standards, I'm no longer within their coverage area (forget about the fact that a year ago I _was_ in that map, and had to sign a 2yr commitment). Well, truth be told, if I go out to my "back 40", I _do_ receive a decent WiMax signal. So, what I need to do is setup my WiMax receiver/modem out in the "back 40", and attach it to a repeater (WAP11[1]), so I can use the service I pay for. The Linksys WAP11 seemed to be the perfect solution, but as it was "made for Windoze" setting it up isn't a trivial matter. Requires configuration via: USB/SNMP/AT76C510.MIB. Well, given that I picked this thing up used, it isn't configured in a default state (which might give me access via Ethernet). So given that, it's configured to for someone elses network -- meaning my only option is through USB. I see there is net-mgmt/ap-utils. But the documentation minimal, at best. So I had hoped that given this WAP11 has been around for so long, that I might find someone on the list to give me a "leg up". Thank you for all your time and consideration. --Chris Linksys WAP11: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WAP11 From owner-freebsd-wireless@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 27 12:51:24 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-wireless@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7F4BD106564A; Fri, 27 Apr 2012 12:51:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gavin@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 52A5A8FC16; Fri, 27 Apr 2012 12:51:24 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q3RCpOvG041568; Fri, 27 Apr 2012 12:51:24 GMT (envelope-from gavin@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gavin@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q3RCpODs041564; Fri, 27 Apr 2012 12:51:24 GMT (envelope-from gavin) Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2012 12:51:24 GMT Message-Id: <201204271251.q3RCpODs041564@freefall.freebsd.org> To: gavin@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-wireless@FreeBSD.org From: gavin@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: bin/164209: [build] [patch] buildworld WITHOUT_OPENSSL stops at usr.sbin/wpa/hostapd X-BeenThere: freebsd-wireless@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussions of 802.11 stack, tools device driver development." List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2012 08:38:08 -0000 Hi all, I've implemented a basic, ath(4) driver specific channel survey extension using the diagnostic API. I'd like for this to eventually be made available to net80211. What you need: * freebsd-head as of two minutes ago; * an AR5416 or later NIC (I haven't ported it back to the AR5212 era legacy NICs, and AR5210/AR5211 don't have the needed registers); * built src/tools/tools/ath/athsurvey/ What you get: * a per-second snapshot of the channel busy status - TX busy %, RX busy %, channel busy %, and extension channel busy %. * since 32 samples are kept (and they're done every 1/10th of a second), there's enough history to get 3 seconds of data - so the lower, average and upper values are reported. What's currently broken/unimplemented: * It's not that useful when a channel scan is going on. I'll eventually extend it to be available from the normal userland, so a single snapshot of the channel state can be recorded * Fetching the 'off-channel' state (ie, to compare all the channels at once) * the extension channel counters seem to get thoroughly upset occasionally and report some garbage values. I'll track down why that is and document it, for the mean time don't pay attention to them if you're in a 20MHz wide channel. But with all the above issues (and the TODO list in the commit!), it's still a good indication of exactly how busy the channel is and how much time you're spending RX'ing frames versus RX'ing "other stuff that it can't decode". Those of you in noisy wireless environments would probably benefit from these statistics. Note the difference between how "busy" a channel can get - it can be quite bursty, so you can see a big difference between the lower and upper values. Don't be too frightened, that's to be expected. :) Please report and weirdnesses and crashes that may occur. Finally, if someone would like to port this stuff to the AR5212 HAL, please contact me. It'll be very straight forward to do and you'll also then get survey support for all the 11abg NICs out there. List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2012 18:59:04 -0000 Hi, It's known broken on 9.0 (for 802.11n NICs) and -HEAD (for everything.) It should work fine for 8.0, as long as it's one of the NIC versions that Sam did development on. I'm sorry, I still don't have time to get my hands dirty in the TDMA code. It's very likely there are some subtle timer configuration issues and different NICs may behave slightly differently (or buggy) here. Does the stuck beacon issue come up in normal ap mode? Adrian
