"Add back depend on libiconv. This is needed because our base iconv doesn't
do utf-8 -> wchar_t apparently. [2] wchar_t is used by glibmm."
So it was clearly deliberate. I am a bit surprised as I have had no issues
with glib20 and no iconv. I also have glibmm and no iconv. But I use
en.US.UTF-8, so I may not hit the relevant code path. But I was certainly
able to build both without having iconv installed from ports.

You are not running WITH_NEW_XORG (no make.conf), so you are running a much
older version of glib than I am. This may be related to the issues you are
seeing. /usr/local/lib/dri files come from graphics/dri. swrast is the
software rasterization "dri" which implies that you don't have any hardware
rasterization capability.
What graphics hardware is this running on? Run "pciconf -lv" and find the
item(s) in "class = DISPLAY". Can you look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see
what driver is actually being used? I suspect you may need either the
nvidia driver or NEW_XORG, but I am not at all sure.

I solved this with an install of dri.
However,as you can see from my recent "Gtk20 port?" thread on
comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc my problems run deeper and replacing
the whole ports tree via svn hasn't solved them.

Where would this be configured?
I previously had the regular xorg fail to install so installed
xorg-minimal.

glib-2.36.3_2 is the version now in place.

As of now the onboard graphics controller of the i7-3770K CPU
is outputting to an HP Compaq LA2405x monitor.I did purchase an
ASUS Radeon HD 7770 graphics card but it's currently uninstalled
as the first OS I had was FreeBSD 9.2/i386 (subscription CDs turn
out to be only i386 which became an issue when I got this 64-bit CPU)
which didn't support it and 10.0/amd64 has only been installed since.
(I never had great graphical ambitions for this machine,and was
upgrading from a Pentium 4 with ITS onboard graphics).

What I see in there now mentions built-in defaults (I did no active
configuring,waiting on getting the card (and full xorg) installed).
My logs from before the latest hal crash (rendering fvwm useless as
it won't see input...and hal won't reinstall) have been overwritten.

The issue was showcased by graphics/rawtherapee (crash on launch). And a
chat with one of the glib developers also showed some subtle issues
regarding base iconv UTF-8 handling. All of this locale stuff is over my
head though.

I have not had any problems either with glib20 nor glibmm without libiconv
installed.
It would make sense that problems only show up when using double wide
encodings.
Perhaps whether to use base iconv or converters/libiconv should have a
configuration option.
Converting my whole system back to libiconv is no small task.

ATM, the only ports I am aware of that require the port that triggers this
issue is rawtharapee. If you can live without it, there appears no issue
with not installing the port. Just edit the glib20/Makefile to remove the "
iconv:wchar_t" from the USES. I'm not sure of the potential issues, but an
option to use libiconv for rawtherapee seems like a reasonable idea.

Dear FreeBSD port maintainer:
As part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of problems in
the FreeBSD ports system, we periodically notify users of ports
that are marked as "broken" in their Makefiles. In many cases
these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD
build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions
of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions.
The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386
architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more
of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as
size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth.
In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different
errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the
build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to
help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide.
One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen
on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this
algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at
this kind of thing.)
The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem
exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the
latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we
mean 'combination of 7.x/8.x/9.x/-current with target architecture'.)
(Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not
the error still applies to the latest version. The program
that generates this report is not yet able to determine this
automatically.)
portname: x11/gnome-shell

If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please
accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if
you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply
with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts
in the past.
Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports
really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to
the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate
false matches. If one of these errors fits that description,
please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark

problem in the future.
Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD.

Dear textproc/libxml2 Maintainer,
While tracking down a docbook issue, I noticed some rather suspicious
looking code in xmlIO.c in the libxml2 port.
I was looking at the code associated with XML_IO_NETWORK_ATTEMPT, which is
reported from a single case in the function
xmlNoNetExternalEntityLoader(), down around line 4105 of this file (very
near the end).
In the test for this error, it appears that there is a mishandling of
strcmp(), as the test goes like this:
4104 if (resource !=3D NULL) {
4105 if (((!xmlStrncasecmp(BAD_CAST resource, BAD_CAST
"ftp://", 6)) ||
4106 (!xmlStrncasecmp(BAD_CAST resource, BAD_CAST
"http://", 7)))) {
4107 xmlIOErr(XML_IO_NETWORK_ATTEMPT, (const char *)
resource);
4108 if (resource !=3D (xmlChar *) URL)
4109 xmlFree(resource);
4110 return(NULL);
4111 }
4112 }
The call xmlStrncasecmp() is defined for debugging purposes in nanohttp.c
using a macro passing the arguments to strncasecmp(), so I am assuming
that the behaviour if xmlStrncasecmp() is consistent with the strcmp()
family, notably that a return value of zero/false means equality, and
non-zero/true means non-equality (likely with the usual behaviour based on
lexical ordering for values greater/less than zero).
This means that the expression ( ! xmlStrncasecmp(BAD_CAST resource,
BAD_CAST "ftp://", 6) evaluates to true when given a string with a lead
value of =B3ftp://=B3 is found, and the second clause to the =B3or=B2 state=
ment
similarly tests for equality for =B3http://=B3.
The if itself then translates to:
if ( url-begins-ftp OR url-begins-http ) then ERROR
which seems to be quite different from what I would expect the logic to be.
As I have never done work on libxml2, I don=B9t have any easy way to run an=
y
test cases or validation, so rather than submit a patch directly, I
thought I would email you first.
Do you want me to submit a bug report for this?
Thanks,
Andrew.

Dear devel/dconf Maintainer,
I have just noticed that there is a build issue in devel/dconf.
If the libxml2 library is not installed prior to attempting to build dconf
(on 10.0), then the build fails. Building and installing libxml2 fixes
the issue, and dconf then builds successfully.
I noticed this while tracking down a different error with respect to
docbook, which is how I ended up in the situation of attempting to compile
dconf without the libxml2 library having been brought in through any other
dependency.
Do you want me to file a bug report for this?
Thanks,
Andrew.

Dear port maintainer,
The portscout new distfile checker has detected that one or more of your
ports appears to be out of date. Please take the opportunity to check
each of the ports listed below, and if possible and appropriate,
submit/commit an update. If any ports have already been updated, you can
safely ignore the entry.
You will not be e-mailed again for any of the port/version combinations
below.
Full details can be found at the following URL:
http://portscout.freebsd.org/gnome@freebsd.org.html
Port | Current version | New version
------------------------------------------------+-----------------+------------
x11/gdm | 2.30.7 | 3.11.90
------------------------------------------------+-----------------+------------
If any of the above results are invalid, please check the following page
for details on how to improve portscout's detection and selection of
distfiles on a per-port basis:
