Hello everyone -

Hopefully most of you know ISC - Internet Systems Consortium. We're the
guys that develop named (both BIND 9 and the new BIND10) and dhcpd. What
you may not know is that we also operate F-Root, which serves about a
third of the global root DNS traffic through over 50 sites around the
world, as well as provide hosting to public benefit projects through
several datacenters here in the bay area. To support this we've got our
own dark fiber network here in the bay area, and a WAN to several other
key datacenters in the US.

Well, we need another engineer in our operations group. You can read the
job posting below, but the key take away is that we're looking for
someone who's good, but not afraid to get (and keep) their hands dirty
keeping the systems running and the network happy. We're mostly a
FreeBSD shop, so the person should have a solid UNIX background, plus a
strong interest (and hopefully skills) in the networking side of things.

What you also might not know is that ISC is a 501C3 non-profit, with the
explicitly stated goal of making the Internet better(*). While working
at ISC will never net you the biggest paycheck in Silicon Valley, you
can generally sleep well knowing you're doing good work for the community.

So, if this sounds interesting to you, or you know of someone this might
fit, check out jobs page at
https://www.isc.org/wordpress/about/jobs/systems-engineer or just submit
a CV to jobs@isc.org. If you have any questions, just ask.

Thanks!

Systems Engineer

ISC is looking for a self-driven, hands-on systems engineer with a
partial network focus to work as part of our Operations team. This team
manages all the technical operations for ISC, as well as the global
operation of the F-Root DNS Root Nameserver instance. The initial focus
of this position will be handling day to day "ticket requests" including
turnup/turndown of BGP peers, user account configuration requests, basic
office support tasks, and routine troubleshooting of all kinds -- within
and external to our organization. Additionally, the person in this
position will lead our virtualization effort, both in determining
strategy and the execution of the plan. Over time, it is expected that
this position will expand to involve more project and architectural
work. The perfect candidate would probably consider themselves to be a
generalist, with a voracious appetite to learn.

Duties will include:
• Active participation in planning, troubleshooting, and upgrading of
network equipment in a multi-vendor environment, including (but not
limited to) IOS (XR, XE, Classic), JunOS, and the HP Procurve OS.
• Operation and maintenance of the systems that keep ISC running, both
in the Bay Area and around the world.
• Participation in an on-call rotation for both ISC's customer support
department as well as ISC's on-call 24 Hour NOC.
• Working to help enhance existing monitoring of systems and services,
and responding quickly to downtime notifications, including coordinating
with local hands at remote sites.
• Virtualization of existing physical servers and evaluation of private
and public virtualization solutions

Factors and Traits Desired for Candidates
• Expertise with Unix-like operating systems is required, with
experience in FreeBSD and Linux specifically preferred. Knowledge of
Solaris is a plus.
• Familiarity with virtualization, with VMWare experience a plus.
• Familiarity with modern storage architectures, with open source
solutions a plus
• Experience with Datacenter facilities management (electrical power,
HVAC, cable distribution plant)
• Excellent problem solving skills, with the ability to tackle a problem
on an unfamiliar platform, research and develop potential resolutions,
and implement them successfully
• Scripting experience (shell or perl), with both the ability to deploy
new solutions as well as adapt existing ones to handle changing business
needs.
• Troubleshooting skills at the application-layer for protocols such as
SMTP, HTTP, FTP, DNS, SIP, and NFS, both from the network point-of-view
and the application side.
• Ability to work in a shell session and be familiar with working triage
on systems over limited-bandwidth links (e.g. serial consoles, IP KVMs).
• Familiarity with host based and standalone firewalls and best common
security practices, from both a system and network point-of-view.
• Basic network configuration experience including familiarity with
VLANs, static routes and BGP configuration. Experience with IPv6 in a
production network is a plus.
• Experience with VoIP protocols (SIP, SCCP) and Asterisk is a plus.
• Experience with LDAP directories and common implementations
• Experience with Infrastructure monitoring and trending software (eg,
Nagios, Cacti, Syslog-NG/RSyslog, Splunk, Graylog2, logstash)
• Awareness of system administration community culture and current events
• Good communication skills are a must, specifically for interaction
with staff, customers and partners to provide solutions to their
requirements.
• Independent and self-directed work ethic when participating in a
collaborative environment
• Exceptional project and time management skills. Project planning with
an eye towards long term sustainability and scalability.
• Valid driver's license or other form of government-issued identification
• Method of transportation suitable for round trips of up to 150 miles
on short notice (if Bay Area based)
• Availability to work non-traditional hours when necessary, including a
rotating on-call duty schedule
• Physical ability to lift 75 pounds unassisted
• Applicants located in the San Francisco Bay Area are preferred, but
remote employment or relocation will be considered.

This position requires open minded, motivated, hands-on individuals who
thrive in an environment comprised of strong engineering and
multidisciplinary teams having both software development and systems
administration backgrounds. Candidates must possess a desire to pioneer
solutions and automation over existing and new services that empower the
core of the Internet.

Express your interest by sending your resume to jobs@isc.org
