I just committed a patch to the experimental xorg repository that is believed to fix the issues with the vesa driver and other drivers in combination with libpciaccess. It has gotten rudimentary testing by me, but it needs more extensive testing, since I don't have access to all kinds of hardware. If you have had trouble with the experimental xorg distribution (xorg 7.7), please rebuild devel/libpciaccess and test again. The patch was obtained from the Debian package repository, via one of the persons working on libpciaccess. Have you tried xbacklight from ports? The last shot I can think of beside trying random ACPI handles (You can sometimes tell because of checks of \IGD or \PEG that a handle is graphics related on at least X220), is to see if there is an address in the graphics device's pci space to write a value to with pciconf. I have to do something similar on an Asus 1001pxd under debian, sometimes the backlight is offset toward high or low, so I do setpci (pciconf is our equivalent) XX:YY f4.b=NN where XX:YY is the PCI address and NN is 16-bit hex value I think. The f4.b part is variable, you'd have to find the correct address for your card, and it's possibly quite risky (being a user-induced write to the PCI space at goodness knows what address :) ). This is probably the WrongWayToDoIt (tm) but it may be an option. If you see the pciconf manpage, you can see that our equivalent would be some variant of pciconf -w You may have some luck finding this value by digging through (or trolling through, whatever floats your boat) Linux forums for backlight fixes for your model. I'll take a look at your DSDT if I get a chance. It might be possible, depending perhaps on how old mesa version you go to. are the r600 and r300 supported by the mesa version that's installed from the ports system when running with WITH_NEW_XORG? Mesa 8.0.* is only in the development repo. I suggest you try, by pulling xserver, drivers, etc. from the development repo, but keep the old mesa parts (libGL, dri, drm) around, and then let us know how it went. I'm not sure, honestly, and can't check right away. What version of Mesa does the ports tree provide with WITH_NEW_XORG? In the development tree, WITH_NEW_XORG gives Mesa 8.0.x, which is too new for the r600 classic driver. In the development tree, not setting WITH_NEW_XORG gives Mesa 7.6, which is apparently too old to include the r600 classic driver. Last night I compiled Mesa 7.11.2, separate from the ports tree, and that provided the r600 classic driver, which seems to work fine (tested with a number of the Mesa demos). The classic r300 and r600 drivers were deprecated in favor of the gallium r300/r600 drivers which do not work on FreeBSD (they require kernel modesetting). The older classic drivers in previous versions of Mesa have some 3D functionality. You might be able to play neverball or openarena at moderate settings, but probably nothing much more complicated than that. I installed xf86-video-ati-6.14.6 and since then I experience random system hangs or resets (not panics) during VTY switch between to X sessions. I did a number of other changes to my system at about the same time, so I am not sure if the driver is to blame, but it looks like a probable candidate.
