It lacks a lot of code to support the full card. I have had a card with a chip that was *supported* (but not) by the driver and I didn't manage to play any sound.. The current code of the driver is - I think - at early stages because of lot of commented code so I guess the maintainer didn't have too much time to spend on that. I don't think that we'll ever see a bigger update to the snd_env* family. I haven't seen Konstantin Dimitrov (the maintainer) for years, the link to the datasheets and documentation [1] is long dead and even the existing patches like kern/152378 weren't committed. And the times have changed. While not perfect most snd_hda chips are good enough for just listen to music, there's the possibility to send a digital signal by spdif to an external a/d-converter, etc... The need for high end add in sound cards is much lower than 10 years ago. 1: http://envy24.svobodno.com -- Homepage: www.yamagi.org XMPP: yamagi@yamagi.org GnuPG/GPG: 0xEFBCCBCB From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 20 08:22:40 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0A8EA8E for ; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 08:22:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) Received: from nm25-vm6.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com (nm25-vm6.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com [212.82.109.207]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id EC80C33C for ; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 08:22:39 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [77.238.189.57] by nm25.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Mar 2013 08:22:38 -0000 Received: from [46.228.39.97] by tm10.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Mar 2013 08:22:38 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] by smtp134.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Mar 2013 08:22:38 -0000 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=rocketmail.com; s=s1024; t=1363767758; bh=i6PMZM1qKfT02XFx7PiJlwv2FsovPBoHM7KbODyfVQI=; h=X-Yahoo-Newman-Id:X-Yahoo-Newman-Property:X-YMail-OSG:X-Yahoo-SMTP:X-Rocket-Received:Message-ID:Subject:From:To:Date:In-Reply-To:References:Content-Type:X-Mailer:Mime-Version:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=4akfNwrdUI64eocem8LrZLsG8FET44RspjJtC/W4VgVqRqcOcYTkJaCFD6LCLixeghPxwUqBqzIdTIyYMtnXsf0RIcTilCnLln+uVBQdleZ+4v1pwZfue0BV+7fqrqfK2TVPsYZK1BWcsnzhyvNAR/fEw8+TU3wbhLw6z6Dg23U= X-Yahoo-Newman-Id: 393506.18916.bm@smtp134.mail.ir2.yahoo.com X-Yahoo-Newman-Property: ymail-3 X-YMail-OSG: MuXUy8EVM1lOcGEij4mvhItjgfT8F.XCJ.4hFaRShAhMFW5 HbnZZAhH6h7TqeiG28FT5KyE3719sXUK55T.AUp_NrZ_K92XKX_N915EnD5I kbMKU6Uj260IeJVPmM888w1G0XFsEO4ggGovLfq.NTWP_zJthA4FWiUiijrE Mz5_Y7kRkldbay025mxO84gZgw_3SJBNw5BBPERIDitbsSCrvPQUl4TYBHmu jyhWXdAw0TgJHuauByfeQlAN4dfrSi5MiXhHTF2tKB1_m.C547rStrXbDXdy tFF7SHhSF6K7wmEz9OxDLh0bICqVzdsI3aO6x4GBAUIQ.LIXLgplfe9PXuTs v4uqz7SE98fIdfFBWAbyko7OrcoTM74EMx.UgU.HB1cOMok3RoTRKiGMZ.wP rDWXoBfgRix193Ewle9b9gvhGI3fsThOVF_zsYQ-- X-Yahoo-SMTP: BeMCPs2swBABTJ3kAeEiC_hE0mz8jRexLddJfD8pI2j32fOacjBmXg-- X-Rocket-Received: from [85.182.18.108] (ralf.mardorf@85.182.18.108 with login) by smtp134.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with SMTP; 20 Mar 2013 08:22:38 +0000 UTC Message-ID: <1363767755.586.32.camel@archlinux> Subject: Re: snd_envy24{,ht} recording support? That's not true, if you want to replace your HiFi gear by a computer, you need a good sound card too, that anyway, will be less expensive than good HiFi gear. _All_ on-board devices are crap! But the good thing is, that the RME HDSPe AIO does work for consumer usage on FreeBSD (TotalMix isn't supported). For audio production I still use Linux, unfortunately there the RME HDSPe AIO isn't well supported, so *nix users need several good audio cards :(. I'm not willing to install Windows, but I'm not happy about the hardware situation on *nix. Have you tried contacting Konstantin? The last (private) mail I received from him was in July, 2011. He sent me a long mail about the state of the envy drivers in FreeBSD. It's quite interesting, but I'd rather not publish it here without his permission. -- Joel From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 20 10:06:06 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4AA01E34 for ; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 10:06:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from demelier.david@gmail.com) Received: from mail-wi0-x230.google.com (mail-wi0-x230.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:400c:c05::230]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CE9C2B6E for ; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 10:06:05 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-wi0-f176.google.com with SMTP id hm14so5027305wib.15 for ; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 03:06:05 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:x-received:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id :subject:from:to:cc:content-type; bh=wEzcge/ZzZh80ceA0clK9XR2Ech1JDopUKbMB/wM7Vw=; b=nfbuQ8RQkKUPHitwVqH+Tsoal8O+YKlHb/Q3dvgP0KjoCsAgqllfX6PKFiyPX9VfU6 HzBuSjhdOdbI+wGe9jq3Vidf3BOjLCGvWwrSZGpxcj1WFDxUbp6f+t2E3m8G8yjfCVsg vR/XfgR0wfzliapS1fuI+PjmRDsUX5gG9Cxlh8/Uiu+4MkwXlqIUtpLoarXPnChT8M8u hia2vF+LpE8XP749BDulRom5e2t1vQGlzaOISVmGDSSn1FgEoKsgm4H/FCJJB4QuFe+w NBiQRVWMqYs0y8fDm84JULaOjv0vcnAGt/66Gov2aG4VCBB7IXK9HK/Bfhlu/dp1NQAj cWfw== MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Received: by 10.180.84.165 with SMTP id a5mr2590846wiz.6.1363773965052; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 03:06:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.194.60.147 with HTTP; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 03:06:04 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <511171A0.5060000@gmail.com> References: <51015592.7080807@gmail.com> <511171A0.5060000@gmail.com> Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2013 11:06:04 +0100 Message-ID: Subject: Re: Fwd: Disable monitor recording source From: David Demelier To: Stuart Barkley Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2013 10:06:06 -0000 2013/2/5 David Demelier : > On 05/02/2013 15:20, Stuart Barkley wrote: >> On Tue, 5 Feb 2013 at 05:22 -0000, David Demelier wrote: >> >>> Hello (sorry for forwarding but I didn't have much answers), >> >> This is probably the best place for this question. >> >>> I would like to record only from mic but I can't remove monitor from >>> recording : >>> >>> markand@Melon ~ $ cat /dev/sndstat >>> FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 64bit 2009061500/amd64) >>> Installed devices: >>> pcm0: (play) >>> pcm1: (play/rec) default >>> markand@Melon ~ $ mixer >>> Mixer vol is currently set to 90:90 >>> Mixer pcm is currently set to 90:90 >>> Mixer speaker is currently set to 0:0 >>> Mixer mic is currently set to 90:90 >>> Mixer rec is currently set to 80:80 >>> Mixer igain is currently set to 0:0 >>> Mixer ogain is currently set to 100:100 >>> Mixer monitor is currently set to 80:80 >>> Recording source: mic, monitor >>> markand@Melon ~ $ mixer -rec monitor >>> Recording source: mic, monitor >>> markand@Melon ~ $ >>> >>> What I'm doing wrong? >> >> A couple simple thoughts: >> >> I've always used something like 'mixer =rec mic'. Well, digital data either works without corruption or doesn't work. You can spend as much money on a sound card as you like, but if the sound card is only outputting digital data over SPDIF to a separate DAC, then there is no difference between the cheapest card and the most expensive card, both would sound identical. I don't like consumer SPDIF, but this is OT now, indeed I'm thinking of analog IOs. So I'll rephrase my claim: Analog IOs and D/A, A/D converters of _all_ on-board devices are crap! Yes, if SPDIF should work, it should be without loss, even for those on-board devices. There anyway could be quality issues, but that also could happen with professional gear. And that's the truth. One of the main reasons for me to buy an Envy24ht was the crappy quality of the AC97 onboard chips back then. But HDA is a lot better (I'm still able to hear a difference between the HDA in my current desktop and the Envy) and most people are just stupid endusers without any interest in hi-fi. For them HDA is good enough and because of that most affordable high end consumer soundcards vanished. But as you said, that's OT. So let's return to the topic. :) -- Homepage: www.yamagi.org XMPP: yamagi@yamagi.org GnuPG/GPG: 0xEFBCCBCB From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 20 16:15:41 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09FD66E1; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:15:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lists@yamagi.org) Received: from mail.yamagi.org (mail.yamagi.org [IPv6:2a01:4f8:121:2102:1::7]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C22CF22D; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:15:40 +0000 (UTC) Received: from lennart-ws.pwag-local.de (unknown [212.48.125.109]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mail.yamagi.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 9D7FE1666312; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 17:15:39 +0100 (CET) Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2013 17:15:38 +0100 From: Yamagi Burmeister To: kosio.dimitrov@gmail.com Subject: Re: snd_envy24{,ht} recording support? It led to the question if you're still working on the drivers and if future updates can be expected. A short statement would be really appreciated. :) Ciao, Yamagi 1: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-multimedia/2013-March/013924.html -- Homepage: www.yamagi.org XMPP: yamagi@yamagi.org GnuPG/GPG: 0xEFBCCBCB From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 20 16:23:26 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 685118AC for ; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:23:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) Received: from nm11-vm0.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com (nm11-vm0.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com [77.238.189.218]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id A1F8128F for ; Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:23:25 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [77.238.189.50] by nm11.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Mar 2013 16:23:24 -0000 Received: from [217.146.188.162] by tm3.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Mar 2013 16:23:24 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] by smtp130.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 20 Mar 2013 16:23:24 -0000 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=rocketmail.com; s=s1024; t=1363796604; bh=cGPTPDjoEs522McDdK3JI55hMVIEojVrhu63lsU57fs=; h=X-Yahoo-Newman-Id:X-Yahoo-Newman-Property:X-YMail-OSG:X-Yahoo-SMTP:X-Rocket-Received:Message-ID:Subject:From:To:Date:In-Reply-To:References:Content-Type:X-Mailer:Mime-Version:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=Kjyk1y9TuMTNdRlzuR/9DAdUVwVl7LFhwJyCtQPkdSa+XwioG4PUfgWr1LIV+++jdntoeOXm5QG/iyFe1tFNug6MKWLfKlUo6DCcMmyLxgJIyUB1WlRA4gSxzGIg7/7qIqdo6qzBaROLvQvVeK74GyNZRDJEHOwHXzQf02CvMUA= X-Yahoo-Newman-Id: 173123.92507.bm@smtp130.mail.ird.yahoo.com X-Yahoo-Newman-Property: ymail-3 X-YMail-OSG: 3CPxlbgVM1meQiYz2YN6YRrThHZPMR9DT5sbiQcD2.wLq7x oJirIvRn5dp.e8IHD5nB4N6XkSfquHLuXGPqtOdUitYWaLedXc7PQfn_MaeE oiOvYISKj8ZPvYmyYQaH_x2PlkZmM1NQwXrByXo3KHPrWgQb3J8dtzmBTQAv 0e2oNkZpUunHfV5cWPYK._6y1_AQUWH6EfSRUzU.wvLkiA_sQC_eQv0uC7e0 5cz1wI1YjKadqMnPeT4VGVj3NtxW23E9SFYN7GN0AQex63cWSVfRPKyY4lym U58VQyZD.yV157gsFN7F73zUD2USVkknTS4C_p2YLP5e2EySNFjyPa98z8IX _hI_MgEt.3nW6MHwEtaRJJemmBLn3.Y2FwXcfYJ.8LKdBQpBsZTMwzdoEGwk cLwZEGm1r0Lz6Ppr2F4xELyIKb8o1i0MSnLIM0mgmoGGZ X-Yahoo-SMTP: BeMCPs2swBABTJ3kAeEiC_hE0mz8jRexLddJfD8pI2j32fOacjBmXg-- X-Rocket-Received: from [85.182.18.108] (ralf.mardorf@85.182.18.108 with login) by smtp130.mail.ird.yahoo.com with SMTP; 20 Mar 2013 09:23:24 -0700 PDT Message-ID: <1363796603.586.184.camel@archlinux> Subject: Re: snd_envy24{,ht} recording support? I have a lot of work to do and only if I have enough time I'll take a look again at FreeBSD. However, if you provide the steps to build the kernel, or module or what ever needs to be build, I can test my TerraTec cards. IIRC I haven't found an app to see and/or hear audio input, when I tested the RME card, IIRC I only was able to test the outputs. It's possible for me to copy and paste commands or to run a script to build what's needed, when I don't need Linux for office work, e.g. when I'm sleeping I could backup FreeBSD and let it build a new kernel, but I can't do research how to do it at the moment. Sent me the steps and I run the commands tonight or tomorrow night. I'm only experienced using Linux. This looks like a snd_hda driver quirk, which I'm not using, and snd_atiixp doesn't show any obvious quirks. AC97 however has some, and AC97_F_EAPD_INV looks suspicious. On a fedora forum I found that someone put "snd-atiixp ac97_quirk=3Dinv_eapd" as driver option. Is there a way with Freebsd to change the value of AC97_F_EAPD_INV? The need for high end add Unfortunately, here is NOT MoBo with proper S/PDIF support. ALL of them uses Realtek chips which doesn't support proper 44.1Khz sampling rate, has "hardcoded" DSP settinga and is equipped only with 48Khz (or 96/192) crystal, so try to output CD sound via S/PDIF on any modern MoBo will lead to re-sampling, processinh and/or bad synthesized carrier frequency (which is fatal for S/PDIF). Naturally, unpacked WAV file, sent via on-board S/PDIF optical link to professional card arrives as completely different beast. You need good USB DAC (with "asynchronous" mode, which is rare, and I don't know, is it supported by FreeBSD USB stack at all) or some additional two-crystal card to connect good DAC to computer via coax or optical S/PDIF. And, ironically enough, cheapest way to do so is to buy some Chinese PCI or PCIe card, based on envy24[ht], which could be bought for $15-$20. It will be equipped with very bad DAC and analog path will be crap, but it will have "true", transparent, bit-correct S/PDIF. --=20 // Black Lion AKA Lev Serebryakov From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 21 00:26:02 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E238DD12 for ; Thu, 21 Mar 2013 00:26:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lev@FreeBSD.org) Received: from onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru [46.4.40.135]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A6671D73 for ; Thu, 21 Mar 2013 00:26:02 +0000 (UTC) Received: from lion.home.serebryakov.spb.ru (unknown [IPv6:2001:470:923f:1:cc4d:d550:2eff:ee2d]) (Authenticated sender: lev@serebryakov.spb.ru) by onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (Postfix) with ESMTPA id BA3B64AC5F; Thu, 21 Mar 2013 04:26:01 +0400 (MSK) Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2013 04:25:57 +0400 From: Lev Serebryakov X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <0358577.20130321042557@serebryakov.spb.ru> To: David Demelier Subject: Re: snd_envy24{,ht} recording support? There anyway could be quality issues [snip] You even can't discuss this issue among professional audio engineers, so it for sure is useless to discuss it on a mailing list for an OS, that's not known for it's audio production abilities. I had loss when coping from one consumer DAT 48KHz recorder to another consumer DAT 48KHz recorder using SPDIF, when I was a professional audio engineer, so you can assume that the cable wasn't defect. Theoretically there shouldn't be loss, imagine it would be executable binaries and not music that digital copied would have loss. Those binaries would be borked and you couldn't run them anymore. But as Lev already explained _you never know what brilliant idea they implement to a consumer device_, e.g. at lest resampling is needed if there are different sample rates. Even if it is done correctly, to lower the sample rate is audible, but if you simply use the signal from _good_ analog IOs and you connect it to a good consumer HiFi amp (you don't need high end or professional studio gear) than the sound quality will be much better, than 44.1 KHz are able to provide. Note that regarding to matching filters most devices perform best at 48 KHz, even if they should provide higher sample rates. Regarding to sound quality professional studios use 48 KHz only, because higher sample rates even with matching filters aren't needed for the human ear. Professionals use higher sample rates, if they need lower latency on stage. To choose 48 KHz as a default is a good choice. It's also better to produce using 48 KHz and to resample to 44.1 KHz later, than to produce with 44.1 KHZ. The 44.1KHz were a compromise, when they invented the CD, that's not needed nowadays. Sample rates higher than 48KHz only make sense regarding to latency, not regarding to audio quality. It's likely that even very expensive gear will perform less good regarding to sound quality at higher sample rates, caused by filters that match to 48 KHz. I own a professional audio card, with real (not just faked) better specifications, than my HiFi gear has got, but the HiFi gear anyway does sound better. I don't know the reason, but I suspect it's jitter, since it's very likely that even while the professional card has mechanism to reduce jitter, the chip set/PCIe slot does cause too much jitter. So to get good audio quality by a computer, does mean that you have to buy a professional audio card and to buy 10 mobos to test on what mobo the card can be used without quality issues. Likely that you need to buy 11 or even 30 mobos ;) before you have good luck. For home recording you should forget FreeBSD and use Linux instead. For professional recording it depends on several things, if using Linux is ok, or if it would be better to use Windows or MacOS as the platform. Music production isn't a domain of FreeBSD, but I heard of Linux musicians using BSD software on Linux.
