With or about the time of the ICU update, there was apparently a change in name-mangling for one symbol related to libgthread. This seemed to cause all manner of mysterious failures. Though the chmod is still needed for the binary. Not only in case of the 5-BETA2 port but also in case of the standard port or the binary package as well. I'll doublecheck my environments though.
