Display corruption and inability to restart the X server were the big problems. FreeBSD 9.1-RC2 (amd64): Intel driver worked, but display corruption was still an issue. If I tried to play a video, I'd get a GPU hanged, acceleration disabled message and then the display corruption would vanish (video wouldn't play, however). FreeBSD 9.1-RC3 (amd64): Significant display corruption. Display is unusable, videos play (presumably with xvideo) with significant corruption. Ubuntu 12.10 live CD (amd64): Accelerated 2D graphics work perfectly with no noticeable corruption. It's not terribly prolific because I think many cross-platform products do not use interfaces which return ETIME. It sounds like BSD though is the only remaining holdout, as Windows and OSX both seem to support ETIME. I'll see how I can dig into. I was trying to switch from mplayer to mplayer2 today. During the install, it always failed with the error that libxcb needed python version at most 2.7. I had a higher version of python installed, so it would check for that and fail. I increased the python version in both Makefiles for multimedia/mplayer2 and x11/libxcb to 3.2 and was then able to compile mplayer2 without any further problems. I've attached the diffs to them for your review. I don't know whether this will break other ports, but maybe someone should review the python requirements for libxcb. Anyway, I'm using mplayer2 now. :-) Regards and keep up the good work! Going into x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel and chaning src/i965_render.c around a bit helped. Turns out gen7_composite_wm_state still tries to configure too many threads. Changing the ps_max_threads to 42 from 86 eliminated the corruption I saw with blackbox. But there are still lots of artifacts with video. - alex From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 15 21:41:44 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 74D23387; Thu, 15 Nov 2012 21:41:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from sendtomatt@gmail.com) Received: from mail-pb0-f54.google.com (mail-pb0-f54.google.com [209.85.160.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3546E8FC08; Thu, 15 Nov 2012 21:41:44 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-pb0-f54.google.com with SMTP id wz12so1565433pbc.13 for ; Thu, 15 Nov 2012 13:41:38 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject :references:in-reply-to:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=zznN1MChQ4+VtPTQKPPbf+Y1BeQ8QvzX3V4K6DohpF0=; b=UIdzs75fuiv+iOJVAufeJDlI8LulbiH64upOuK3VayUSSR5x22KG57QbnoACFrq6tp /wum+t0FJnHYtD2vhKfxWLi9vX7sDjs8DFtP0coTcx3GSb9V7+Wliru1Svi4V51NQ8XT P7tAqlDCSTGBbHb+KVOKQJDMQzazCxhvBX+GMbMyoPA6+i8X3GJCkk+Kc1cDwLmpwq+I 5pGXS6LIrvs8j9FWMkM5d/JalbGr9yRlpPhQNIONplVcFKwcLnYo5uNWrXRjGnAmC6Xh 29fJPxOmuQRxb+UN7LbrIAWPrvoH72zZmDVdXtenka3FoIsEBrKmqiv/b21lbeQ9EUL+ MHoA== Received: by 10.66.88.102 with SMTP id bf6mr7062337pab.10.1353015698284; Thu, 15 Nov 2012 13:41:38 -0800 (PST) Received: from flatline.local (70-36-223-239.dsl.dynamic.sonic.net. Apparently ATI reinvented the wheel on this particular rv580, and did not include or obfuscated the atom bios PCI rom. As a result, the radeon driver won't get past the initial detection. It seems as though the appropriate hack for x1900 G5 is to either get a PC copy of the rom and patch the radeon driver to eat that, or to figure out where the ROM is and how to expose it. It's possible the atombios data is actually in the OS X driver software, as the fans on this card spin full power until the driver loads (or all the time in freebsd...) So after that moment of frustration (and $20 temporarily wasted...) I jammed a PC X600 in, hoping to get that working, with the Q6600 installed as well so I could see. X refuses to detect the x600, because we're on a mac I think...pciconf shows the card, but the driver won't attach. "No cards detected" Datapoint: G5 Dual Core/Quad, X is pretty much out of the question with a radeon card of any kind. Since nouveau is also broken (I think?) that means no DRM testing on this platform until one or the other works. So I think I'll keep focusing on the MDD for now... The X driver for the radoen, or DDX requires the TTM and I don't think there has been a single bit of real work to get this implemented. DRM and Mesa both require ttm in the kernel drivers to even begin to work. If we could find someone willing to actually do the work of integrating these into the kernel, we could have nouveau. Nouveau works great under linux on my G5, enough so that I can watch movies fullscreen with no tearing, and if I use gallum3D, I can actually play some fairly "recent" 3D games. As far as copying the atombios out of the os x driver, that's a possibilty. Now what the nouveau guys did was initiate the card with the nvidia blob and look at the cards states before and after in order to make a working driver. You could probably do the same thing using linux as the foundation for getting the radeon to work properly on the G5. Perhaps you could just load up linux on there to get the bios from memory. Oh TTM...are there any docs for this "thing"? Or is the problem we need to blackbox/cleanroom it out of Linux? Regarding the X1900 driver, I think it's also broken on Linux (no google results of it working, anyway...). I have a big amd64 board with a couple x16 slots, so I may boot it up and try to see what I can snag with Linux or GPU-Z (or whatever windows gamer tools their are for flashing radeons). It's also worth looking at what the driver actually needs the bios for and like you mention hardcode defaults based on the running card or it's pc equivalent. That's another project... :) Matt From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Nov 16 00:05:34 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 80535E82 for ; Fri, 16 Nov 2012 00:05:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from top7a330745@tom.com) Received: from smtp.tom.com (cnsmtpr1.tom.com [218.30.111.151]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 647438FC13 for ; Fri, 16 Nov 2012 00:05:30 +0000 (UTC) Authentication-Results: bjja-freeapp-antispam1 smtp.user=top7a330745@tom.com; auth=pass (LOGIN) Received: from [60.190.107.42] ([60.190.107.42:3492] helo=hjjgfdd) by bjja-freeapp-antispam1 (envelope-from ) (ecelerity 3.4.0.22880 r(/root/Momo-3.4:0b01fc72f675)) with ESMTPA id 4C/F1-08921-84385A05; Fri, 16 Nov 2012 08:05:28 +0800 From: "top7a330745@tom.com" Message-ID: <4C.F1.08921.84385A05@bjja-freeapp-antispam1> Subject: electric To: "freebsd-x11" Sender: top7a330745@tom.com Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2012 08:06:57 +0800 Content-Disposition: inline MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.14 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list Reply-To: verachi1@mail.com List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2012 00:05:34 -0000 Dear , Are you interested in saving some money on importing any of the followi ng?: - transformer - switch - circuit breaker - AC contactor -capacitor -cable&wire All of our products are very affordable as a result of being produced i n special economic development regions of China and we are more than happy to help you with the import/export process too! So, if you don't have a 10.5.8 install disk handy, I'll dig mine up and install it on mine and see about ripping the rom out of there. You will have to modify the driver to use this rom, as I'm certain it's quite dissimilar to the pc version of the rom. There are a few ATI kexts, one has a name similar to Prionace (this is the OFW name for the card) and is 788k. Not sure what size we're looking for...Does sysutils/binwalk identify/pull PCI ROMs yet? Between that and hexedit are my usual tools for firmware analysis. Unfortunately I might not be able to hack on this till after Thanksgiving. Well, I've put all of the "seems to be associated" kexts, plugins and bundles into one dir so I can keep track of what I'm doing. I don't have this particular card so I can't do much more than go through all of the plists and see if one is associated with the other. I've extracted all of the actual driver portions out of each one. binwalk isn't an option for me on os x till I can get the problems with libmagic sorted out, refuses to compile. Once I get that sorted, I'll post all of the firmware dumps that I can get out of the drivers and maybe we can start sorting this out. I did find several points along the way while browsing that show which parts are associated with framebuffer relating to open firmware and what seems to be a portion in the driver that has the human readable console output if you were loading with -v for os x. I see things about "found card, loading framebuffer device". Granted that could just be for the verbose console output before the gui loads. I wish I had the actual card, but there isn't one available close to my residence. You or Justin mentioned it not working on linux and while searching I did find some posts on debians mailing list where someone did get the card detected with the radeon driver, but it's fighting with offb and results in a white screen when X loads.
